Just got the news that my husband and I are going to be stationed in Portsmouth, Virginia for 3 years!
While I'll be sad to leave the west coast, I have to admit, I like the idea of being a less than a day's drive from home- which is in WV. I know my family and friends will be happy to hear that at least ;) I know there are lots of mermaids in VA :) Also this means I can actually go to MerMania now! The biggest obstacle to that was the cost of plane tickets. Pretty excited about that!!
I'll be happy to get away from the constant depressing rain and cloud cover that is the Pacific Northwest, but not looking forward to colder/harsher winters and the summer humidity. Also, snow??? I haven't been in a "normal" climate in 8 years (been in California and WA all that time), haha. I've seen snow all of 2 times in those 8 years :P I've heard summer is really lovely in VA though!

The REAL new year starts at Feb 8th!

That means we currently are still in the year of the sheep, which explains a lot (it's said to be a terribly unlucky year always, which is why chinese birth rate drops very low in sheep years- sorry, sheepborn peeps!),
and the next one is bound to be much better!

I have't posted here in a long time (Since like may/june 2014), my life took a dive (divorce, had to move back home with the parents, he got to keep the dog... as my step-dad is allergic and there's no room for 180 lbs of slobbery love that was my dog)....

Anyway... despite all that crap that made my life hell in 2014... I turned it around in the best possible way.

I've since moved out of my parent's house, I've had a wonderful job working as a veterinary tech. at a small hospital, got all my stuff from my ex-husband, including my 2 cats. (Sadly the dog had to stay with him, I just don't have the place for such a large dog), I also added to my family of pets, 2 of the most adorable dogs ever, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy.

I also started dating again. Turns out I'm not a lost cause, I happened to message another person on a dating website when I saw that he too was going through the big D (divorce). That simple message turned into the best thing ever, we're now engaged and planning our wedding. The super-awesome kicker, he appreciates my geekyness especially in regards to being a mermaid. (My ex thought I was a total weirdo, not in a good way, and hated that I found new friends and a new hobby).

Since my ex and I were married for 10 years (YES! TEN YEARS!), He now had to give me half of his 401K (it's not a lot, I can't even buy a new car with it), but you know what I can buy with it.... That's right, a full silicone tail. That day finally arrived, because in CA it takes like a year to divorce, another to get any money if you get it... yeah, took forever, so while I'm waiting for it, I turned my life around without him (he was emotionally abusive, and it was so slow I didn't even see it coming!)

I'm so proud of my life right now! Everything is different, and it's the best thing that ever happened to me.

I'm happy for a few reasons:

Firstly, my little rat Disco is looking good! He had a lump removed on Tuesday and decided to remove all the glue and most of the stitches overnight, meaning the vet had to stitch him back together the next day... He's now went from Wednesday till now without undoing the vets work and looks like he's healing up nicely, so I'm a lot happier!

I also treated myself to some bath bombs from lush and a new set of pyjamas today. Sometimes it's the little things that count! [emoji4]

Playing with it in Photoshop, intending to just clean up the line drawing before making a vector from it, I ended up with this awesome carved-in-stone version just for fun.

The watermark is just for intellectual property purposes, and won't be on the final logo design. I'm also going to clean up her trident a bit more, too

I have been lacking in my ability to finish up the Emerald Queen tail I am working on since my sewing room is in the process of moving which has spiked my anxiety, so I have been crocheting mermaid dolls instead. I finished one last night (Well, at 4 am) and have sent her out as a gift to another mermaid. :)

I often crochet to deal with my anxiety and depression, and giving away a mermaid that helped me through a rough spot to someone as a gratitude gift makes me feel good.

