Is it terrible that Gem Stone and I met two (different) people at ComicPalooza who were considering buying realistic tails and they said 'well I follow this guy, the mertailor, on Facebook who sells them and his are amazing?' And we were like "oh honey no. Lemme tell ya" then told them about all the bad tails he makes for people then recommended the other tail makers and MerNetwork.  #sorrynotsorry one of them was this girl http://mermaid-kalo.deviantart.com she does mermaid art and it's amazing! One of her pieces reminds me of Raina's tail.

(Edit: Just for you, Arion; dare one say that they put the "mer" in mer*e (sorry I can't swear; en Francais ou Anglais!)
What we have here is classic style vs. substance. Simple logic dictates that the more time one spends promoting oneself, the less time one will have to produce quality work. You don't see < insert name of tail maker you like; Raven I CHOOSE YOU! > plastering their scaly mug all over the internet for self-promotion; their work speaks for them! :mermaid kiss:

Triton bless you and your amazing gifs, Arion <3
And yeah, I've been seeing him spamming this stupid "Get Jimmy Fallon to come see me and see how awesome I am!1" thing and it's like... I understand he really wants to promote his business and he's apparently been dying to get back into the spotlight since his damned "My Strange Addiction" bit (which he has apparently taken to spamming up his page with every single time TLC does a friggin' re-run), but honestly... Chill out, Eric.

So I just noticed Eric's latest update and caught this:
The Citrus County Citrus Convention and Visitors Bureau has made it a mission and has started a social media campaign (they even made a YouTube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mr5564ZEQLE) see video in this article) to get Jimmy to visit Citrus County by daring him to join Eric Ducharme - a real merman, and only tailor of merman tails [...]
The only tailor of merman tails? ... Uh huh.
http://cdn01.cdnwp.celebuzz.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/14/jennifer-lawrence-10.gif
Pretty sure he's not the only tail company that makes merman tails...
At first I was like, "Y'know, maybe they just mean he's the only one in Citrus County!" and then I realized, nobody has given any indicators that that's what they mean. He's just "The One And Only Merman" and "The Only Merman Tailmaker"...
This is giving me Mermaid Melissa vibes.

Toughest decision ever,
Selling my silicone mermaid tail. Gonna go weep in the corner for a while. Ever since I lost weight it doesn't fit right and living in an apartment I just don't have the space for it. Also it's so heavy and using it for anything that's not wet is just out of the question. It's a gorgeous tail I just can't give it the home it needs.

Honestly if jimmy fallon were to visit and challenge Eric I would personally write and call the people of the station and mention that he is NOT the only merman and CERTAINLY NOT the only tailmaker! I would tell them that he has been duped. See this is what really gets me pissed. As someone said earlier...if they spend more time promoting themselves then their quality of work fails. Well....I think that has been proven time and time again :D Raven doesn't promote herself, we fans do it for her, same as with Thom, Jesse, Finfolk, and the countless others!
I almost posted on his #themerman or whatever post he put and wanted to say NUH UGH UH BITCH PLZ, YOUR ONE IN A MILLION AND THERE ARE BETTER ONES THAN YOU. but i knew that i would get deleted. Still think i should? :soap box:

Look, it's cool that he wants to promote his business and that he even has this opportunity to meet a major TV personality and get his name out there further to boost his business. And that's great! It also wouldn't be a problem if this were a "The original merman of Citrus County!" sort of thing, because honestly? That could very well be true (I didn't know "Citrus County" was even a place until he took up this campaign, to be honest). Hell, he could very well have backpedaled once people started calling him out and just said that that was what they'd meant but... Oh my god, he just keeps digging...

Maybe they should worry about oh...I dunno? Making tails for their customers and making sure they are of the highest quality possible, instead of posting things about this American comedian whom I as a Welsh teen only know of because of iCarly...and how he wants to have as much attention as possible. There was me thinking he made mermaid tails to make people's dreams a reality, not to be the IT girl at the party for special snowflakes.

