So Finfolk started a new tail and while I doubt it's mine since I paid a little while ago (and damn that would be fast!), I can't help but get a little excited because of the beginning similarities. Though mine has more purple and lavender in the fluke, but who knows what's going to be layered over it. To whosever tail it ends up being, it's looking great already!

My tail was inspired by the lavender tang (minus their yellow bits) and the gem moonstone. I have the Loreena fluke for the template, but once I saw their Calypso I requested if it could be changed to that. *^*

Woah, your design is soooo pretty, the blues and purples are going to look great on a finfolk tail.

I just emailed finfolk about getting my tail in the order line. Here is my design it is based off the Disney Cheshire Cat!!! I am going to add silver scale tips

All these designs are GOREGOUS! :D
Makes me excited for my own tail, but I'm honestly clueless about when it's coming now. :( I was told the next batch right after the new fluke (since I was technically supposed to be a July tail but decided to wait to see the fluke, so we pushed it back). I asked again about timing because I know they are moving in October and was told most likely after the move. I thought they weren't working on anymore tails until after the move? Now this new one (which is soo beautiful by the way) is coming along and I'm just confused. :/
I have no idea when my tail will be, guess I'll just keep expecting it to be after the move, which will mark 8 months.

I do the same thing with my Facebook page, I space out progress shots and such so my page always has content. Most pics posted were taken 2-3 weeks earlier.

I put in for mine mid-Feb. :) I wish I had a better speculation about timing for everyone, but as I said before mine was pushed back by my own choosing so that I could see the new fluke and see if I wanted it. So I should be in the next tail batch they do. I hope you get yours by January.

I was trying to track for while, then just realized that I would be much calmer and happier if I just learn to be patient and wait to hear from the twins that they're ready :) I know they work as fast as I can, and honestly I'd rather they take their time on my tail than have to rush it for a deadline. <3 That said I sure hope it's before January! haha

Mermaid Galene
09-26-2014, 10:17 AM
Yeah, I feel the same way, Maressa. It's only one tail among the many that I ultimately plan to acquire or make. I can wait. Great way to ring in 2015, no?

Was at the Renfest today and saw Mermaid Lyrique in a finfolk production.

My poor friends.... I'm standing behind them talking in hushed tones about which tails were what trying not to be heard by the children in the groups a ways behind us. Except when discussing the parts and anatomy of a tail. Kind of like explaining fingers and toes was the tone I was taking.

At least I hope

Nope, my tail won't be started until much much later. Finfolk is a little behind on orders because of their move, which I wasn't going to mention but you all seem to have caught on. Once they catch up on orders after they complete the move, then they'll get started on the batch of tails that mine is in. So not for quite some time. :) I just got fit the other day because I was down in the area for the Renaissance festival and wanted them to personally measure me before they left.

Just a thought, have any of you with tails tried putting a piece of wig tape at the back of the tail so it doesn't gap when swimming? When I did Burlesque that's what we did with our undies to keep them from slipping... curious if it'd work here too

Mermaid Galene
10-07-2014, 10:38 AM
I suspect tape wouldn't stick to silicone. It would be worth a try, though! I wonder if one could simply put a couple of darts in the back waist of the tail, either by sewing or gluing.

Mermaid Crystal Shimmer
10-07-2014, 11:30 AM
I've noticed it only gaps when I swim fast. In my first video in which I swim more slowly it doesn't gap that much. (practically zero gaping) =) (But maybe it's different for everyone?)

Sherielle
10-07-2014, 12:19 PM
I think there will always be a gap simply due to the way you have to swim in tails.

I really love vacationing in Hawaii; it's a scenery and wildlife lover's paradise! I wouldn't want to live there, though. There are many challenges that come with life on an island. Traffic is horrendous, everything costs more, hurricanes are a yearly threat, it's a longgg way to visit mainland relatives, and many mainlanders who move there end up with serious cabin fever. I have friends who lived on Hawaii, then moved back to Missouri because they just felt too confined on an island. Mind you, I'm not knocking the Hawaiian islands; they are my favorite travel destination on the planet! Moving there is just more of an adjustment than one might suppose.