I know I rarely post anything here, am more of a lurker, but I thought I should probably share this, I've been taking weekly swimming lessons since early January. Despite the timing this wasn't a new year resolution thing, was just how things worked out. I couldn't swim at all but had no fear of the water, way back in the day when I went on holiday with the parents I'd happily walk out into the sea until I was almost neck deep, seems stupid now but when you are a kid you feel almost indestructible right? So why did I never learn? Well never could find the incentive and my friends were more into gaming than going to the pool so I never saw the point. Fast forward a few decades and I find this community which I almost instantly fell in love with, and that's when I realised, if I'm to at least try swimming like a mer, I need to be able to swim as a human. So that's how I ended up taking these lessons, and how are they going? Rather well to be honest. I'm at the point where I do better without a float as I find it gets in the way. I'm definitely the fastest of the group and can do the entire length of the beginners pool (13 meters) on one breath. Began backstroke without floats at the end of the last lesson and again outpaced everyone else. However there is one thing I do need to work on, and it is a big one, breathing. Really having trouble synchronising everything when swimming face down, I get what I have to do, it's just doing it without becoming a unsynchronised mess. Pretty sure this is one of those things I'll suddenly get and everything will click into place. So am I liking being in the water, hell yeah, for now I want to get good enough to go goof about in the deep end of the main pool. Will I end up confident enough to try a mer tail, who knows, time will tell I guess. But for now, I probably wouldn't be at this point if I hadn't found this wonderful community.

So apparently, a friend of mine who lives about a 20-30 minute drive from me was at the pool not that long ago and someone was there swimming in a mermaid tail! Which means there's a pool on the island that hasn't completely banned them! It's a fair ways away from where I live, but I might just be desperate enough to try to work out some way of getting out there at least once or twice to practice in my tail.

One of my best friends just got a new bathing suit for herself, another's planning on picking up another soon, and I've just gotten a new bikini for myself... We're gonna look into it over the next week, might call the pool and ask about it (or at least, one of my friends will; I'm really, really awful with talking on the phone, oops).

That is great news! I am glad it is going well for you! I am sure it helps to have a goal to work to such as being able to swim in a tail. That certainly would be a big incentive for me if I didn't know how to swim. I hope you can also find someone to swim with you. I love my friends, but mine are also gamers so it is hard convincing someone to swim with me.

I am really happy because my boyfriend is going to take me swimming somewhere for Valentine's Day! My boyfriend has told me he supports me being a mermaid, but he isn't all that big on swimming, which is a problem for me because he is my best friend and really the only person I hang with, so I really want him to swim with me because I don't really have anyone else to swim with. All winter I keep telling him how badly I wanted to go swimming with him and now he is going to take me swimming! Yay! He told me to bring sunscreen so I am wondering if we are going to the beach. I really hope so. :)

I was in a similar sort of place around October last year. Admittedly I could swim, but I wasn't very confident and was convinced I'd never be able to float or tread water. I was fed up of not having the confidence to get into the sea on holiday (when you go on a boat trip and they stop to let you swim) and so decided to take lessons. I came across mermaiding around the same time and that was all the motivation I needed! I'm also slowly working on a silicone tail which is giving me the motivation to keep going.

Breathing can take a bit of time but you'll get there. I was really good at inhaling water when I started learning bilateral breathing with the front crawl... I still struggle there a bit, but it's definitely getting better!

I had my first swim in a mermaid tail yesterday, and it was also my first time in a diving pool. It was sooooooo amazing! If I've leaned one thing, it's that I'm VERY very floaty! I found it nearly impossible to sink at all! Seems stupid that I used to be convinced I'd never be able float... [emoji38]

1- Markiplier has posted a video (well shared one) about the content issues with YouTube, similar to what Iona was dealing with and he is trying to assist in raising awareness of the issue to help it get fixed. With over 11 million subscribers to his channel, I am sure he will help in some way and hopefully that helps Iona and the rest of us, too.

2- I have started to develop my own mermaid crochet doll based on things that I wish the patterns for the dolls I already make had or attributes that I think would have worked better. So far, I have a fluke and part of a tail and it's going great. When I have the pattern written, polished, and a PDF put together of it, I,m going to start selling them on my Etsy.

3- I have been talking about how I needed to get a laptop so that I could work on my design work away from home and to have a computer on the go in general when I need it. My fiance found one that runs all my adobe software wonderfully for a steal at $206! This is after employee discount (since we got it at his store) and the current tech coupon they had out. I'm on it now. It's a lovely Asus.

