Finfolk Productions: anyone ordered a tail from them? I just did!

They've been doing the individual scales for a while. The first tail that had it was their first Betta tail (the tail Abby wore in their first Hawaii photoshoot right after their Kickstarter finished). I got to see it in person August 2013 (so almost two years ago) when I went to Minnesota. I don't know when Pearlie started doing her individual scales, but I'm pretty sure I at least remember seeing the Finfolk one first, though I think they appeared around the same time (correct me if I'm wrong, Pearlie). But yeah, I remember being pretty amazed by the Betta tail since I'd seen pictures of it but didn't realize it had individual scales until they showed me the tail in person, and thought it was really cool cuz I hadn't seen anyone else do that before.

I had their first customer ordered individual scaled tail. Cyanea's seen it in person as well. It's really thick compared to the regular tails and if you have fins, it's harder to roll down. But to me, it seems a bit more durable and in water, you really don't notice any difference. Except that it has kept me warmer :D

Yeah, Odette said she's been doing individual scales for a long time, but didn't disclose it. I was working on my first pretty much concurrently with Finfolk. They finished theirs way before I did. Odette got annoyed when people started calling it the Pearlie Method, then she disappeared.

Finfolk's individual scale tails, and Odette's tails don't fasten the scales down completely, where mine are sealed completely.

I'm going to need to drastically switch gears with the future of my dream tail, and it looks like Finfolk might be off the table :crying:

I feel like that could potentially end up being a lot more work than it's worth IMO. Put it together and paint it, only to have to take it apart, trim it down/add more onto it and then repaint it once it's sold... It would be a lot easier to just sell pre-designs in that case.

In person.
With them tugging and helping.

That being said, the ankle dorsal (fluke dorsal?) Is confusing the heck out of me right now. Will it not get stressed while putting the tail?

Also, that tail is stunning and I love the way the hip fins wrap around.

I'm happy for you that you get your beautiful tails soon! And Riiarin, I love your moon colors, that tail will be amazing!!!
I have got a relatively new tail from FF too (the golden one). But the pleasure was short.

Airport mistreatment of my suitcase resulted in a complete break of my monofin after my tail's journey back from it's first photoshooting.
I need to replace the monofin soon (to hopefully get some refund of my baggage ensurance) and since I already have made two silicone tails myself I think I can do it. I have to buy it fast to send them the invoice of my new competitor monofin.
Here is where I would need your advice (the FF girls are currently on a journey and not available atm): Those of you who have competitors in their FF tails, do you perhaps know what blade stiffness the twins use for their tails, soft, moderate or stiff?
My tail swam well before the monofin broke so I want to buy the same type again.
Could you please give me some advice?

SeaNymph, that sucks!! They're definitely paying you for the necessary repairs, right??
The Finis Competitor monofin only comes in one stiffness. If you want the exact same fin then all you have to do is order the Competitor, but you'll have to order it from the States. I think you might be thinking of one of the Waterway monofins, which is very similar to the Competitor monofin but comes in three different stiffnesses. I don't know which one is most similar to the Competitor, but it seems to me that you should just choose whichever stiffness appeals to you the most, and if you're not sure, choose Medium. Can anyone else chime in on that?

As far as I'm aware they only come in one stiffness too. I'm actually looking at replacing my monofin in my tail soon as mine is damaged so I will be interested it how it all goes. Sorry to hear that happened to you! When I travel I sandwich my fin between ply board so that it can't bend at all to prevent snapping. It makes it heavier but it gives me more peace of mind.

I do think my fin in my tail is a size up from my actually size too. That little titbit might help. They colour code the sizes with the rubber on the foot straps. So check what colour your footstraps are and order the size that is that colour!

Thank you very much for your advice, Theobromine and Jessica Pearl. I know my competitor size and until now I always thought that there is the same stiffness grade in all competitors. But I have seen some websites where they talk about three different blade types explicitely in the finis competitor: soft, moderate and stiff. That just made me feel unsure...

Aww, thank you everyone! For those asking for a swim video, I can't seem to find my underwater camera at the moment. I will be swimming with Cyanea soon (1 more week!) and she has a go pro. As silly as it may sound, I wrote one for them yesterday and that was actually my first time. Up to now, we always communicated through Facebook but since it's not really working for the last three months, I'm trying a new way to reach to them.

The girls came back recently to the big island so they should be back on track with their production schedule and the emails so hopefully I should get something soon but I was still wondering about everyone's experience :)

Actually when I looked Riiarin slip into this goddess-tail I was like :jawdrop:, it looked so effortless! Took like under a minute.
And when she swam it was one second and she was like at the other end of the lake... :D Like absolutely super-cool, I knew Finfolk tails were beautiful but they are just so totally functional too that it blew my mind.

