That moment when you send a pic of a tail design to the wrong friend and she replies that she wants a tail that's aqua! And neither of you knew the other likes merfolk! Oh my gosh! That's awesome! What a coincidence!

As for me... how about that awkward moment when you are casually walking through the store, talking about your "tail" to you mom... and then you realize that everyone in isle 3 probably thinks you're insane!

TAMW you spend around 30 minutes with your friend whining, about pools, because walking in you saw a "No Mermaid Tails" sign. We both agreed that just because some people are stupid and don't understand the hazard of leaving your kid alone with their legs stuck together, doesn't mean they should ruin it for the rest of us. Honestly? Why can't people just take a little while, and make sure their kid CAN swim in a tail, before sending them out to play in the deep end ALONE. (Ugh see here I go ranting again! XD )

I'm goofing off in the pool with my boyfriend, and he flips me upside down in the water while we are rough housing--and I dont expect it and get a sinus full of pool water and surface like a whale exhaling XD He felt so bad and said he thought I would just block the water since I'm a mermaid and all.

That awkward moment when I'm calmly doing my job at a hotel in Orlando, when the subject of Boynton Beach comes up in discussion with a guest. I mentioned that I was there last year for the Pirate and Mermaid festival last year, and her 7-year-old daughter lost her sh*t over her excitement that there were real mermaids in their city.

They were in supreme disbelief, so I had to show them a picture of me in tail.

Her daughter seemed to die of excitement, and said that she doesn't need to see the mermaids anymore, because she just met one in person. I feel special now. :)

Update: The family came back, brought the father and grandmother, and the little girl introduced me as the real mermaid to the rest of the family, and begged me to show them the picture I showed her. They all know my (actual) name very well now. The grandmother told me that she is a mermaid in her dreams.

Oh, and they all bought tickets from me, giving me roughly $20 in commission.

I'm sure quite a few of you remember the guy I go to college with who had a photo of me on his door with #datethemermaid right? (if not see previous posts on this thread)

WELL. On Valentine's weekend I get a text from him saying
"Hey I just really wanted to let you know how much I appreciated your crush-gram you put on my door on Valentine's day! Sorry I wasn't there to personally receive it, but it was totally unexpected and really awesome"

... I didn't send a crush-gram.. Some idiot in his dorm pretended to give him one from me as a way to make fun of him..

(Side note: She is three-and-a-half and can't really swim yet, although she already begged for a dive-ring at the swiming pool's shop ("what on earth does she want a dive ring for? She can't even swim and just fools around in the children's section. Well, if it makes her happy...") and started picking it up out of waist- to chest-deep water, using daddy's hand to pull herself down, but that's another story...).

P.S.: We really, really didn't urge her to do it, she honestly came up with that idea all by herself! Came quite as a shock when she tried it the first time, I can tell you. But she likes it and has so much fun. :p

Ever since my niece has seen me swim in a tail, she's wanted a tail of her own for a while. So this year, for her birthday present I got her a SwimFin and told her it was a Mermaid Fin! She loves it!

Not exactly mermaid related but sort of. I was working at the aquarium, next to the stingrays to answer any questions people had. This little girl comes up to me, pulls on my sleeve and asks me, "so where do you keep the mermaids?" I sort of sputtered a bit, then made a story up about having a rescue mermaid in the big tank, but that she was very shy and she'd have to look reeeeaaaally hard, and that she'd have to come tell me if she found her.

So, as a trial, I did a "marketing target group research", I "tested" a few relatives kids (girls and boys, age between 4-7), asking about what they think about mermaids, and showing videos on youtube about 'real mermaids', and so sad but they all so skeptic :( after I had my tail ready I made appearance for a few of them in pool, but still nothing :D I guess im not enough suggestive or what -.- and since they remember me, not like Livou the mermiad, but "Livou, who believes in mermaids" XDDD Feels like im the kid and they are indulgent adults - awkward :/

Well, since it's happened at least three times lately...

That awkward moment when you decide to take your tail off once out of the pool, so you hoist yourself out only to get your fin stuck between the pool ladder's rails and make a CLANG loud enough that everyone in the pool notices. Then you have to awkwardly roll to get it out and look like you're beached, your other mermaid friend cackling behind you.

And every single time: "Hey look, it's a mermaid!"

Your driveing home from your second job and a manager from your first job texts you what’s up mermaid...then uses it as a Segway into asking for nude pics of you in the bath tub.

TAMW you put on a fabric tail for the first time in your boyfriends pool. (He working in his home office) you swim and are not graceful are going to get out. Then said boyfriend walks and goes oooooooh your so cute let me take your picture. Leading to TAMW you look at the pics and see you have more fat rolls than you thought. And are face palming when he goes oh I sent them to my parents !!!!!

Witch a few months later leads to another TAMW I look at the pic again and see the problem was my swim top had come partially up and have my boobies are comeing out of the bottom and not only being imbarased all over again and then adding to the shame going ( omg my boyfriends parents have now seen my boobs. Lol my bf is 47 and his parents are in their 60’s so hopeing they didn’t notice to much !!!