Eeepp!! I had my 3rd monofin swim tonight - and couldn't believe the difference since last time! I know it seems obvious, but it really does get easier with practice! I so can't wait to be able to swim in my tail again!!! (I'm all hyper and excited... and knackered... think I should probably go to bed!)

One of my high school's clubs decided to do an evening in the climbing gym for club bonding.

I'm in my schools advanced climbing class, so I was there to help the teachers troubleshoot. I spent two hours manning a platform 25 feet up in the air.

It was absolutely fantastic. I got so much more comfortable.

Had a hard day at work and was tempted to put this in the "Bitch it Out" thread, but for the sake of the positivism I'd *like* to feel about this situation I'll put it here. :)
The cliff notes; I'm a Counselor for International students at a University. Didn't even get to my office this morning before finding out a student of mine was a suicide risk and could not be found, (someone ran out to the parking garage to tell me when I arrived).
MANY hours of stress and worry and some disagreement with other administrators ensued.
The "HAPPY"? I found her! She is getting help and although angry with me, she is SAFE. So I consider this one a happy ending. Focusing on the happy.

Just fixed my parent's coffee machine (the one-buton-makes-everything-straight-from-the-21st-century kind of beast ;) ). :dance: The water supply was clogged, so the pumping unit couldn't build up pressure. Saved about a hundred euro for a technician... :)

So, my gym class it's doing a kayak emergency procedure unit, which means basically I'm spending the class swimming beneath the boats.

I resurfaced near my gym teacher and he said, "It's so cool that you can do that. I just see this dark shape moving through the water and I think 'what IS that?!'"

I was happy. Apparently I look surreal even sans tail. :)

So, my gym class it's doing a kayak emergency procedure unit, which means basically I'm spending the class swimming beneath the boats.

I resurfaced near my gym teacher and he said, "It's so cool that you can do that. I just see this dark shape moving through the water and I think 'what IS that?!'"

I was happy. Apparently I look surreal even sans tail. :)

So a week or two ago I showed my best friend some videos of Hannah Fraser. She started freaking out telling me how cool my hobby is and how brave we are. I'm going to try and turn her into a mermaid. She's super shy and self conscious but I feel like she'd make an awesome dark mermaid/siren. I'm like super stoked that she thinks it's so cool and might be willing to try swimming in a tail. She's also super supportive about it too!

So in back at my old job (which is meh but at least the pay is good) and I have a new coworker (who sits at my old desk) and she's like flipping awesome. I found out her daughter is in love with the little mermaid. And being the big Disney person that I am goes "she she's basically you're little mermaid". She starts laughing and goes yes!! We then talk about mermaid tails and I slip in that I'm a mermaid and she's like "OH MY GOD REALLY? So you're also a part time mermaid. That's amazing!!" And then we started talking about Disney and she asks why I left in the first place if I loved it so much. I told her fish gotta get paid too. But I honestly miss my old job. "I want to be where my people are" and she's dying of laughter. Anyway we go back to our tail convo and I find out that her daughters father is black and she told me that it's hard trying to find black mermaid anything (I can believe it) But there was a rattle on sale and there was a white mermaid and a black mermaid and she ended up buying both because she's white and her husband is black xD
after a long talk it was agreed that we are gonna hang out :)

after work I went to the mall to look for a swim top. I walked into Victoria's Secret because I did notice a few potential tops and I tell a sales associate that I need help looking for a top for a mer gig that I have May 3rd with Dreams Take Flight. She starts mad flipping out about mermaids and she was just so excited. She ended up finding me the perfect top I can doctor up.. And it supports my boobies so well and gives them a good shape 0-0

ANYWAY! I'm glad people haven't looked down on my mer hobby :P

My neoprene came this morning and I just got some more red and white paint and textile medium at Michaels. The Michaels by my work never has any textile medium so I'm super stoked that the one by my college has it, they only had 2 bottles so I got them both. I really wish I had the day off today so I can mix my paint colors and cut out my fluke pieces. I'm super happy to be making my first realistic sequin/neoprene tail!