Going to say my piece here quickly and then disappear for a bit and become a troll. (I apologies if this belongs in the b***h thread but I can't find it) Whilst I enjoy this community for it's knowledge and support, I do not feel comfortable posting on here any more. It is not due to threats or anything malicious of that nature, more due to the fact that I feel like every time I post something expressing my opinions, I usually end up feeling shot down or criticized for it (as I can imagine I will receive a flood of in this thread but you know, that's what I get for expressing myself on this forum). I do not feel safe to post on here, I have very low self esteem as it is, and to constantly get shot down is more than I'm willing to deal with at the moment.
Recently I made a post, expressing that I was not a fan that some tail makers were outright copying a product another tail maker had made. It is outright copying, there is no question about it but all I received in response was accusations of me thinking they were a threat to the original tail maker, which was not even the original intent of my message, Merely to express my distaste for it. AND then I had to read through having my avatar criticized. Which had nothing to do with anything we were talking about! My avatar is a personal representation of my support for the wonderful woman that made my tail, since I have no good photos of me in it. It simply implies that I want to show my support for her and that I don't really intend to buy from any other tail maker, simply because I like her style the most. There was never any malicious intent behind it but to have it criticized was rather hurtful. Originally it was just going to be "I <3 Merbellas" but I couldn't find a love heart design I liked enough, though I'm sure someone would have said something about that too.
THIS is the reason I am scared to post anything on this forum. Every time I hit that post button when I've posted something reflecting my personal opinion I fear the responses. I am aware that this is a forum, I should probably stop taking everything so personally but it is hard when I can't remember very many times being supported in a statement I've made.
So in conclusion I will be making no more posts after this for a very long while. I will probably never put my personal input into anything again, simply question or answers to the questions I know. Please note that these are simply all personal feelings of mine, nothing more and if I had the ability to delete my account... I probably would. Thank you all for your time.

I think it's moreso timing and placement of posts Selene. Which can be a little hard to learn. It's fine to express stuff, but it's better to have it in different threads that dont derail the main thread. That's when people get a bit sensitive. It's also hard water navigating how to talk about your criticisms of other tail makers without their customers getting upset. I have yet to figure out the right way to do it. There are tail makers I just dont like. So I appreciate that's tricky.
I love Arion but I think his post went a bit far in response to yours. He could of said talk about it in another thread or something like that, and he is also feeling defensive because his tail maker is finfolk and he loves them and is happy with his tail. You've raised valid points that other people have raised too, and it's okay to talk about them. Sometimes it's just a matter of timing, and placements in a thread. Arion makes good points too, and is used to dealing with a lot of "bullshitters" in the community who join to just start drama. He doesnt know you like I or a few others do from online, so he doesn't realize you're sincere ;) Arion and I BOTH sometimes jump to conclusions when something smells a bit "fishy" on the forum.
I hope you don't leave, you're wonderful and it's totally okay to be loyal to your tail maker- heck I am :D That's what my entire thread it. I think Arions post has been moved or deleted too, so no need to worry (it's not in the thread anymore) he is a really nice guy, and very passionate about finfolk the same way you are about merbellas. You strike me as a no bullshit kind of girl, so I think you and Arion might actually get along really well if you feel like a do-over. You know Raven and I first met by fighting on the forum in a very similar manner? And look at us now! Hahah :D

I did realized, after reading Selene's comment here, that I went a bit far. I admit that I was wrong and I publicly apologize to Selene for my mistake. I do understand now that my words might have been harsh so I previously deleted my original comment on the merbella thread.
Selene, if you read this, I'm sorry, I'm an idiot and I would like you to consider staying here. Just the idea that you're leaving because of my stupid opinion makes me feel bad. I never meant to hurt your feelings about your loyalty to Raven, I actually respect that because I could have done the same thing for Finfolk. Like Raina just said, I believe as well we might have got off on the wrong foot and I want to make up for that.

I assure you Arion that I completely understand that you were just defending your tail maker. I've been watching your journey with Finfolk and am glad you finally got your dream tail so I could never hate anyone for defending someone who made their dream come true. There are absolutely no hard feelings, you're one of those people I really look up to on the forum because you're always so passionate and funny and honest and I understand that because I have been so quiet recently you may not know much about me kind of thing so obviously misunderstandings will occur :)

Really let that sink in for a second, and then complain about why this forum isn't all bubble kisses and moonlight farts!"
Well, that is a...profound...statement, made all the more so to me as my brother just now gave me a booster of the new Dungeons & Dragons miniatures set and I was lucky enough to pull my favourite: a Bronze Dragon, which looks like a cool European saurian dragon and is the sea/water-type of the Lawful Good-aligned dragons...and is complete fantasy.
Mermaids and dragons; my favourite fantasy creatures of which I try my best to find non-evil versions. Yet, just as I need to admit that, classically dragons are demons from Hell (in a Western sense, and capricious at best in an Eastern (which a Bronze would normally be)), mermaids are temperamental as the ocean and more prone to devour humans than to fall in love with them. It is wishful thinking, perhaps, to pretend that the mermaid community is going to be all Syrena, the Little Mermaid or the Mermaid of Zennor.
Still, the Bible's Book of Numbers suggests that Seraphim can also be fiery dragon servants of God, so that's the way I roll! :mermaid kiss:

Whilst I enjoy this community for it's knowledge and support, I do not feel comfortable posting on here any more. It is not due to threats or anything malicious of that nature, more due to the fact that I feel like every time I post something expressing my opinions, I usually end up feeling shot down or criticized for it.
I'm glad you decided to stay!
I totally get where you're coming from.
I realize this is a forum and not everyone will like or understand each other, etc.
What gets to me is when there is differential treatment.
Like; some people can express opinions freely, or say "something is so and so" and no one feels bothered;
and when another person does it, even if it's all facts and not just an opinion, they will get long sermons of how they're wrong.
There are of course things like this to consider:
It's fine to express stuff, but it's better to have it in different threads that dont derail the main thread.
Which is great advice.
But here again, some people will get chided if they don't adhere to this, and others will do exactly this and no one says anything.
In short; at least, if you decide to admonish others of certain things, don't do the very same things yourself.

I readily admit that I've been interested in your game ever since you first mentioned it to me. If you would like me to play yet don't want the hassle of new character creation, I have a low-mid-level Bronze Dragon whom I actually played in the World's Largest Dungeon back in 2005 (I hope you have/allow Bronze Dragons in your campaign world!). The dragon is 5th Level (meaning that they just got their electrical breath weapon at half strength); I've had plenty of time to become acquainted with and fond of the Bronze, though I am quite intrigued by your especially aquatic dragons too! :mermaid kiss:
(Actually, I remember that my first June issue of DRAGON Magazine actually introduced the Pearl Dragon to 2nd Ed., but I imagine yours are different....)

No, I'm good, though I do appreciate the versatility of the d20 System. As for the d20 System....You have all twisted my arm, so I shall share one more little story with you, though only because it is dramatic (specifically, it is the second-most epic/dramatic thing I have ever done (or intended to do in-game):
If you have seen the cover of The World's Largest Dungeon, you know that there is a gargantuan Red Dragon in the centre of it. His name is Tyrus, Devourer of Kingdoms, and he is an Ancient Chaotic Evil dragon almost 1,000 years of age. I was Aeonstar, a Trumpet Archon (a sort of angel), who at epic levels would gain access to a 9th-Level spell from the Book of Exalted Deeds called Sanctify the Wicked. This spell required the target to roll a Will Save to resist, and if the Save failed the evil target would go through a year of Purgatory and emerge from it Lawful Good with superpowers! The plan was to, after having my party use spells/abilities to reduce Tyrus' odds of succeeding on a Will Save and increasing the Difficulty Class of the Will Save against my own spell, sacrifice one of my hard-earned levels to cast the spell and...

Yes it is...despite the fact that the most political merfolk normally ever get was summed up by Sebastian in "Under the Sea" and mildly trumped by the mermaid boss of the Kastolatian Sea in Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen, whose speech is as follows:
"What did King Gran ever do for us? We've been hunted by humans until now! But Empress Endora has promised us a world where we will be safe. I will not allow you to stand in the way of that world!"
No matter the player's Alignment, Charisma, or Reputation, they have no choice but to kill her, FOR THAT IS THE RULE OF THE VIDEO GAME!
This is also my point; a lot of people don't fully subconsciously differentiate between pictures and names assigned to game characters like the above and those of real people on forums, blogs, Facebook, etc., because they share the following qualities:
1. There are no olfactory (smell), (often no) audio, and no tactile components to this individual, thus negating all senses save sight (and at times hearing, which is also provided for by video games).
2. The individual is defined by a digital image (often thumb-nailed, to boot) and an interested party will still only find more images and some descriptive text which could easily be applied to a fictional persona (and all-too-often is!).
3. The communication is distant, and very rarely is there any possible consequence toward behaving to this digital representation the way one would to an NPC in any of the crude video games one might encounter.
Thus, as video games are a way to relieve stress and vent aggression, the seemingly-harmless environment of the internet - which uses the same medium as many video games - is not sufficiently far removed from them to fully prevent users from thinking (and feeling) in the same detached, unchecked terms.
The Tyrell Corporation in Philip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?/Blade Runner boasted that its androids (human replicant robots, not phones) strived to be "more real than real". However, with online communication, technology has also taken the far-easier approach of dehumanizing humanity even as it attempts to make more humanlike artifices.
There you go. Do I get to be "The Thoughtful One" yet?
PearlieMae
09-24-2014, 03:05 PM
Michelle, did you never have a ball to play with as a child?
;)
MermaidMichelle
09-24-2014, 03:29 PM
Yes, and this offers a further case-in-point:
When I was in the second grade in ~November of 1986, I was asked by a 'fellow' boy classmate how many balls I possessed. Thinking about the singular, seldom-used rubber ball residing somewhere in my basement, I answered honestly. This caused the six-year-old boy much mirth, for his perception of "having balls" was entirely different from mine own and he refused to change it, regardless of the barrier to communication it caused!
....I admit, I was far more fond of books than balls as a child, but I was also quite enamoured with fins! :mermaid kiss:

regardless of what anyone thinks of her top, it's not cool to bash her all over the forum (until the thread was locked) and now all over FB. he's also really stretching the truth. Pearl wore inserts inside that bra to be sure nothing showed. The top made me a bit uncomfortable only because it really stuck out and I wondered what parents would think. but then I just thought, well, they're only boobs. and pearl is happy. And they aren't hurting anyone. So even if the top wasn't my personal taste that 100% does not give me the right to bash her all over the place and call her a porn star. Also it wasn't billed as a family event. it was billed as a convention with separate events for kids.

it was a bromine pool and there are like 5 pools there lol of course you can smell it. The main deep pool was a fitness pool for swim races, you cant race in wading warm water. and they did increase the heat for us. he was invited multiple times to the shallow warmer pools but because kids were in them he didnt wanna go in them. I personally invited him to one. his response was he didnt want kids crawling all over him. And literally no one was running around with pasties so is he still talking about pearl in her bra??? He's just making things up now.
Someone's dad at merfest told me (when I did karaoke) that I looked like Jessica rabbit. Mind you, I was wearing an inch deep padded push up bra hahaha. but what does that say about me? ;)

If youre on my raina mer FB you can see loads of him harassing and trashing people. I sent it all to Mal on here suggesting it was more than enough evidence to ban him from mernetwork since one of the rules also says other online behaviour can be taken into account. He was banned from the NCmerfest groups, and there's a lot of talk of not allowing him to future events.
I've caught him lying now so much.
What is sad is I physically met this guy along with several others and invited him to participate after he expressed feeling left out. Even though his post made me mad I tried to be the bigger person and he just kept switching his issue in his head and being rude and awful to people. There really isnt any truth to his complaints. No one was rude to him. no one snubbed him. He wanted undivided attention and couldnt get it. A lot of people wanted my attention and I couldnt give it and no one is on here bashing me you know? more Lilium ended up in a car with me cursing my head off when the put the chemical stuff on my hand lol.
I had expectations for merfest too that weren't met but had nothing to do with anything anyone could of done a darn thing about. twice I has to phsyically reset myself I was so upset. (once, when I injured my hand, and the second time when I started getting ill during everything) A bunch of stupid dumb things happened to me and I could of easily just decided it all sucked and been mad. But I knew this was my chance to be with all the mers and who knew when I would again? So i took some meds, had a bath, ate some food, and put on my push up bra and went to town having fun lol. I was seriously bummed I didnt get a better shot with hannah and twig in my tail. Like actually kind of heart broken- cuz again how am I gonna do that again? BUT I can't sit here and be mad at them and call them names because logistically it didn't work out. It just didnt happen, and how I deal with it is up to me.

Raina I'm sorry that me and Sean could only laugh our asses off for the first minute of the stream of cussing btw :P love you really! <3 lol
and yeah I mean, I'm honestly not the best at social situations at the best of times, I can very easily end up being the one sat on my own but I went out of my way to say hi to people and others did the same, I may have emotionally clung to the people I knew already (much love to my roomies for putting up with me :P) but at no point did I feel like people were unfriendly or rude, in fact it was one of the most inclusive and welcoming environments I've been in. Yes I ended up isolated at times because I had to miss out due to being sick and not having my tail finished til the sunday. But mermaids kick ass and with the help of others I got my tail done enough to swim on the sunday. I flew from the UK and spent every penny I had (and more) to get there.... and I don't regret a penny of it. Yes I wish I'd had my tail ready before I flew, but flu and work got in the way. Yes I wish I hadn't missed out on a bunch of stuff, but like I said to my roommates I think on the friday night while working on my tail - they were the best thing about merfest, the friends I made and the memories I now have are priceless.

