The swim went fintastic! Our local YMCA pool allows monofins and tails so we went in the early afternoon. Had the whole shallow section to ourselves. Two hour swim and he got comfortable enough to ditch the noodle and hold onto my arm while he propelled both of us to the halfway marker and back

Hooray for first swims, Phaylenn :) Sounds like you two had a blast, and I'm glad they allow fins and tails!.
I just had a first swim at my new gym. I left the old one because A. it was getting $uper expensive (they kept raising the rates on everyone)
and B. they didn't have a pool.
Construction on a brand new City Sports gym right across from my workplace was just completed last month. A few weeks ago, I thought to check it out.
Holy moly, the pool is gorgeous and housed in an atrium style enclosure. While it's only 3 lanes wide, it's near Olympic sized in length.
Yesterday I dove in with my Mahina fin and was finally able to just swim submerged for what felt like forever. The last pool I swam in was a super teensy hotel pool, so this felt wonderful.
The only drawback; my ankles got a bit raw from the monofin foot pockets, since I'd never had the chance to swim so hard in it before. Some areas look and feel like little burns, so no monofin swim for me today.
Making sure my form was nice and fluid, I got quite the work out!
I also got a lot of "OMG you have a mermaid fin on, I thought I was seeing things!" from a few of the other swimmers ;)
After that, I think there will be a few more people that will be swimming with mahina monofins too, hehe! One woman was like, "That's amazing. I'm ordering one as soon as I get home!"
And of course I was thinking, 'Yes, join usssss!' :cthulhu:

aside from other life drama, i'm just gonna share something that was good this week.

My boss knows very well that i am immersed into "this whole mermaid thing." In fact when he requested for my name pin he put in Ariel for me :P ( remember that i work at the disneystore)
and then two days ago he actually asked if i had any sort of other name that i go by and what pronunctation of my name (andrea) did i prefer. "aundrea, AHN-dreh-ah, AND-dre-ah".. then i said "tbh it doesnt matter. people have called me andrew, angela, sandra, angie, ang-drea, angie-la, anjula..."
then he asks if there was an actual mermaid name that i go by. Here's how it went down:

me: i go by SeaGlass. Seaglass siren is the username i use online.
boss: so if i actually radioed you, and called you "seaglass" you'd actually respond?
me: yep!
boss: i appreciate that you have a very interesting hobby and that you are committed to your hobby. props to you.

Yesterday was my birthday and I had a great time. It was my 32nd which is a big deal for my mom too because it's her reminder that shell be 50 in a few months. We made a big deal out of it and went to Medieval Times for a mommy/daughter date. It was awesome as always and our knight won the tournament.

:) Excited for you to get it! I know it was a long wait for it, and I seriously can't explain how grateful I am for your patience <3 The entire tail was hand painted, no airbrushing. Some of the stripes are a bit off, I was going to repaint them after it was together but short of painting at least 2/3 of the tail with several layers of white to redo them I was worried the extra layers would make the tail really stiff! Can't wait to see pictures and the video!

Edit- Also, I hope you enjoy and love the surprise I put in there!

I bought my first tentree shirt yesterday. they gave me a code to register online that tells me where they're planting my trees and what kind.

10 Acacia trees will be planted in ethiopia. and then they gave me an info graphic on ethiopia and a yearly calendar of when they schedule planting, when rainy season is, etc.
the code they gave me is a piece of metal that i plan on collecting and making either tiny ornaments for a christmas tree or a bracelet... or little trinkets to hand in my computer room. not sure what to do with it yet *o*

EEEEEE! I'm so happy! I finally got the hang of this mermaid swim style! When I went for my weekly swim yesterday, I did spins! I didn't have to think, "Have to do this" or any other doubts, I just got in the water and started rolling my body. I did spins from both sides, from right side and from left side. It felt so natural. I went under all the lanes when nobody but me was there. IT WAS SO MUCH FUN!!

The next step for me, is practicing breath hold. I haven't been practicing breath holding much. I just go with whatever I have. I'm assuming with more swimming the breath holding gets better?

THIS!! You can make $12.50 working at Starbucks, and there you'll get a whole shift. Don't go less than $20 MINIMUM. In fact, if you're going to have a business as a model, I would recommend having a day rate ($100 a day is a good place to start) for gigs over 4 hours, and a half day rate for anything from 0-4 hours. That means, if it's 15 minutes, you charge the half-day rate.

This does 2 things: it sets you up as a serious model who will get paid for her work, and it also keeps people from nickel-and-dimeing your time, which is a nightmare with any kind of freelance. If half or day rates don't fly with this "art director," (quotations because a legit one usually won't give you so little for that kind of gig), then work out a flat rate for a certain number of poses/classes/days, and do it so that you're not being horribly exploited.

In spite of all that, congrats on the callback!