Really??
How moving to Hawaii is supposed to make their business better and faster then? I don't get this. Arion, the cold winters in Minnesota are hard on their materials- silicone I believe doesn't cure well in the cold, and things like molds and paints also don't benefit from low temperatures. By moving to a warmer climate they'll be able to work during the winter :)

Lorelei
10-13-2014, 04:38 PM
One of my best friends lives in Minnesota and I've visited a few times, she always is telling me stories about how cold the winter gets. My god, I would not survive there in winter I know it. XD
As for Hawaii, the rain (that I've experienced) is really warm, I think it was one of the oddest experiences I ever had there. I already love the rain (I was known in high school as the girl who would come in to class soaked when it rained) and to experience a warm verison of it was amazing, but then again adored every minute of being in Hawaii. That was 9 years ago though. ><

So it's super warm there in spite of the rain??
Rain doesn't necessarily mean cold here in the states :) It rains here in Florida when it's 98 degrees out, and the rain feels like bathwater- then afterwards big clouds of steam come off the roads from the heat and sun evaporating the rain.

It's hard to believe I'll have my tail in two months! It seems so close and so far at the same time. I'm totally nervous about it too. What is my design doesn't look right on the actual tail? What if I don't like the trainer fin? What if my measurements were wrong? What if it looks TOTALLY different in photos and when I get it the colors are wrong? GAH! Need to stop worrying!

Question abtou paint jobs though- did you guys get paint photo updates or was it just like TA-DAAAAAH, it's done!

I got updates, but also they repainted near the beginning because they didn't feel the colours were quite right, so I'm not sure how much of it was to do with that. If you're worrying about it, just ask them! I'm sure they'd be happy to provide more photo updates if you feel you need them.

This was my first thought too...for us Americans anyway, and it might be upped too for otherworldly members too but I'm not a shipping expert either, so. :P

Still though, I get the weather will be way nicer for making tails and the photo-shoot opportunities on Hawaii but the shipping costs are going to be pretty detrimental to business imo. :/

^that said, shipping prices vary DRASTICALLY on wether or not you ask for tracking and insurance. I would assume that the girls add tracking to all of their tails, seeing as that's a HUGE financial loss if the courier loses it. That also said, the shipping prices for their materials might not be such a big added cost. They did say they would be increasing tail prices, but seeing as they had the cheapest full silicone tail on the market by about $500, that's not awful in my opinion.

They also posted that they would be absorbing some of the shipping costs, not sure if that only applies to the clients who ordered before they closed for the move or not, but it's a nice thing to do.

Hey all!

Here are a couple of answers to your questions (and worries) regarding shipping. :)

We always ship UPS. Shipping costs will be slightly higher, but not substantially more expensive than long-distance continental. Remember that shipping will always vary depending on insurance and your location in the continental US. Our overall tail prices will see a small increase to defer our new supply costs, but these increases would have happened regardless of our move. For clients nearing production, some shipping costs may be absorbed - these are agreements between us and each individual client, and are based on their private, financial situation.

Relocating was the best choice for us and our company! The pros far outweigh any cons, including much faster, consistent production in the winter months. We're excited for the new inspiration and opportunities Hawaii will bring, and are ever grateful for your love and support!

Much Mer-love,
A&B

Arion, the cold winters in Minnesota are hard on their materials- silicone I believe doesn't cure well in the cold, and things like molds and paints also don't benefit from low temperatures. By moving to a warmer climate they'll be able to work during the winter :)

ESPECIALLY if the Winter this year was like last year. There were a few days where it was honestly, and scientifically warmer on Mars than in Minnesota. And all our papers are warning that this upcoming winter is going to be vicious.... though I'd take cold any day than being unable to get my car out of the driveway because of a foot or two of snowfall the night before

Stop obsessing, focus on more important things like job, family or friends and use the time (if you have some) to do something else. Or even better, find another thing to obsess beside your tail being in production. Just saying. Good luck ;)

I would find it very sad to squelch my imagination because, when it arrives, the tail I'm imagining might not precisely match what I visualized. Besides, it's already been visualized, in the original design plan. The calming and pleasure-activation effects of visualization are well documented in medical literature. It's a positivity tool.

The shipping business makes incredibly little sense. They have you by the short hairs because they control a thing you want. It's like a hostage situation! Yes, Hawai'i is closer, but it's also a different country. It would not surprise me in the least if, when shipped, a tail from Hawai'i going to Los Angeles to be shipped to Australia from a central hub.

Ilyena

Strangely enough, when I ordered my monofin it went from somewhere in the states to Hawaii then Australia. I guess it may just be who the shipping people are and how they like to organise things

There are some who didn't get permission from their photographer to use the photos for the contest. Copyright issues or something like that. Some who didn't have enough time to have their photos edited. And some who actually forgot lol.