I saw him trying to get into his tail, sitting on the bleachers (did I post this before? Deja vu!), and told him he would probably do better to sit by the water, otherwise he was going to have to buttwalk across the deck and over the underwater camera/monitor wires and power cables. We chatted briefly and he seemed perfectly nice to me. I went on to the other side of the pool to wrestle with my rubber fish suit.
Then he goes on to being such a shit!?! WTF, dude?
I love how on his facebook he's got this video of wild boar or something running along the beach with the line "Oh lawd!!!!! I saw these at MerFest 2015!!!!!" Which is rude and so hypocritical given that he isn't sporting a 6 pack himself.

I am so annoyed by so many things Im gonna make a mega post.
ok so entitlement in the mer community drives me bonkers. I am so thankful we have so many giving mermaids though- many have demonstrated this recently by helping with Iona's fundraiser, and my little sick mermaid. But when some mers see stuff like this happen they come out of the wood work to ask for ridiculous stuff... what gets me is when the community as a whole has already told them no, we arent just giving you 1000s of dollars please work hard like the rest of us and maybe some good things will happen to you. Like I am seeing specific people who have already had backlash from the community keep doing it and then get mad when their crowdfunding fails... and blame the community lol.
Like, how many gofundmes did a watch pop up while we did ours lol. And the amount of mers who message me for the sole sake of asking me to donate to them after never showing any kind initiative in the community, supporting anyone, or liking facebook etc... it blows my mind.
Crowdfunding can be a part of your business but it shouldn't be the WHOLE part. It just never works that way,
Also people getting on my nerves becoming territorial around locations. Like especially for mers who dont even live in the area they've laid claim to, and then getting mad when a mer pops up who actually lives there using the name of the place. lol It's like me calling myself the desert mermaid... and getting mad when an actual mermaid who actually lives in the desert uses that in their name.
Finally, people in the community making up BS "facts" to try and gain some sort of credit or I don't know, just troll and start drama? No, I've been around forever. You did not start X you were not the first to do Y please stop making crap up -_-
What else can I rant about, let's see...
Mer's pretending to care about causes to make themselves look good and never actually doing a damn thing for that cause. No women's rights and environmental issues aren't just things you can throw around to get a bit of news paper action. Please actually go help these causes.
I think it's 100% ok to be a religious mer but when you start posting actual hate on your page and try to justify it with your religion, I am unfollowing your @SS
People continuing to defend the heck out of thieving tail makers and lying about their own experiences with said tail makers. Do you know how many people will fight tooth and nail on here but then tell me in private what a horrible time they had? Like don't tell me that unless you understand I will say/do something. Otherwise keep it to yourself.
ART THIEVES/PHOTO THIEVES *throws fireball at them*

That's I hope something I could never be accused of. I've always tried my best to walk the walk as well as talk the talk when it comes to doing my part for environmental issues and other causes. In fact, over the past year or two, I've actually focused less on trying to convert others to my beliefs and more on improving my own lifestyle

Others have tried. They came to me because they don't want to be harassed for thier opinions. You were only banned because you were messageing me constantly with pragraphs as you call it. You were asked by several people to chill on the posts. Not just in pod of the south but other groups too. . You were only going to be banned 5days so you could chill out. You seem to think people are offended and you post harshly alot under emotional distress then later retract your words. Yes this is the "bitch it out thread" but perhaps you should get in the habit of writing things out on the computer, saving it, then go over it later when you're not in such an emotional state. @dylan, now you're just being outright insulting to everyone who has tried to help you. People in the community have tried talking you, tried to understand where you're coming from and did their best to give you helpful advice. Now you're saying joining the community and asking for support was a mistake? My personal feelings on this, just me, given all I've read. If you feel that way, maybe it is best if you take some time away from the community to get your emotions in check. Do what you need to do, to get yourself in a better headspace so to speak. I understand that he's upset, myself and others tried several times to get him to calm down and take a step back from everything. Mostly because we saw he was getting upset, what to us was something rather silly. This is all over people in the pod trying to meetup. I'm not saying he doesn't have a right to be upset at all, I feel like everything myself and others tried to say to him went completely over his head. Like he took one word and ran with it, without comprehending everything else. Not in any way shape or form was the pod or community turning against him. Everyone was trying to help him.

