TAMW one realizes the screams are not for her.
TAMW 20 minutes later, the screams of "MERMAID! MERMAID!" begins again, this time right on the pool side next to one's lane.
TAMW one hears the mother of screamer asking the question, "Which mermaid do you like best?" The screamer replies, "This one cos she's real cos she has fins and everything!"

TAMW while doing a photoshoot on a beach as an evil/dark mermaid a little girl comes running up to you shouting "you're the prettiest mermaid princess I've ever seen" and you smile but you're thinking "wait no you should be scared of me I mean look at me and my claws!" I was pretty intimidating looking but apparently she didn't think so haha!
You could always scare them away with a villain song with lyrics like:
That 'perfect girl' is gone!
Here I stand in the light of day;
Let the storm rage on!
The cold never bothered me anyway!
Hmmm....Between that and Maleficent, it appears the lines betwixt light and dark have become a bit blurred.... :mermaid kiss: :cthulhu:

Fun123joker that is pretty cool do you think you all could form your own little pod? I wish my friends would become interested in being mermaids or mermen!
That awkward moment when you are home alone and you just finished watching all of the episodes of Mako Mermaids that are on Netflix and you want to go swimming in your tail SOO BADLY so you get your monofin and put it on and after a few minutes you get a phone call and you have to quickly scoot all the way over to your phone to answer it! :p
I have been wanting to swim so very badly...My boyfriend and I are planning a party out on the bay this week and I am going to bring my second tail and swim in it there for the first time. None of the people we are inviting know that I am a mermaid but I want to swim so badly that I don't care. That will probably give me another awkward moment story.

TAMW you hold up the line at the bank because the teller (not the one I was actually at mind you) is very interested in how you're silicone tail is coming along ever since that charge popped up on my credit card. Yeah, we talked for ten minutes on the tail alone. Doing nothing that I went in for. Just cause he wanted an update. On my tail. The lady waiting in line behind me was getting very annoyed. As was the teller who was waiting to help me.

And you stare at her with both eyes half open and say, "Yeahh:$...So uhm what did you come in here to ask me?"

Ugh so frustrating >_< These girls have absolutely no idea! My fear is that they'll buy tails and make it some big popular girl thing -_-
Honestly, I haven't told anyone about my mermaiding dreams because I'm terrified of this happening. I feel so selfish, but I know I can't control it if it does become a trend at my school. I just don't want so seem like someone that follows trends, you know? * so glad someone else feels like this*

Yup^^^ I'm not even going to tell my parents about wanting to do it professionally until I'm out of school, because my mum works in a primary school (would start trend on purpose) and kinda *mocks* my interests, (by making them seem less serious and making fun of them) and also, I can't get a silicone tail that I'd like to use professionally until I've finished growing. Soooo... I'm just hanging out for the time I turn 20ish :/

Be careful telling people in general. I lost a teaching job because they found out I was mermaiding professionally. Felt it didn't reflect well on the school. Legally they couldn't make me stop but I was told I would not be invited to retire the next year and, since I wasn't tenured yet, they had every right to do that, for whatever reason they wanted.

I know that feeling, it's like having a love for mermaids is a trend or something now. But oh well! If they're just doing it because of the trend then they will slowly show less interest as it goes "out of style"
Same thing happened with vampires. Fad is over now, and it's starting with zombies as well. It will fade out too.
That leaves the stuff for the rest of us that really enjoy it.

I think I've been quite blessed with the situation I was given though. Now that I work for the Disney store everyone thinks my mermaiding is pretty awesome and they've all dubbed me the resident mermaid. Granted they all love Disney and cosplay as well so...
My friends outside of work all support me as well :)

That awkward moment you have to research memory for an art class, and when reading about memory you see the word hippocampus for an organ in the brain that helps sort memories, and you just know that word sounds familiar so you google it and find out that the hippocampus was named after its resemblance to a seahorse. So then you picture a seahorse in your brain. Then you still know there is something else called a hippocampus and remember that there is a mythical half horse half fish creature called a hippocampus and so just about the only thing you remember from your 3 or so hours of research is that the hippocampus in your brain looks like a seahorse and that you did a drawing of the mythical creature hippocampus on your research page.
But seriously we all have a hippocampus in our brain and it is shaped like a seahorse! Here is a link to a comparison I found of the brain's hippocampus next to a photo of a seahorse: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hippocampus_and_seahorse.JPG