My first swim in my mermaid tail is TONIGHT! <3 I am SO EXCITEEEEDDD. Was gonna take it last weekend but my legs and feet were so screwed up after all the running around I did at the sci-fi on last weekend that I didn't think I'd survive flailing around in a monofin on top of it all. But I am SO READY FOR TONIGHT! My best friend is coming with me, and my other friend/her sister is the head lifeguard tonight (and is the one who was helping me practice my dolphin kick) so she's totally cool with me bringing my tail to the pool.

I'll admit though, I'm also a tiiiiiiiny bit nervous because I'm not so great at having attention focused on me and I feel like that'll definitely happen when I show up in the pool wearing a mermaid tail... But hopefully I can get through it without getting too uncomfortable. XD

Also, I'll double-check once I get there on if they'll let me take video and pics of my tail. They're normally SUPER strict on their no-cameras policy, but lifeguard-friend may be able to make an exception. If not, I won't push it. :P

For the first time in my life and my nearly-a-decade-long cosplay history, I ordered a costume online. I was a little disappointed when the fine print about custom sizing overrode the big advertised "no extra charge" policy and there was an extra fee to make it large enough for me, but I understand that it honestly does cost them more to make because of the extra material involved. I wish they were more up-front about the extra materials fee, but okay. Any way, I got a message today saying that my costume has shipped! Yay! I'm so excited to put it on, even though it will take 2-4 weeks to get here by the shipping estimate they gave me when I ordered. So much excite!

I need to add to this thread, because I'm super excited over the fact that I swam with my eyes open in a pool!
A silly thing to be crazy excited about, but it was a chlorine pool, and it didn't kill my eyes!
So I'm also a contact lens wearer (near sighted), and while things were a tad blurry, my focus was slightly better underwater than above.

I used to swim in clean (moving) river water as a kid, and opened my eyes all the time. Then I tried this in a chlorine pool. It was so painful I was afraid to open them ever again after that. Add the contacts to that later on when I turned 16, and it was goggles always.
So yesterday I found out about the San Jose University Aquatic Center pool, and after work, I jetted over there with my monofin, took my lenses out, and brought my glasses along so I could see where I was going between the showers and pool.
When I first stuck my face in the water and blinked my eyes open, no stinging, no burning.
It felt weird to swim with them open, but I'll just have to get used to it again. ;)

So I had a bit of a dumb day at work (my boss is kind of a crazy sketchy lunatic doing a lot of tax evasion and skeevy illegal shit), and was tired and cranky and kind of depressed... Then I stepped through the front door of my house after my shift to find a HUGE box sitting on my couch!

A friend of mine in Florida, who I've known for years, had mentioned that she was sending me a surprise, but I had literally zeeeero clue what it was supposed to be because she was asking all of these weird questions about colors, sitting positions, and things like that... So I was SUPER stunned to see such a huge box! D:

So I started the MERBUTT project in March. REMEMBER ALL THOSE RANDOM QUESTIONS THAT DID NOT INVOLVE BACON? Yes. That was the beginning of it all. THE BEGINNING OF THE END.

Now, two months and thus about 216 hours of work later, IT IS COMPLETE. I didn't use all 287 little pieces I made, but more than 11 skeins of yarn went into it. Each little part was stitched onto the body individually. There is a bunch of cloth lining it, too. I have also learned that sewing machines are just as horrendous as I had originally thought based on observation alone. They are Satan incarnate. DON'T TOUCH THEM. THEY WILL SEW YOU DOWN AND PREPARE A DEMON-SUMMONING CIRCLE IN THREAD. Then Benedict Cumberbatch will appear and eat everything in your fridge. All the stitches you can see were done by hand, but the hidden ones were done with a machine and dang. Even the little light on that thing is hot as hell. I'm lucky to have made it out alive and with all of my fingers. (... *Counts.*)

You know those giant balls of fluff they use as snow in cartoons that would probably be sleet or slow-motion hail in real life? That's what we think falling snow looks like until we see it in real life and we're like, "What is this white dust? WHERE ARE THE FLAKES?" When it's winter here, the 'snow machines' at holiday shows are usually either sparkles or bubbles. They had an 'ice skating rink' in an outdoor mall and it was legit just white plastic full of cuts from the blades of real ice skates they were giving kids so they could 'ice skate' on plastic. Wat?

Anyway, try not to get it too dirty. If you do, I would not recommend putting it in a washing machine. Hand washing is better so it won't get caught/tugged on too much. Keeps irons away from it- a lot of the yarn is synthetic and WILL melt if make them experience FIRE. To dry it, lay it out as flat as you can and flip it as needed to make sure all of it dries. I would recommend also putting it out in the sun if it's warm enough or near a fan or something just 'cause it's so thick. I really don't think the 'wash and care' instructions on the yarn labels anticipate my giant projects. If it's too much trouble and if you trust the dry cleaners in your area, maybe have a professional deal with it. They're used to quilts and yarn blankets, I think.

