Finfolk Productions: anyone ordered a tail from them? I just did!

Everyone really seems to love the Competitor, but I did without it and do not regret it for a second. I don't feel like I lost or sacrificed speed at all - it's lighter above and below water annnnd I can do tricks much easier! I'd tried out another FF Tail with the competitor prior to mine and found that mine (without it) is MUCH easier to maneuver and just as fast. PLUS - SO MUCH easier to transport!!! Really it seems the competitor would be better if you plan to do a lot of big deep ocean swimming - for depth or distance. I def appreciate the option - but am so glad with my lil'guy - which still has quite a bit of heft and zoom itellyouwhat. ;)

Today, I got a message from the girls. They are gonna start on my tail soon and they are hoping to be shipping it within the next week. I'm excited and scared at the same time. It has been so long since I placed my order back in January so I look forward to get it :)

I have been holding back because I know that they are so busy but things seem to start to go really fast once they get to you so I'm afraid that they are going to start pouring before I am happy with what I want! I'm starting to obsess over the exact same thing Crystal! I do a lot of ocean swimming, so I'm hoping I have made the right decision with the Competitor! I've been thinking that it could have been a bit wiser to get the trainer since I want to to dry events too but I have definitely been seduced by the thought of the extra propulsion.

I'm still gonna take a competitor because I don't like seeing the outlines of the monofin. It reminds me too much of the mertailor's bad tails. As much as flopiness sounds good, I have seen that it's actually quite floppy with the competitor too. Yes, it's stiff and heavy but as a guy, it's nothing that I can't manage :)
Besides, we don't have big deep pools in France like in the US so I'm gonna do lots of ocean swimming to compensate ;)

I ordered a competitor in mine because I had a foil in my merbellas tail, and while I like the floppiness and ease of using it, I'd prefer the fluke to stand up straight for things like photoshoots, which my merbellas tail wasn't so good at with its foil. Also, I've always wanted a tail that could hang over my head and shade me from the sun on hot days :P

Some might appreciate the flopiness there but the foil/wave inside is a bit too obvious for my taste. I prefer stiffer flukes like Raina :)

I quote like the look of the foil - I don't think it's too obvious and it's certainly more realistic. If you're just going to be doing pool parties you don't need amazing propulsion, so if you wanna save a bit of extra cash then that would seem like the right choice! Honestly it's going to vary from person to person, you just need to figure out what'll work best for you because both monofins look just fine in the tails :)

I got some exciting news for you, guys! :yay:

My body piece and the fluke being done pouring, Abby came to talk to me yesterday on FB and she wanted to solidify color schemes and extra fins with me. So we discussed about my design, the colors I wanted and the fins I've chosen. To remind all of you, I'm having a competitor monofin, a dorsal, two sets of fins (at the pectoral and heels) and I asked for scale tipping for more depth and realism to my tail.
She told me that hopefully, she will begin painting it late tonight or tomorrow! I shall have lots of photo updates soon! :rotfl:

Ommmggg!! Amelia and I soooo almost went with the new scales but chickened out at the last minute because we wanted to see how they would look first. I really like them but think the wider scales might be a bit more flattering on my curves. I think our tails are being worked on at the exact same time Arion because we are at the same part of the process. They will be like brother and sister tails! Haha.

I'm wondering about the individual scales they showed a while ago but haven't gotten a reply back from them about the cost as an upgrade :(

Has anyone gotten any cost on that one?

How much harder do you think it would be to clean vs regular soft sponge wipe down and baking soda rinse off with a regular smooth silicone tail?

I'm pretty sure that the dragon scales will be a scale sheet just like all the other tails they make. It would be the same in cost and everything (I think) and you would clean it the same way.

I'm guessing they're still working out the kinks in the individual scales to make sure they have their method down pat, sort of thing, before they actually offer it as an upgrade (and figure out the cost of the upgrade). I don't think they've shown it on the official Finfolk page, but I know they're working on a new individually-scaled tail for one of their good friends. I saw it on one of their personal profiles, and while it didn't seem to be a big secret or anything, if Abby, Bryn, or Allie is reading this and doesn't want me to share this info, let me know and I'll take this comment down :)

That being said, I imagine that with the individual scales you'd have to be a little more careful with cleaning, since they're basically each a little flap of silicone that could trap sand/grit/water underneath. It seems to me that you'd have to just be a little more meticulous about cleaning it, and be careful not to tug too hard on the scales or anything. But I'm not the authority so I'd wait until they're officially offering that as an upgrade.

Yeah I was wondering about "what if I get sand or critters stuck underneath a flap...." I've been having mermaid dreams lately of worry LOL. I was pondering hanging it from a pull up rack on which I'll be buying soon for my new novelty item, and spraying water from the top but I wouldn't want to ruin the tiny scales with a strong spray...