Darnit Alea, I'm a rocket scientist (long story), not a brain surgeon! Still, I can offer another intriguing tidbit off the top of my head (no pun intended) and some advice....
At the very core of the brain (at the top of the brainstem) dwells the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis. This is a primordial component that controls such things as fear and (apparently) sense of identity. In 100% of studied cases, transgender people have the same neurons in this region as the gender with which they identify (as opposed to that which they outwardly appear to be).
You're on the right track with the hippocampus, as it controls spacial memory. For an artistic interpretation, I'm imagining something like a dolphin's sonar; a sort of topographical map extending outward from recent memories immediately around you to distant memories deep in undersea trenches (buried in your subconscious). Those memories which come most easily to your mind and/or were most important in your life are those which your "sonar" bounces back to you in shimmering silver.
I hope that helps! Good luck on your project; you are in my prayer! :cheerleader: :mermaid kiss: :pearl:

Thank you Michelle! Well unfortunately I was busy doing lots of work today and then I went to do some of my online class work only to find a 'hidden assignment' that the teacher gave us. I thought I was done for the weekly assignment. :( I will probably be ranting about that in another topic on here, but anyways I wanted to do some concept sketches and I really love your idea and I will probably incorporate that into something. I definitely love the sonar idea. I had been thinking of a layering effect of clear images stacked, but darned if my teacher didn't say that idea last class so then I felt like I shouldn't do my idea because it ended up being an idea he had already done! I don't know maybe I can personalize it in my own way. Anyways thanks so much!

You have really long hair, like past your arse, and you get tired of it, so you get a beanie big enough to hold it all, and put your hair up in it. Only to go grocery shopping and people either say 1 of 2 things;
"Do you have cancer? "
(because it looks like i dont have any hair)
OR
"You look like Harry Styles!!!"

That Awkard moment when you are trying to practice your breath holding but you don't know how to practice Breath holding. So instead you just swim to the bottom of a crowded 10foot pool. You realize you need oxygen to live. Begin to swim up to surface, when panic strikes because you realize that there are 2 VERY large women treading water directly above you! :eyepop::eyepop::eyepop: AND YOU PRAY TO GOD THAT YOU DON'T ACCIDENTALLY SWIM INTO THEIR ASSES!
The good news is that even when it seems like you have no air and you start gagging in your throat, the truth is that you still have air. That gagging reflex is something you have to get used to when breath holding. Just be glad it was a 10 foot pool and not deep enough that you forgot to equalize your ears when shooting up and ended up with a killer headache!!!! (Been there, done that...)

MermaidMichelle

I think the first two problems are interrelated; your dolphin kick will improve once you are more relaxed and your muscles have loosened up as a result. I haven't had much experience mermaiding in front of people, but I imagine that focusing on your own thoughts will help.
Also, am I the only one who read "dark water" and immediately thought The Pirates of Dark Water? Or am I just Ancient? And on that subject....
Tiamat? Really? How fantastic! The first published campaign for the new D&D system uses your name for the Queen of Dragons being summoned by cultists! Seems appropriate for a fire-angel sea dragon. ;)
More than you may realize. *Freediving deep breath*
Tiamat has been the five-headed Queen/Mother of Dragons since the beginning of Dungeons & Dragons. If you look up the 1980s cartoon show of the same name, you shall find her as one of the major supporting/world-shaking characters, and it was this same character (show or not) which inspired every video game dragon to share her name. Ironic, as D&D creator Gary Gygax inserted her as a negative commentary on 2nd-wave Feminism (as found in his book World of Greyhawk, circa 1976).
I now pause to comment upon how cool it is to have another woman who plays/played D&D, and to give the warning that as much as I didn't want to believe it for the vast majority of my life, there are spiritual issues (even Satanic elements!) to the game.
Tiamat is actually the name of the Sumerian/Babylonian goddess who created mythological dragons and mermaids millennia ago, but I prefer the Hebrew version of my name, which refers to the Deep that was the universe before the Breath of God came upon it in Genesis 1:2. To combine it with my second name (Michelle), it means essentially "Without God I am nothing; for who is like God?"