Here's the issue, when you say word like chill out and other stuff, you are actually triggering a flare up with BiPolar. I am so sorry about this, and I think it has a lot to do with how new I am to social media. Nerine was not wrong, and I wasn't right. I probably did need a break from social media, but blocking me and telling me to chill out isn't the way to calm me down. I now know that I was in a BiPolar rant. Usually in person, I am screaming inside my head to stop my mouth from moving, but I simply can't stop saying hurtful things. Now that I vented everything, i am thinking much more clearly. There is a fundamental lack in people's understanding of how to talk me down. Telling me to stop, shut up, or chill out will always do the opposite of what you want. This may seem like an easy thing for you to not get stuck doing, but It's virtually impossible for me to stop on my own. I haven't figured out sure fire way for someone to stop me, but it usually involves a random act of kindness when someone is successful. This doesn't excuse me by any means, and I didn't know what I was doing and couldn't stop. I want people on facebook to give me their honest opinions of me because I will be able to tell if they can socialize with me or not without as many issues. I will work tirelessly to bring this under control. I just want you to understand what i just realized after I vented.

Dylan, none of us are privy to your personal life and issues unless you tell us. How was anyone supposed to know that telling you to chill or calm down would trigger you? I'll just reiterate what I said to you before, write out what you're going to say, save it on the computer than come back to it. Once you feel calmer, in a better head space after you've taken some time, go over it, edit it if need be and then post it if you feel it still needs to be said.

Oh boy can I relate, Dylan! I'm sure some old-timers on this forum can attest that I once had very similar issues on here. I have an Autism Spectrum Disorder, and social skills and boundaries were very much a challenge for me. Naturally when I had a meltdown people got very irritated and frustrated and didn't always handle it in the best possible way. Many people don't have much experience with mental issues, and as such even those with good intentions sometimes just make it worse. There really aren't any easy answers there, but I will say that expecting someone with mental issues to always react like a so-called "normal/neurotypical" person doesn't work. The best advice I think I can give is when dealing with someone with mental and emotional issues like this, try to reach out to them with unconditional compassion, kindness, and respect, as opposed to giving them "tough love" advice.

It's a good place to start. Trust me, I've tried and tried to figure this out. I've lived with this disorder since I was diagnosed in 1st grade. I've asked myself almost every single question you all can ask and I still get few answers. I really wish I could give you more advice, but I'm not sure I know what will stop me when it I start acting up. The social media is still a very new thing for me. I will do everything in my power figure out a way to manage it online, but for now, I need to friend people that are willing to work with me. Nerine told me that she is very busy, and I understand that she can't help me. I wish I could apologize to her because I was very unfair to her. I just need some good friends that are willing to take the time to teach me to socialize better. I want to learn, and I need help to learn. Nerine was right. I need to learn how to use social media right before I join any groups. I'm so sorry *tears rolling down cheeks* I really want you to forgive me if you can even though I don't deserve it.

No one wants to trigger you Dylan, that's why I said that. I want to know, so that I don't cause you any stress, we're all here to help you. I think you're being to harsh on yourself, I can't speak for Nerine but I do believe she'd be willing to forgive you and let bygones be bygones. You do need to be more careful in future about how far you go with your venting. A good rule of thumb, is to keep it in private messages, or in a journal. There's no reason to have things blow out of proportion like this again.

I will do my best. I don't know if I will join any groups in the near future, and that will probably be because of different things than when I was ranting. I just lost so much energy today letting it all out. I'll try to private message stuff from here on if I have any problems, but I won't post until I think things through more clearly. I think a good sign that I'm struggling will be if I keep posting and deleting posts over and over again like I was doing. If I feel like I have to keep apologizing, but I continue to say bad things. I guess that's a very good sign that I'm struggling.

Dylan, do you already have a therapist? If not, I would really suggest looking for one, and making sure they are someone you can speak openly and honestly with.

I don't have a therapist even though that might help. I just need to learn to manage myself better. I'm getting there at least.

Please seriously consider finding one. Helping people manage their mental health problems is their job and exactly what they are trained to do. I really can't stress enough how much a good therapist can do. And that is really all I can say because I myself am not in place where I can be responsible for the troubles of others.