My tail will officially cost twice as much as my car... and I have a mostly modern Acura :/ my boyfriend's being "too" supportive if that's a word or even a thing, so I think I'm gonna go all out with my mermaid dreams and go for broke on this venture of my life.

Arion and Jessica, I absolutely can't wait to see your tails! I'm so excited for both of you as well! Even though I don't know you and you don't know me personally, yet :o , this is so exciting to see more mermaids and mermen get their new tails after such a long yet short waiting period!

I always thought I was alone until I decided to internet past my bookmarks and funny pictures then I found out about this forum. Not very social, I am. Not much support in life, I've had. This is all so exciting to see other people excited about the same stuff!!!

So random, but I had a photo shoot for a book at a botanical garden past Monday right? I was a geisha ghost and where we were supposed to be shooting, a class of first graders were in session in the gardens taking a field trip. So instead, we walked around and they did rotations as we were shooting and all I heard were awes and frightened sounds and emotions lol. I tried to scare a photographer in a corner but of course, didn't realize I was walking on gravel so he heard and I gave myself away. However at the end of the shoot, my photographer told me "I bet when those kids get home, they won't tell their parents about how beautiful the gardens were on their field trip, but everyone one of them will be telling their parents about how they all saw a 'ghost queen' today on their field trip. They won't even remember the gardens. You may not have affected 1 person, but you changed the lives of 66 first graders and their teachers." - not verbatim but darn near. When he told me that, I felt overwhelmingly happy thinking about when the teachers came up to us and thanked us for "such a treat!" of merely seeing us shoot there.

I can't wait to feel that type of life touchingness? with young lives again with my future tail.Ever think about the future? What people in your lives will say about you (for the young mers without children yet like myself), "What does your mom or dad do?" - "My mom/dad('s) a MERMAID!" How awesome is that? For the mers with children: again, how cool is that?! :D Sorry long rant. Slightly excited and can't tell this stuff to most (not all) normal people. They judge too often in bad ways. I've gotten put down too many times telling people about this that I bottle and release when triggered by mermaid excitement.

I think I may have missed something...Finfolk is doing individual scales?

I can tell you from my own technique with building a mermaid tail with individual scales is that there is no flap. The scales are sealed down to each other with more silicone - like you would butter a piece of bread - and it becomes a single unit. Mine is built on a powermesh foundation and the rest of the tail is a solid silicone unit. You would clean it just like any other tail.

Now, if they ARE doing individual scales and leaving them so they will flap, it will compromise the structure of the tail and it could be very fragile.

I had assumed that people had been confused by the photo announcing something new in the works (it looked like individual scales, but could have been just a general hint at something that was being worked on and wasn't photograph able yet) and that that photo ended up refering to the new more pointed scales.

I got an update from the girls last night :


Hey Alex! So your whole tail is put together and its ready to be painted and all of your colors are mixed. Unfortunately, we dont have any pictures at the moment and we're out of the studio tonight and tomorrow because we're celebrating Allie's birthday. We'll be able to chat with you about last minute design notes today and tomorrow if you like, and then we'll be ready to paint it on sunday.
The plan is to have it shipped by Monday. :)

Sooo no progress pictures yet but I'm very excited! By Monday, my tail will be shipped!!! Wowza! :D

I'll definitely go check again and see if I can grab the mertailor one as well :) I'm going to be in Minnesota in a month so I thought about stopping by to meet them and give them my measurements personally, but I don't want to make it awkward or something for them or something. I'm visiting a best friend of mine and will only be in town for a week. I would love to visit, but I don't know how much time I can spare away from my friend (since we have so little time together and I haven't seen her in years, so there will be a lot of catching up to do and a lot of plans) and she's already a little sad I'll be going to Finfolk for one of the days. If I can swing it though, I would love to come for a swim depending on where everyone is! I'll be in Chanhassen much of the time except for the weekend portion of it when I'll be in Duluth. Yeah, I was kinda hoping they would have told me a few hundred at most but after I looked and looked and looked and saw... and I'm pretty sure they teased me with pictures too LOL, I caved. The extra money was supposed to have been for a nice camera, but my production time should be coming up here soon, hopefully, so I yeah..... and my boyfriend just bought his house so the excitement overwhelmed me when he said he'll make an area for my hobbies and obsessions... I've dreamt of going to Australia ever since I was little for some reason (I'm not sure why, I was just always drawn to it). My boyfriend found this beyond amazing gaming school for him in Sydney and I've discovered there's quite a few film job opportunities for me there. Everything is kind of falling into place for it, so in a year and a half we'll be moving to Sydney hopefully if everything goes well. Sadly, I'm already aware that's on the other side of Australia away from Perth, but I would love to try and see if I can manage a few visits. :) I will be trying to visit my friend in Adelaide often too.
I strangely don't mind my tail being pushed back just because I still have to save my last $1,000 and I'm going back home to Cali for a month so I'll be away from my job which means no money for this upcoming month :/ Thank Q for the update :)

I love the fact that Finfolk Productions is a team of women and not just an individual. Don't get me wrong, but with their awesomeness level, I can imagine the stress level as well in creating the tails. With 4 girls though, I'd like to think it's divided and they each don't have an overwhelming amount of pressure on their shoulders as opposed to if it was just 1 person making the tails.
I feel sometimes the world needs 2 or more of the same person because 1 would just not be enough awesome for the world... TWINS!