TAMW you are swimming happily in your tail and a lovely little girl wants to be friends and chat up for a bit. She starts with the usual stuff (are you real, do you know Ariel...), and then all of a sudden she asks if there are witches in the sea. "I have never seen one", you answer, and then she proceeds to tell you to be very careful, just in case, so they may not catch you. Also, do you know that under the floor there is a giant firepit and a demon? Yes, the floor is there so we cannot see them, and you know who put the floor there? It was god, because god has made everything. And do you know what a church is? It's where god is, and his mother too. They are there in pictures and songs. And I know a song, but it is in another language.
And you, the atheist mermaid, don't know what to do. I just kept looking at her with a surprised face saying "Really?" and "Oh, wow!".

I thought Roman Catholic as well, especially because distinguishing between God the father and Jesus can get confusing to little ones. Like trying to figure out what a second cousin is.
I remember reading somewhere, maybe Gnostic texts (?), that the Holy Spirit was female, but was phased out as Christianity moved more towards patriarchy...use the BVM and female Holy Ghost to convert the goddess worshipping Pagans, but shut that down once you got them baptised.
I want a pegacorn!

^^
The "Virgin" was only included because folks wouldn't stop worshipping female deities, aka the Earth Mother/Gaia.
(as it's pretty hard for a sole male entity to bring forth new life, ya know. :p )
Thus, they scoured the texts for a suitable christian female, Mary was the obvious choice and from then on, if people worshipped the "Mother", they could put a christian overlay on it.
(Like with Yule and Midsummer etc rites- if you can't beat them, just say it's our custom all along).
That said; something much more important:

That Awkward Moment When the thread turns to religion, and as much as one would be otherwise willing to keep silent on a non-religious forum such as this, one feels the need to clear up misconceptions....
Pearlie and Echidna, I believed much the same thing for a long time, and you are quite right about the necessity of a female component in a religion with a Creation God (though arguably Islam manages to get around that). The oldest recorded creation story actually has the partriarch deity violently resting this power through the slaying of my namesake, and I go into this sort of thing more in Why GOD Doesn't Hate You.
While doing the research for said book (and it required quite a lot) I at last learned the truth regarding the Female God; it isn't the Holy Spirit (that was always referred to in the masculine) but rather...Jesus. Yes, that's right....
Have you heard about Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, who referred to Himself as Female in multiple Canonical Gospels?
You see, Creation was spoken into existence by the Word of God, the Logos, also referred to as Sophia (Wisdom) and ALWAYS referred to in the feminine. Protestants will find Her in Proverbs, and Catholics will also find Her in Sirach (which is otherwise the most sexist book in the Bible and whose sexism Jesus openly defied) and in Her own book, Wisdom (which predicts the Passion ~90 years before Christ).
The Word of God took the human form of Jesus Christ, but (as Jesus noted) in Her natural state, She is most assuredly female. After all, God is referred to as having a womb and having birth pains (in the Book of Job and in Jesus' prediction of the end), so it only stands to reason that God is really as much female as "He" is male!

That awkward moment when you're dying to ask him on a date to get to know him but you can't because you already have a boyfriend...
That awkward moment when you're finally saying something to him and it's only to give him the newspaper you finished to read...
That awkward moment when it's about time to get off the subway, you stand up and step on his foot...
Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

That awkward moment you go swimming at a spring and you decide to surprise divers by swimming down to them and the divers never turn to look at you they just keep facing & swimming forward and never turn their heads. I guess they were too serious for mermaid fun. :p

That awkward moment when youre helping a guest at the disneystore with their towel purchases and they tell you they're going to halifax and you immediately think theyre gonna go swimming with Mermaid Raina so you ask them and theyre like "THERE ARE MERMAIDS IN HALIFAX?" and you shamelessly insert info about the Halifax mermaids and where to find them.
then as they leave you hear the dad going "GUYS THERE'S MERMAIDS IN HALIFAX!!!"

Arion, I am very proud of your monogamous fidelity. As a transwoman Roman Catholic training to become a nun, I am constantly looking for ways to validate the LGBT community, and I have all-too-often encountered the attitude (usually outside the Church, intriguingly enough) that gays are incapable of such permanent devotion...but you have displayed it in the face of a porn star! :cheerleader:

I finally have something to contribute!
So I'm sitting on the side of the pool waiting for my friend to join me. I don't have my glasses on so I wasn't paying much attention. This guy kept walking toward me and then scurrying away. Finally he says, "nice tail!" And I, being a dork, say," huh? Me? Oh thanks!" Because, Derp, I was the only mer in the pool. >.<
He then asked how I swam in it. Awkward mer is awkward.