@Dylan, something interesting I just read that might be of interest to you. "“It’s important to remember that when you’re depressed you have to nurse yourself and be extra gentile towards yourself. Just like an athlete wouldn’t break an ankle then force themselves to run on that ankle. They rest as it heals and do not think “I am a failed athelete” they think, “right now something isn’t working so i’ll take care of myself until it does.“ Just like a broken bone, depression can change the way your daily life plays out, and pushing yourself too hard and getting frustrated when you don’t feel better is just like trying to run on that broken ankle and getting frustrated when it doesn’t heal." Having dealt with depression and strong emotions at times, it's something to remember. Be easy on yourself, when you get frustrated with something take a step back.

I really hate to be this person, and this is not directed at anyone, it's just something I feel like I've noticed in this community, but, am I the only one who FEELS or has noticed that there are other Mers who think they're better than others? Like they're too good to talk to you?
For instance, I have a fabric tail, and I feel like higher up mers who are more advanced and have big expensive tails, don't even want to give me the time of day when it comes to trying to talk to them.
Who knows. Maybe this is just my own insecurity. But this really bothers me.
Maybe I'm just selfish and insecure. Who knows. :gah::shame::sad eyes:

@mermaidbrynley I should be asleep but I saw your post... even I feel that way at times... I have a silicone tail but feel sometimes segregated due to my size....you know what I do with those people? .. I don't waste my time.. you should do the same with those people who think what your tail is made of...
I love my tail.. but some times I'm envious at the ease mers with fabric and neoprene tails get around with theirs ;)

I've felt the same way since I joined. That's why I don't bother looking at certain threads anymore because they give me such tail envy!! I'm not feeling the love for us, fabric tail wearers. I made one or two tail making threads and even my homemade fish suit, only got couple of looks and comments. I just don't bother posting such things anymore except in my own album, as I know I'm not making a dint in this big fish world. Better to do my own thing, in my own little corner so as to not get in the way of other more progressed merfolk.

*Hugs Brynley* Believe me, I know how you feel. I too have felt insecure about my tail in the past. I felt jealous of the "oohing and ahing" and attention that expensive realistic tails, as well as the swimming ability of the most notable professional mers, get, but I for the most part have grown past that, as I learned that comparing yourself to others is very rarely a healthy thing. It's better to focus on being the best YOU you can be instead of trying to always "keep up with the Joneses". I also recommend you check out a thread I started a couple years ago that's continued to be very popular called the "Fabric Tail Appreciation Thread" where mers with inexpensive fabric tails can share their pics. I know it sure made me feel better to see I wasn't the only one without a high-end realistic tail.
Forums can feel a bit clique-y, so I emphasize that it can be tough when you're a newbie trying to establish yourself in the community. I'm sorry if you feel us longtime members haven't been very welcoming to you. Now, are there elitist jerks in the mer-community? Yes, honestly, there is one very high-profile professional mermaid that immediately comes to mind, although she is not active on here at all...

Like Nerine felt segregated due to her size, I always felt segregated due to my inability to swim, although luckily my best friend loves mermaids as much as I do and can't swim either. Apparently Caribbean Pearl, the Pirate Mermaid can't swim either and she's at least moderately famous on the mermaiding circuit, appearing at all the major events. Chances are just about everyone on this forum has had moments where they felt ignored or inferior, it's human nature to compare yourself to others

I am not comparing myself to other mers. I do love my fabric tails and others as well. I'm just not seeing the support for fabric tail wearers. I'm not talking about elites and such. Its just a general feeling I have had since I joined. I do enjoy the discussions about various topics. I understand the urge that some people have, the need to have a silicone just to feel that little bit "special" and to have one as part of their business. But like MermaidBrynley said, I don't like being ignored either.

Honestly I get what you guys are saying, though mine is more a personal thing. I often don't reach out to more... 'well known mers', let's say, privately even if I really want to just talk to them and get to know them better because I feel inadequate, rather than anything they have done. That being said, I've never felt brushed off by anyone in the community when I have reached out.