Thanks for the comparison, Yulia! I'm glad they kept it so close to the original. In my opinion the subtle changes to the mold are perfect. Having the detailed fin edges between all the rays is great. And the scales broader at the feet, then not extend quite so far down is just... perfect. They do gorgeous work, I've loved reading this entire thread since I've joined!! =)

I hope you will get a reply soon. Despite having ordered two tails, I got zero communication from them since mid-September when I sent an email about a couple of things. I know they are swamped with their current orders but still.. I'm just as frustrated as you :(

As much as I hate to say it, I'm in the same boat. I ordered a top with my tail and only received my tail. I got photo updates of my top at the same time as my tail, but they said that my top hadn't completely dried, so they only sent my tail. It's been a couple of months since my tail arrived and still no top. They have told me a number of times that it is ready and that they would "ship it that weekend" but nothing has arrived.

Edit: I did see a post on instagram by a mermaid who received their most recent green tail and she seems to have gotten her top with it.

I used the design center on their website to submit my order and got an automatic confirmation email but my payment still says pending on my credit card account and I haven't heard anything since. Maybe they're not taking orders? Does anyone know for sure?

Edit: I just checked and it's actually no longer pending, so my payment went through.

Sorry to hear that Lorelei, its really frustrating isnt it?! when i ordered my tail from them the communication was great and I got my tail in no time so Im surprised that this is happening now. my boyfriend is the one who ordered it from them and they dont communicate with him at all, all of it has been done through me which killed the surprise of a christmas present lol! He ended up getting annoyed and asking them for proof that it was being made at which point we got a photo of a gold top semi painted...

Like I totally understand and appreciate how busy they are but its been nearly a year since it was ordered and I am tired of being told over and over again that its going to be sent and its not

I just saw someone post on Instagram that they just got their tail after almost two years so hopefully yours will come soon. Theirs was a custom sculpt which I believe I remember reading that you ordered as well.

Personally, I'd ask for their advice on that😊 when they're given full control and creativity on their tails they always end up AMAZING! I mean, they always end up amazing, but their personal designs are just...wow

I was thinking of doing that. Originally I was thinking I wanted to go with green but recently I've been thinking blue. But other than that I don't know how I want it to look so I was thinking of leaving it up to them.

They are still taking custom orders but just a limited amount. The girls are extremely slammed so please be patient with them. They are still in the process of selecting someone that can assist in managing their emails and messages. Basecamp has helped immensely and they are looking to move most of their current clients to that server as they proceed on your tail production. They have been in the studio non stop so I was glad we could take them out to enjoy the sun and surf. Please keep in mind that while they are artists, they are also humans. They have lives outside of the studio so sometimes things happen. They don't like to have their personal lives plastered all over their Finfolk social media. So they will get information to you as soon as they can.

I would prefer the twins contacted me directly either with a tracking number for my top, or to admit that they bit off more than they could chew and are playing catch up. I'm quite tired of being told to be patient, "keep my chin up", and wait for them to send me more information. I get that they're human. So am I. It's not really working as an excuse for me anymore.

I'm glad you saw my top, but I'm rather frustrated that it still has not been constructed. I've had a photo of it for months now and was under the impression that it simply needed to be shipped out.

To sum, good for you getting to spend time with them and for receiving all of your pieces. But please, don't attempt to make excuses for them and expect everyone to be happy with that.

I think you have every right to be upset. If something still "needs to be constructed," then it certainly isn't "done," and definitely not ready to be shipped out. And if you were told it was ready, that's just not cool. I'd be upset too, human or not.

I agree with the above. Yes, the girls are only human and they of course deserve to have a life outside of work, but people get frustrated when they don't hear anything about their order for months after the expected completion date. No one should have to pretend they're not frustrated with this. I know Abby and Bryn are lovely and I'm sure they don't mean to cause frustration to their clients, but I keep feeling like they may have bitten off more than they can chew and need to learn how to balance work and communication, because communication is very important in this type of business (I feel that way about Merbellas, too). I don't think it's too much to ask to be kept up to date with an order that you've paid a ton of money for, and most people on here are extremely polite and patient about it.

Gasp! Someone mentioned they waited 20 months?! I placed an order in September 2015 and so far I've gotten an email that they received my deposit and that they will contact me about the Basecamp set up and production month. I know they are very busy and I hope they can tackle what they take on. I just hope I don't have to wait more than what they said. (9-12 months).
I keep telling myself it'll all be worth it to calm my anxiety! They work is truly magical!!!
