Yeah. I don't get that one either. Why were people SO against Aquamarine? When I saw the advertisement, I was determined to watch it, despite disgruntled reviews. I've never been able to get enough of the mer-world, always fascinated by it, never able to be a part of it. (Until recently, when I discovered how real mermaids are.) I wasn't disappointed that I recall. (Life has happened since. It's been a while since I've been able to watch it.) I'd have jumped for the steal of a deal too!

I feel the same way about my Date With An Angel DVD; it was a legendary flop, but I really like it for some reason....I wonder what that says about me...lol :thinks:

Yes, Michelle! My husband and I are 32 and 33 respectively. (I'm the younger of the two of us.) Yesterday, I was talking about how we are "past our prime" when it occurred to me that we are actually still very young. I don't know if it has any thing to do with how judgmental of age this society seems to be or because of some serious trauma we've been through over the past half-decade. But we really are NOT that old! When you think about it, people are living longer and longer these days. There are many who have made it to a whole century. And even they are young compared to the age of the earth itself.

I was only 16 and just starting to delve deep into anime thanks to the inspiration of Sailor Moon, thus I searched a relatively-local video store for any other anime I might enjoy. Spotting Rumiko Takahashi's Mermaid Forest, I thought to myself, Cool! A mermaid-anime done in the style of Ranma 1/2! Maybe the mermaids will be as beautiful as those in (one of my favourite new video games) Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen! One quick examination of the blurb on the back of the box revealed that the Japanese have an unpleasant legend that eating the flesh of the ningyo (mermaid!) makes humans immortal! :jawdrop: :crazy:

Nah I don't think you are extra gross. A month ago I was a camp counselor and it was so hot outside that just sitting outside you would be drenched in your own sweat. Aww Kalani next time you shouldn't be afraid to say you are a mermaid. I find that it normally starts a fun discussion on just what mermaiding is and how one goes about swimming in a tail.

That awkward moment when a guy you haven't seen in a long time shows up to church with his friend and they keep talking about how they have been surfing over the summer and how after church they are going to go night surfing at the beach. After hearing them talk about surfing, you decide to say, "I'm not a surfer, but I am a mermaid." Then the guy you don't know laughs and thought it was a joke. Then you decide not to bother explaining that you are serious.

I wasn't going to go night surfing because I don't really go into the sea at dawn or dusk. They are going surfing again tomorrow but during mid-day. They invited my boyfriend and me to come too, but my boyfriend will probably be working so I am considering going without him. I really want to learn how to surf although the waves here aren't impressive. I guess that is a good thing for a beginner though.

He also got a familiar feeling. Turns out he was a booty call from 2-3 years ago! We both have been Facebook friends since more than a year and we completely forgot about it. We both thought the coincidence was actually hilarious. It is a small world lol.

I got one chance to swim in the pool before they closed for cleaning season (1 week). Ahh! Starting today, though, I'm swimming nearly, if not every, day to become a stronger swimmer and mermaid. *squeal of delight* I had a lot of fun today and I worked hard!

TAMW you're trying to describe to a lifeguard your goals in the water, without actually saying the "m" word.

TAMW you give in and just tell her what you're working towards and how hard you're really working to make your mermaid dreams come true.

TAMW you find yourself babbling, trying to explain how real mermaids actually are.

TAMW she not only agrees with you, but seems even more excited then you. (Do I sense another fish in the lake?)

I'm glad I told her because she told me about fins (non mono) that the gym has that I can use until I get my first fin. She stayed with me (from the deck) during the first few laps, coaching me. Didn't expect that. It was kind of her. She complimented me on what a natural I am in the water. Wow! I'm headed towards the right sport all right! :D It excited me so much that I decided that I'm going to get my first fin (NOT tail, just the fin) for Christmas IF I can lose a total of 60 pounds by then. (20 down, 40 to go. If I keep on track, that should be VERY easy!) WOW! Is it just me or does swimming like that give you even MORE energy? But maybe I was just really happy and excited to be swimming in fins for the first time in my entire life!

TAMW you feel like a frog walking in the fins on the deck to the shallow end and say so. Then, while you're practicing with them, you start doing the frog kick and singing "A Froggy Went A Courtin"! I swear that's gonna have me laughing for a long time to come! Great memories were made today. TAMW when the pool grows quiet and you feel eyeballs on the back of your head. (The lifeguard was talking to someone else at that point.) I was just being silly, enjoying my new discovery, minding my own, but I got to pay back the kindness of the lifeguard with a bit of humor. Made my day all around!

Not sure if this qualifies as awkward or awesome, but I had two moments this week both involving big manly men turning into 3 year old girls upon seeing tails:

1: At UPS shipping Mermanda's tail when a big tattooed dudebro sees the tail and loses his mind. Says the coolest thing he's ever seen, he asks so shyly if he can touch it, etc etc. He's half considering getting one now.

2: My house has super old wiring, and last night one of the "legs" decided to give out completely (while I was painting a tail, too!), knocking out power to half my house. So the guys from the power company had to come out and rig a fix for me. I couldn't close the garage door, so the tail was just hanging out for all to see. These two big burly bearded dudes from the power company were just shy of squealing like school girls when they saw it. ^^ happened to me too and it just forced me to become a little more creative in my selections and colors and actually led to something way more awesome than my original "dream tail". I feel certain something similar will happen as you develop your new design...plus yeah, the more new tails and tailmaker innovations you see the more your tastes and desires for what your perfect tail consists of will evolve.