EEEP after weeks of waiting, I finally heard back from my school on if I received my requested student grant money to help make my neoprene tail (it's a school project)!!!! I was just sitting there and remembered how much I absolutely love mermaids and how insanely important they are to me. More than that though, I love the creation method behind pearls. A quick, scarcely scientific explanation is: when an irritation enters a clam, it surrounds it with a pearl sac and coats it with layer after layer of calcium until it becomes a pearl. I was raised in an abusive household and when I moved out, life still never stopped being hard. But I embrace the idea of taking a trying experience and still being able to create something beautiful from it. That's a beautiful tattoo Marius! I have my own sea star sketch on my foot, and it has similar meaning. You can tear a sea star apart, and as long as it has part of its center, it will regenerate everything it lost -- can't get a sea star down! Also, I put it on my foot so whenever I was feeling dejected and looking down, I would see it and remember to look up. It's awesome to have your own work on your body.

My happy news is that I was telling my husband about the dream I had where I got a Marbella's tail, and he said, "you know what? When our business becomes profitable, we're going to get you that tail, and then take it on vacation somewhere beautiful to do some shoots with it." :D

Non mermaid related, BUT I read that Petco is having their "Dollar Per Gallon" aquarium sale again! I'm really wanting to get a 55 gallon aquarium and start a female betta sorority! I've been wanting to do this FOREVER(since I've developed my betta fish obsession and failed to breed bettas, so since 2010 maybe longer) I want to build my own stand(because aquarium stands are F-ing expensive) and put this the tank into the living room, mostly because one of the walls is mirrors and I think it would really look good in there, plus the room would get used more. The one thing I was looking for to put into the tank was little ceramic sake cups, but i cannot find a large set of them, or I was going to do a overgrown castle ruin theme, or something. I also need/want to redesign my 30 gallon into a Atlantis ruin theme. Oh boy! I've just realized how much i rambled, don't judge me i'm obsessed with fish tanks and I know i have a problem but its like midnight here and i had an energy drink at work and i'm just going to stop here because i'm just rambling more.... If you read this WHOLE thing i'll send you a hug and high five... okay i'm done now.

Unfortunately it's not filmed but opening night went so well!! It was honestly the most intimidating performance I've ever had to give. We spend a year just watching and observing all the other acting companies and this is finally our time to show our merit and it's just overwhelming. One of the artists I look up to most in our program came up to me afterwards and said "You are just riveting to watch." I about died 😢😢😢 I've spent so much of this year wondering if acting was the right career path and last night just helped reconfirm my love for it.

Unfortunately it's not filmed but opening night went so well!! It was honestly the most intimidating performance I've ever had to give. We spend a year just watching and observing all the other acting companies and this is finally our time to show our merit and it's just overwhelming. One of the artists I look up to most in our program came up to me afterwards and said "You are just riveting to watch." I about died  I've spent so much of this year wondering if acting was the right career path and last night just helped reconfirm my love for it.

Break a leg! I don't have to tell you how difficult acting can be as a career. Keep working hard and making good connections that you trust and never be afraid to walk away from an "opportunity" that makes you uncomfortable or gives you a bad vibe. Keep loving it and doing what you love!

Well...

I got my FIRST TAIL yesterday after being in love with mermaids for 10 years and a member here since 2012. It's my favorite color and is custom tailored. I have struggled with depression for a very long time, but every time I get sad I just put the tail on, and nothing bothers me anymore :)

Also, I launched a Facebook page, website, and email address today for my mersona, and then found out that there are TWO mers living really close to me, so there's the magic of three! I am beyond happy at long, long last.

Yes! I'm able to add two reasons for being happy to this thread.

One. I got an email back from Mahina, the fin I ordered was on back order, but only until the 16th of this month. So that should be on the way and I can stop freaking out about whether or not it will arrive ever (and I don't have to talk on the phone w/ anyone about it).

Two. I also ordered a Finis Foil. It was too small! But, it turns out that they have a super easy return/exchange policy. I chose to exchange it for the next size up (now I can get both my feet in the fin without having them cramp/feel like I need to shave some of the bone off just to get it to fit. :O) And you guys... the new fin already arrived today. What?! Now all I need to do is send back the small one, and make a new tail to fit it.