The little green bag looks gross, I know. I was aiming for 'purse made of algae,' but by the time I got to it I was so tired I just made a wallet. Oh, and don't forget Dave's SPAGHETTI AND MEAT SAUCE[****]. I made it more so he could smile and feel thought of rather than for actual use 'cause I didn't think he'd want to go in public with a pasta bag? I don't know him that well, but I didn't want to embarrass him too badly. You guys have my permission to alter it if he wants a strap or a belt loop or something on it.

I struggle a lot with depression, which I can usually manage most times of the year, but as soon as winter hits SAD hits me like a fucking train. This year was particularly bad.
[**] Back at the end of February, we'd had everything set to go to move into our dream house... And then the day of the move, three hours after we were supposed to have started moving everything, we found out that the owners had sold the house out from under us to somebody else. :T We ended up scrambling to find another place, a smaller, older building with a bunch of problems that we're paying $300 more per month on than the dream house we almost had. I still get kind of salty about it, sometimes.
[***] Back in mid-April, my cat got out of the house and went missing for four days. I was stressed out and strung out, didn't eat or sleep the entire time and after I made a "MISSING" post on the Facebook page of the rescue group I got him from, I got... A lot of stress and hateful comments from people that made the whole situation worse. I was a wreck on FB that week.
[****] When she was asking me weird and unusual questions to get an idea of how to make the MERBUTT, she mentioned that she felt bad for not making Dave anything, and wanted to make something for him but didn't know him very well, so she decided to ask what his favorite food was. Dave was all like, "... Uhm. Pasta? With like... meat sauce?" And thus, the Spaghetti and Meatsauce coin purse was born, and it super brightened up his day because he's been passed out on the couch with the flu all day. I should get pics of that thing, it's amazing.



BUT YEAH. So I got a neat thing I totally wasn't expecting at all, and it's super comfy and I've been wearing it all night. <3 The best part is that the light-blue scales on the belly match my housecoat, which I've been wearing with the MERBUTT all night too. :D

Yesterday I got a random call from a local bird breeder and he gave me an Imperator peachick because it had curled toes and he didn't have time to fix it because he was going on a trip. The significance of this is the Imperator - which is a type of peafowl (peacock) is endangered! Another name for them is the Indo-Chinese green peafowl. I have been wanting to raise them for years and I finally get to help out this beautiful endangered bird! :swoon:

Eeeep! I'm so excited! I have almost convinced my parents to move my computer desk in the family room into the guest room and replace it with a large aquarium! So after my class today my dad and I went to Petco because we needed to pick up some dog food and some bacteria and water conditioner for my fish tanks, we looked at the large aquariums and found one we both like and its on sale for $250 until July 1st. Now I just have to convince them even more so I can actually get it before the sale ends.

Im so happy lately! I went for the first swim of the Summer yesterday. I'm going to go practice in my spandex tail and monofin in an hour or so.
AND... I'm going to apply for an audition for The Sacramento Mermaids! The audition is Monday June 22nd so I hope it's not until after 12:30 because of my math class. But I'm so excited!!![emoji4]

I'm really happy because I am going to possibly have my tail by the end of this summer, since its been so long I'm resending my measurements hopefully this week? I'm also cleared to possibly buy a new top to go with it? I got some new nail polish which suits my mersona WONDERFULLY. Thanks to Mom helping me with funds I was able to get my first 2 monofins (Finis Foil and Mahina Merfin) ordered. Better yet, I just checked the tracking on the Foil and it should be here Friday! The Merfin should be here Monday! And I'm just really really excited to finally have a monofin. The fabric stores nearby don't have much nylon/spandex which is what I want to use for my first tail I think but I was able to order a bunch of possible swatches from spandexworld and hopefully that'll get here next week!

Very pretty. I had turquoise highlights in my hair when i was in 6th to 7th grade. I really liked it... Might have to convince my mom to let me put rainbow highlights in my hair, but after what happened after I dyed my hair with Splat she probably won't let me.[emoji22]

I went to a salon and had it done there, since it had to be bleached. Thankfully, the lady who did it (the only salon worker allowed to touch my hair since she is not scissor happy) said my hair was in such good shape it could survive a whole head bleach and come out still soft. She laughed though since she knew I didn't want that at all.

I believe the brand she used was Paul Mitchelle so that I could get a more London Topaz blue rather than a straight ultramarine.

As much as I hate to resort to a non-tail costume, I have to make this a walking tail and I am out of time! The plan is to use my shell bodice from previous parades, a sequin fabric mermaid-style skirt - snug through the hips and flaring out at the bottom, and in lieu of a fluke, an iridescent bustle of sorts that will flare out like hip fins. Lots of seaweed garland to embellish and a shell, pearl, and plant mermaid circlet crown. I can't wait to share photos!

It's heavy enough not to be swimmable! It's more like a bib than corset, the front hangs off the bottom of a bra. My back is uncovered except for the strap.

During swim lessons one of the teachers told the kids to go over to deep end to do some diving. One of the kids responded "We're going to die". I told him no you're not gonna die.