You are never too old to realize your dream. An old granny on Patch Adams (movie inspired by true life) swam in sketti. Another guy wanted to go on Safari and Patch brought in balloon animals and darts. And there are so many more stories out there, I'm sure. It's a pet peeve of mine when older folks say, "I'm too old to..." or "you're too young to..." They are selling themselves and/or others short. It's so sad!

Yeah it might come down to me needing everyone's opinion, but really I have forever to decide anyways. I need much more experience before getting my absolute dream tail. I have tried taking the best from each as well, but I still have trouble picking a fave. I know I want it based around the looks of an Indo-Chinese green peacock, but other than that I am all over the place with different ideas.

You know I noticed some mers make a mood board for tail inspiration. Maybe I should try that.

I've pretty much decided I'm going to get a monofin first, for Christmas. I'll make my first tail next year with whatever nice material I can find. If/when I decide to get a silicone tail, I'll worry about the design then. Right now, at my place in life, I can't afford one anyway. Trying to develop a career around fitness and nutrition. The thing is, I know how to use them, so I don't need them explained by anyone male or female. It's a bit insulting when they assume you don't know.

We recently re-joined the local YMCA (yes, their relatively tiny pool made me chuckle... the GAC (http://www.greensboroaquaticcenter.com) has spoiled me completely). When my wife was showing me one of the stations where you hold yourself up by your arms and lift your legs out in front of you, she was flabbergasted that I was able to lift my legs out for as long as I did. When she questioned me, I just made swimming motions in the air. ;)

This reminds me of an awkward mermaid moment of mine (January 26th of 2014):

TAM when one is trying out their first homemade monofin and it is also the first time one has swum since retiring from their (9-year) lifeguarding career 8 years earlier and it is the first time one has swum since starting hormone replacement therapy...and one discovers that one no longer possesses the upper-body strength necessary to lift oneself out of the pool!

I solved the problem by simply delivering a kick while still in my monofin; the force of the fin pushed me right out!

I've heard about women being interested in that and it's my first time meeting some.

So let me tell you about the awkwardness that went down during visiting hours last night:

SO... I had my paper ready and my friend and I headed to the guys dorms, and we were locked out of the building due to not being a resident of that hall, luckily an RA came by and noticed us. We told her we were visiting friends, so she let us in. Then we were locked out of the actual hall it was located in, I looked through the window of the door and of course the first dorm on the right is the one with my photo hung on it. My friend, who lived in the area and was supposed to let us in, wasn't replying to my text messages. We sat outside the door for a good 10 to 15 minutes when this guy comes from around us to go into the hall... IT WAS THE GUY WHO HAD MY PHOTO ON HIS DOOR. I had my head down because I was looking at my phone, so he held the door open for me and my friend because he thought we were visiting a friend and didn't realize it was me.. he started going in his room and this is basically the conversation that went down:
Me: So... you're not supposed to be here right now because I was going to add something to your already amazing door.
Him: *looks at me confused, then all of a sudden you see the horror and embarrassment hit his face when he realizes who I am, he also wasn't aware I knew of the photo on his door til now*
Me: Hi I'm savannah, the mermaid *shakes hands with him*
Him: ... oh my god...(by now his face is bright red, he won't make eye contact with me, and he's laughing from being so embarassed)

So I add the paper to his door underneath the one of me and #datethemermaid and one of the people who lives in the hall walks by
Him:Is that the...? Ooohhh

Then several doors open and heads are peaking out as I'm talking to the guy who is still beet red from embarrassment. I left after that and it was by far the funniest thing ever..

Today at the pool...
TAMW two young girls aged about 6 and 7, see one swimming about near the boom, and quickly get their flippers on and try to catch up.
TAMW one escapes so easily and lols at them under her breath, "Haha! You can't even swim! HAHAHAHAAHA!"
TAMW they finally catch up, I swim away and under them, pass two lanes and surface at the third, "HAHAHAHAHAHA!"

TAMW one is away from the boards for a few days and misses thread-winning hilarity from Mermaid Sirenia...but at least now he really does know her! :mermaid kiss:

Now for the dark, Hallowe'en part (this happened this morning):

TAMW one has a dream in which an unknown mermaid is swimming about the pool in a beautiful shiny green-bronze tail with blue-patinaed pectoral fins while one is trying to teach little children to swim because for some reason it was October of 1998 and I was 19 again!

TAMW it reminds one of one's own in-the-works mermaid outfit and brings to mind the theme from Yukito Kishiro's Battle Angel, for said song is inexplicably titled Cyborg Mermaid....

(Cybersurgeon General's Warning: The following song is nigh-devastatingly depressing when heard with the translated (some of which by myself) lyrics below (Kishiro himself had a bit of a nervous breakdown working on the manga, which caused him to take a 'sabbatical' working on a whimsical fantasy tale about a female sailor transporting a dragon's egg). I at least found it such as I first heard it about a year after having the Near-Death Experience which inspired my own tail design....)

You know, this holiday was originally known as All Hallow's Eve, as it came the day before the celebration of all the souls who have been taken to Purgatory or Heaven. Thus it is quite appropriate to dress as a Saint, and given the above I think I know with which particular "Battle Angel" to go (SeaGlass Siren was right)....

I carry a 1 liter nalgene bottle with me everywhere. I drink one before lunch, refill it, drink 1 before the end of the work day, refill it again, and 1 before I go to bed. I have to pee a lot, but it forces me to get up and move at least every hour so I'm not sedentary all day. Sometimes I'll throw some frozen fruit or sliced cucumber in the bottle if I want it flavored. It's helped me get from a dehydrated mess to a fully hydrated desert dwelling mermaid. :P