I will throw in a bonus happy - now I'll have two fins that will fit both my sister and I, so I can force her to mermaid w/ me! Muahahahahha! Operation multiply commences at dawn! (haha - not really. I'll still be in the cove asleep.) :lol:

I had a job interview today and it went swimmingly :) I now have a followup interview on Monday! Super duper excited.

My holo Lumiere paint shipped from JoAnn's today *wrings hands*. I can't wait for it to get here! I paid $2.64 for it, though I did have to pay $7 shipping.

I got new contacts after wearing these ones for 5 months (ask my mother why). My eye doctor gave me free sunglasses and we talked about swimming with contacts...I have to wear goggles over them, but it's doable! :D

So, about a year ago, a pre-teen geared comic book called Roller Girl came out. It's about a girl named Astrid going to roller derby summer camp and coming into her own as a derby girl and athlete.

I used to play derby, but quit my junior league for the sake of my knees. I want some cartilage left for the adult leagues, you know? But every time I see this book (I shelve at my local library and this book has a pretty high circ rate) I realize how much I miss derby.

So tonight, I read a few pages as I shelved children's comics. It totally lit a fire under my butt. I decided to skate to school tomorrow (it's my last day of my senior year of HS, so why not?), finally washed out my derby pads, and put on my skates while doing laundry.

Got in the hang of it so fast.

And here's why I'm so thrilled: I CAN STILL DO ALL THE STOPS!!!! T-STOPS, PLOW STOPS, TURN AROUND TOE STOPS!!! I didn't really try the hockey stop because I didn't have enough space in the laundry room, but I did swivel one of my plow stops out a little to see if I could. I could.

I am so thrilled.

There's a bunch of hidden falls, rivers and lakes in the mountains around here from what I've been told, I can only guess at how freezing cold some of them must be.

So a few good things! I passed my driving test. I ordered a pair of Finis Zoomers that were gently used for my friend since her feet are bigger than mine and they came in the mail the other day. I also went to Hancock fabrics the store that's going out of business and bought 3 yards of spandex for $25, which will eventually be turned into a painted spandex tail for my friend. Emily, my best friend, will also eventually get a matching polycarbonate monofin like mine. She is so excited because I told her the difference between sirens and mermaids, so she decided to be a siren because she's into dark colors and luring men to their watery death and stuff. Anyway, once the pools at our houses get warmer we'll start the training! My goal is to eventually have silicone tails for both of us and start our entertainment business!

I went to Hancock yesterday too! Yay, 50% off spandex!! :D I got fabric for 3 different tails: mint, jade, and a bright crayon green. (I'm actually not HUGE into green, but those were the colors they had that I liked, and I realized afterwards that they were all a shade of green, haha!) I got a little extra in the mint and green because I'm hoping I can make an extra fluke cover and attach it to the bottom of my SunTail tails, now that I have a different monofin.

My only regret was that they had a GORGEOUS shiny brown spandex that I wanted for a steampunk mermaid tail - but it had NO give in one direction! :( And I'm still pretty new to sewing, esp. stretch fabrics, so I just didn't want to bother :T

Hi Guys!!!

I'm really happy because I just finished paying off my tail! I've been working with Fifi from Tiggs Tails since January and its like-- oh my god, I did this. I'm about to live my dream- something I never thought I would be able to do anytime soon. I'm newly turned 20 and I worked my ass off at school (full time student) and work ( Work 45 + hours a week) I never thought I could make this happen. Close to 2k USD on this tail and its just like WHHHAAATTTTTTTT

I'm rocking a 3.7 GPA and just got singed to a modeling agency, got my mermaid tail, and its just- unreal! AND IM GOING TO SEATTLE ON WEDNESDAY AHHH!!! SO EXCITEDDD

And my mom and I found out about a stable only about 30 minuets away. So we're going for a morning ride. First ride in years. So excited.

I've never had much opportunity to ride, because I live a suburb close to Chicago and before that I lived in New York City.

But I have worked with horses lots. There was a racing stable by my old house in a different Chicago suburb, and so every morning before kindergarten, I would go muck out the stalls of these race horses. Best time of my life. Never got to ride 'em, of course, but I did learn how to work with them, brush them, muck them out, just plain old cuddle with 'em.