I love my tail too! I just feel like I am just not taken very seriously when more advanced see I don't have a big fancy one. And that is kind of annoying. I don't know, like I said, probably just my own insecurity. You guys have been a big help. Thank you for all the support :mermaid kiss:

That's why I started the Fabric Tail Appreciation Thread a while back ;). At the time I started it, I think Raina had just gotten her first gorgeous tail from Merbellas and was getting a lot of attention for it, where people who got new fabric tails got much less attention. I wanted to have a safe space for people with fabric tails to feel comfortable and supported. I also remember posting early in that thread about that in spite silicone tails looking obviously more realistic, there are certain benefits that fabric tails have over silicone or latex. Such as they're MUCH more comfortable and lightweight out of the water, which makes them more practical for dry shoots, where most silicone tails are heavy and uncomfortable when dry. They're also low-maintenance, where some silicone tails need repainting and such.

Every tail is unique! One other thing that made me feel better about my tail is when my BFF Lisa tried it on. Lisa doesn't have a tail at all, unless you count those Ariel-tail print costume leggings. She acted so genuinely thankful to try on my cheap tail that it made me appreciate it more

Aw Jaffa, you should still post your stuff. Try not to worry about how much attention they do or don't get. Not everyone is super active on the forums, I know people see things, but maybe feel like they have nothing to contribute to the post. It is a good idea to focus on just doing your own thing and enjoying what you do. It's easy to get caught up in the whole popularity thing.

yea, agreed.
There is an overwhelming interest for silicone tails and just a small niche for fabric tails.
Likewise, mers with silicone tails get the most attention.
I don't mind that though, it's just as it is.
I like all tails that are pretty.
I don't find any material superior per se- I've seen fabric tails I liked better (and found just as realistic looking) as some silicone tails.
I realize I'm a small minority, but that doesn't impact my joy in tails ands mermaiding one bit.
So what if most people have a different taste than I do. It goes for most other things as well ;)

I'll echo what others have said. There are lots of fabric and neoprene and sequined tails out there, and they can be as gorgeous and realistic as silicone. Each material has its advantages and disadvantages. Mers who peform professionally in the water a lot tend to like silicone for its particular advantages. Those folks usually use a lot of high quality photography in their work, so we see a lot of lovely photos of silicone tails. But that doesn't mean that fabric and neoprene tails are looked down upon. In my experience here, the mers with the most fabulous silicone tails are usually extremely supportive and complimentary to mers with non-silicone tails. I think we all genuinely admire any beautifully designed, well crafted tail and appreciate the diversity of styles and materials that our creative MerNetwork members devise. There may be more posts on the forum about silicone tails, but that's partly because folks have to wait so long to get one, and it's very natural to for them to share their anticipation, worries, and excitement when it finally arrives.
It's also a mistake for one to base one's self worth on responses from an internet forum. Sure, we all like to be admired. But creativity, imagination, and accomplishment can nurture the spirit and bring immense satisfaction whether anyone else notices or not. It's the artistic process and how you use the end product in the real world that matter most.

Galene, you are so eloquent! Thank you for saying what I wish I could have expressed!
I certainly hope I haven't made anyone feel that way! I love looking at the fabric tails, and offer help when I can. I know I can be blunt, but I'm blunt to everyone!
I started making silicone tails basically because I'm an artist mermaid at heart, but even moreso, I'm a problem solver, and silicone tails offer a unique set of challenges.
My very first tail, in 1983, was made of swim suit material, chiffon and coat hangers in the fluke! I wish I still had it.
I hope I'm not one that makes you feel that way.
(And honestly, I want a sequin tail so much it hurts!)

Dang it I had a whole post but my phone just deleted it. :(
Main point: more people read posts than actually respond, but that doesn't mean they're ignoring you. (Just look at the "views" to see that.) Being new and finding your niche in a forum is a sucky, uncomfortable feeling (I still feel it too). Just keep interacting and posting and you'll find your place.
Oh, and woohoo for versatile fabric tails! Yeah, there's a lot of excitement when someone gets a silicone tail, but remember what that represents-- often years of scrimping and saving, months of effort and overcoming setbacks if they're making their own, months on a waitlist if not. Let's be honest here: a silicone tail is a luxury item. So of course theyll get lots of attention, where a mer getting a Fin Fun tail won't get as much. That doesn't mean we don't recognize the excitement of any mer getting a new beautiful tail! (I'm a huge fan of Fin Fun, they do great work!) And I'd say the fabric tail making threads get nearly as much attention and appreciation as the silicone and sequin tail threads. I guess I'm saying don't mistake total post count for forum approval/disapproval?
ETA: yeah I think Galene and Pearlie said it better... ;)