I can hardly wait for my tail. My team of make up artists and photographers are as excited as I am with it being June soon. Ah such a huge month though. New life, new house, new location, new beginnings... Yes, I've pulled together a team for my future tail already.

I know on their FAQ they say 24-48 hours, and I just sent them a facebook message today but I have heard a lot about tail makers taking a long time to respond (because they are always so busy) so I am a bit worried. Do they only take messages from their facebook or am I suppose to email them? (I saw them post their email on the thread once, but I don't know if that was meant for anyone interested in a tail or someone particular...I am just paranoid and do not wish to bother them.)

Just wait for a reply :) in February, it took me about a week to get a reply and it's been about a week since my last message from them about my current order that's supposed to be coming up soon. They're really popular so it may take a while. I'm not even half way where they are on my Facebook page and I have a ton of messages I haven't gotten back to due to just the volume of messages.
It's worth the wait :o

They got back to me last night. They put a post up a while back saying that customers with tails in production have top priority because they are soooooo busy atm. I think they barely ever get days off. But they do get back to you within a week. Which is great! And yes through Facebook.

They seem to be crazy busy! At least from what I can tell they have a team of folks who help them out, so they don't have to do it all themselves.
Also summer is always tends to be VERY frustrating for tailmakers, becuase they get a serious influx of people wanting tails. And with a lot of people, they just found out about tails or that tailmaker in particular, and everyone wants to order a tail FOR summer DURING summer- and people don't realize that is NOT gonna happen with silicone tails. X_x

(ah! oh my, uh, I dunno why I thought %50 of 2500 was 1500 but uh, I JUST realized it's NOT, and funds are actually much closer in my favor then I thought.

so, uh, that being said, since it looks like I can now afford it (whenever they have room for the order that is) does anyone have opinions of which monofin is better? This will be my first and I am wondering if settling for the trainer would be fine or if I should upgrade for the competitor, any thoughts?

Because if I settle for a trainer then I can order the tail sooner, but if I get the competitor I will be waiting a LITTLE bit longer, but still not as long as I had originally thought.)

There has actually been a lot of discussion about the different fins in this post. I think the conclusion was that if you do a lot of ocean swimming the competitor is great. But if you want to do more land stuff or prefer a more flexible look in the water then the lighter and smaller trainer is better.

I just got my first update picture! The first coat isn't even finished yet but they were so excited the had to send it to me! The center color will be more of a vibrant mint color, and the greens are going to be a deep emerald. The colors are/will be inspired by a peacock with a pop of mint! Because DHL is fucking with me :mad:

At first, it was supposed to be delivered yesterday but it was in fact today. And today, they just fucked the delivery... :doh:

And yet, they had everything !!!
My adress, the door code, the floor where I live and my phone number. I stayed in my place from 7 am to 15:15 pm and the courier didn't try to contact me at all !!!
I called the customer service twice and they didn't manage to contact the courier. At the end, I was mad and told them that I can't trust their delivery service anymore.

So now, I'm gonna go outside and get it at the facility by myself. I hope I can manage to come home with a big box all by myself.

thats like a few weeks ago, I was 50 minutes early for a flight (which apparently is considered "late check in"?) and so my suitcase (tagged 2 of 2 luggage) made it on the plane, but my monofin didn't. It was the ONLY thing of everyone that didn't. Because that makes sense? But they wouldn't pay shipping to my house because it's not their fault. Good Lord people are stupid.

Good luck getting your tail, it'll be worth the headache!!! (:

Unfortunately, that's not the case. While I'm indeed capable of doing that, I swear I'm not making that up :(
I'm currently in a train station, waiting for the train, so I can get to the facility which is in the border of Paris. And it's gonna take longer than expected because the employees are on strike.

I'm really disappointed. What could have been a beautiful day is actually taking a bad turn. What a waste of time...

I'm really excited! Now that I have my tail with me (still sealed in a box though), I can finally sleep peacefully.

Got these updates over a week ago. Lots more to do but it is exactly the right colour now (was a bit blue before). Getting more spots and hip and belly fins.

Random question, how does finfolk keep their painting tables so clean? Whenever I see mertailor or merbellas tables, they're covered in layers of paint, but Finfolk always has a sparkling white table for their tails to be painted on. Are they wizards? :P

No it won't have spots haha! It's going to have more of an emerald green with it and some turquoise as well :) that is funny though!