Also TAMW you show your boyfriend pic of professional mermaid in some most amazing photos and all he does is smile and shake his head and you just go for it and say I think that would be really fun it must make them so happy. And he gives you the awe your cute but are you into this and how into this are you look. Then he says what ever floats your boat and makes you happy! ( little does he know I may grab him to be my mertender)

That awkward moment when: you go mermaiding in a river that your human friends are going tubing down and the river is moving them quickly away and you are in the shallows struggling to quickly get your tail on and your monofin foot pocket curls under a bit and you are struggling to get it situated and no one sees what you are doing and you hear one person ask, "Hey, do we need to wait for her? Is she just chillin' there or what?" and my boyfriend goes, "Nah she is okay she will catch up." Which he says as their raft of tubes is going around a bend soon to be out of sight. Then you finally get your tail on and speed off down the river to catch up to your friends. You reach your tube and while huffing and puffing from the swim, haul yourself up onto the raft. Then you realize you pulled your tail up too hastily and it is on a bit sideways so you start pulling on the fabric and you feel awkward because you are disturbing the peace and tranquility with all this noise of pulling on wet fabric. Minutes later, one girl with your group who is floating right next to you looks over and is like, "Oh wow, she's a mermaid!"

That other awkward moment when everyone decides to stop at a sand bar, and you decide to stay in your tail so you swim up to the bank and sit there in the shallows minding your own business while the others are talking about chugging some alcohol and for some reason they form a circle around you and you just look up at everyone standing over you chugging. O-K. haha

Oh man! That sounded like it could have been fun! :D I've always wanted to take my tail down the river, but ours are so shallow (and I'm so blind) that I'd certainly be in for some trouble! Hahahaha!

My awkward mer-moment goes like this... you're in a hotel room, you have a queen-sized bed, and you're as single as a single-celled organism... and your tail needs a place to sleep. So, you wrap yourself up in a restraining cocoon of blankets and panic all night about if you'll accidentally kick your cute little bed-buddy out of bed or not!

This was my first public event as a volunteer mermaid (not my gig lol), I had met up with a few mers and a professional mermaid at a Pirate Fest locally, and when i was about to get my tail from finfun on, I slipped and fell. (We were at the boat launch). I ended up getting a scrape on my knee, but it wasn't too bad. Didnt even bleed. But my shorts got wet lmao. I was fine, not hurt.

That’s me!! Big ol floatty butt! I have an early video of me in my finfun trying to dive down and ended up floating back up like a cork. It took a while for me to get underwater for any length of time. Now its just practice to stay there.

I'm really sorry people are doing that. When I was pregnant, I'd heard so many stories of this happening that I fully expected it. And it never happened, even once! Which is good, as I hate being touched most of the time. Friends decided it must be the tattoos and being a surly type in black. :p lol But people also totally changed toward me... asking me about my due date, talking to me about pregnancy, helping like immediately when I'd drop something. That actually continued, the average type of person who used to never say a word to me will ask me for my opinion on things when I'm with my daughter. lol

ANYWAY, maybe you need a maternity shirt with a big HANDS OFF on it. Maybe they'll get it. Maybe carry pepper spray and point it while telling them, "I'm hormonal and done with humans touching my belly!" That ought to do it. haha

:p Been there, done that.

Did all my scuba diving in cold murky quarries (except for the two ocean dives off the coast of DE, and the one in the St Lawrence River.... and the high altitude one in a Virginia lake). Full neoprene coverings are my friend (even tho somewhat claustrophobic now).

Even more fun is mermaiding on a Chesapeake bay beach (Rock Hall MD), with no mask, cause murky, so, just tail. The Bay has about 3 rocks, all of which are carefully charted... except for the riprap rocks everywhere to prevent erosion (which is what sand does, it moves).

yuh, swimming swimming swimming over the murky shallows in your Fin Fun tail and... scraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaape....

There are random stingrays too... it happened to the Pocahontas guy... (John Smith, therte's a place called Stingray Point where he apparently stabbed a ray with his sword... and got stabbyed back. He fell so ill he told his guys to dig his grave. But recovered in time for supper... which was stingray.

They're actually avoidable if you do the "stingray shuffle" and slide your feet around the bottom rather than stomping down...

I feel this soooooooooooooooo much. I never could swim in feet. Bleah, flounder flounder. I used fins since I knew they existed (pair o fins). I also swam with the mermaid kick fairly often before I knew it was a thing.

In open or deep water I NEED my fins... or fin... though I am quite capable of floating and derping and not drowning without.

I keep a pair under the deck bungees of the kayak. I once was in open water (back bay of Chincoteague Island VA) snorkelling, about 6' of water, totally over my head. It got late in the afternoon and I had to get back in the boat and couldn't... too tired. So put the fins back on and swam up over the deck. I keep a pair of fins there now, always, as a safety thing.