That awkward moment during a show when a stingray decides to give you a hug in the face lol
I'm working towards mermaiding, so I haven't had any awkward moments. I've just been watching a lot of YouTube videos to imagine and keep myself going in the right direction to getting healthy. On one such video, I saw just this happen. The mermaid kissed the bottom of the silly sting ray. I thought it was really adorable! The sting ray is helping you put on a great show. You're audience will eat it up. No worries! ;)

TAMW you find yourself mesmerized by the full moon.
that awkward moment when... 23474
Haha! *nervous laugh; slinks stealthily away when no one's watching*
That awkward moment when you take off your tail after swimming for 2 hours, and realise you have almost forgotten how to walk. Gah, shaky legs.
Haha! I had wondered a few days ago, when I started reading through this, if this ever happened to mers. You're used to flipping through the water as though you have one leg, not two. Get out of the water and you grow two pair and can't figure out how to use them. Seems pretty sensical to me. :)
It's also got me thinking what coming to land for a "real" mermaid must be like. They've never walked, always had legs. The density of gravity is much different in the water then on land, so standing would be difficult. You know, when humans get out of the water and they feel weighed down by the water? How much worse would it be for someone who's never been on dry land? Also, their core temp must be far different then humans because of the coldness of the water. They'd feel fried in 70 degree weather! The more I think about it, the more I wonder at how a mermaid would survive on land. :P This sort of thinking helps me imagine how I want to represent the mer world in my stories.
TAMW you realise how much of a mer addict you've become when you ignore household chores in favor of watching the Aquamarine DVD you found in the bargain bin, even after you read all the bad reviews about it!
Yeah. I don't get that one either. Why were people SO against Aquamarine? When I saw the advertisement, I was determined to watch it, despite disgruntled reviews. I've never been able to get enough of the mer-world, always fascinated by it, never able to be a part of it. (Until recently, when I discovered how real mermaids are.) I wasn't disappointed that I recall. (Life has happened since. It's been a while since I've been able to watch it.) I'd have jumped for the steal of a deal too!
- Thirty-something is where I'm at right now, and to be as succinct as possible I would say that we would be a lot happier if we weren't constantly bombarded with a media that assured us that we are well past our prime.
Yes, Michelle! My husband and I are 32 and 33 respectively. (I'm the younger of the two of us.) Yesterday, I was talking about how we are "past our prime" when it occurred to me that we are actually still very young. I don't know if it has any thing to do with how judgmental of age this society seems to be or because of some serious trauma we've been through over the past half-decade. But we really are NOT that old! When you think about it, people are living longer and longer these days. There are many who have made it to a whole century. And even they are young compared to the age of the earth itself.
TAMW you realize you went from seriously hydrophobic (I would have nothing to do with the water until I was nearly 10.) To "I wanna be a mermaid!" in only four years. Funny how things work out sometimes isn't it?
That's a very good thing! One way of facing your fears is associating it with something positive. I'm not hydrophobic that I know of. I nearly drowned once and don't like water up my nose any more (that didn't even bother me before that incident), but I have always longed for the water and to swim more. I was 12 before I FINALLY learned how to swim. So if you're concerned how old you were when you finally did, you don't need to be. You're not alone. And I was older. ;)
That awkward moment you decide to tell one of your friends about your new interest in being a mermaid and you show her a photo of you wearing a mermaid tail and she keeps laughing about everything mermaid related you tell her and you are not sure if she is laughing at you because your idea is weird and she thinks it is strange or if she thinks it is cool. :thinks:
My Dr was doing that yesterday. I went in because I was ill, but also to ask for whatever advice she could give about my general health and what concerns I may have as a free diver. She was pretty determined to find out why I wanted to free dive. Finally, I told her I want to be a mermaid. She laughed and I pointed it out. She said only partly, but she thinks it's cool. Maybe because it involves great incentive to lose a great deal of weight that I seriously need to lose. Anyway, I told her mers are doing awesome things, like Make A Wish. (Impressed by Mermaid Linden's work.)
About the hydraulophone: Wow! If I were a professional mermaid, I'd want to take this with me to shows. I would tell the kids it was an instrument from my world and give them a chance to play on it themselves if possible.