Envoyé de mon iPhone à l'aide de Tapatalk Yeah, a lot of photographers take issue with their work being sold and not receiving profit from the sale... so if FF is selling the calendar they likely would refuse the right to the photo. Just professional preference :-/ Regardless, some great photos got submitted and the calendar looks like it will be great!

I'm also excited for T-shirts :) the sketch they posted a few months back was so beautiful.

Yeah, I think people get confused with copyright. Even if it's your face in the picture, unless you took a selfie, you don't have copyright. The photographer has copyright. You can get a license to use that photo, and usually when you pay a photographer, they include the license for you to use it along with what you paid for their services. The one holding the copyright is the one who should get paid for any reproduction/duplications or profits made from the photo, and the model usually gets paid in a separate contract that doesn't include reproductions or profits from prints, if they get paid at all.

The example of this that comes to mind is the guy who lost rights of a photo to a monkey because it was the monkey that took the picture. Full story here: http://www.designntrend.com/articles/18345/20140823/court-rules-that-monkey-selfie-cannot-be-copyrighted.htm

I think the monkey photo is still in litigation.

When a work (photo) is created, it it's automatically copyrighted by the creator, in this case, the photographer. (It does not have to be registered with the copyright office, but it's a good idea to do so to protect your work.) Just because you are in the photo does not give you the right to publish it. The photographer would have to enter into the agreement with the publisher - in this case Finfolk.

HOWEVER: the photographer can't sell the usage rights to use the image without your signed model release.

Oy, I'm getting impatient. How long are the wait times for everyone so far? So far mine is over 7 months. I ordered when their wait time was supposed to be 3-4 months, so June/July, then they said I was on for July/August, then by mid October before their move, now its just "very soon." I don't want to keep bothering them but I'm getting very anxious. :/ Haven't seen any progress photos, they said it has been started but I initially needed help with designs and sent some photo inspiration but never saw any mockups or anything so not sure if they've even come up with a design yet. They do such great work so I hate to complain but it is just frustrating that dates being pushed back is a common issue with tail makers. I feel like it would be helpful to hire or consult with someone familiar with growth management. It seems many tail makers take on more than they can handle at a time.

Have you given measurements? Do they know what fluke/scales you want? If so, painting & adding fins and such is the last step of the process, so I can see why they mightn't be in contact much. If not, well, I don't know :\
Either way, updates would be nice, especially when you've waited so long already! :( I hope they get back to you soon!

The wait time currently is 7-9 months, I ordered in June and will be getting mine in January (7 months). I was supposed to get it originally in October, then they had so much going on I told them to just not worry about it and finish it whenever so I wouldn't get a rushed tail. I don't think it's a problem for you to contact then and ask questions... as another commented though, make sure you have everything sent in, measurements etc :)

I get what you mean about being impatient. >< It's taking everything in me not to message them to ask for an update because I know they were working on moving to their new place yesterday, so it's going to be soon. They still haven't replied to my other few messages I sent the first week of October.
I'm just hoping I'll get it before I leave for home in Cali for Christmas. I won't be able to film an unboxing video if I get it then. :( So far I haven't gotten anything saying that my tail was even started, so I have no clue where I'm at right now.

AniaR

While I agree it's important to get updates I think all tail makers struggle with that when they make these types of tails once they get to a certain point of demand. As much as we want it to be community standard to not have to wait so long for tails and updates, I think the new standard will be 7 months + wait for quality tails, and occasional updates that typically only happen once the tail is being constructed. I always here well such and such a tail maker replies fast and didn't take a long time. Welllll such and such doesnt have a huge demand and doesnt make the best tails, frankly. lol

I think it would be nice if all the tail makers got together in the various categories and agreed upon a standard and put it out there. I know some of the ncmerfolk were hoping to create a sort of contract all tail makers would agree to.

But given finfolk's past history- just like my tail maker- they've never screwed anyone over yet and people come out of it very happy. Sometimes the wait both for tail and communication just is what it is! Since the start of tail making time people who dont make tails always assume they know what's best for those who do and it's just not realistic. e.g. the idea of hiring more people would just make all the problems go away, when really it often creates problems, creates more delays, and creates a lower quality product, or causes miscommunications.

teeth4u
11-05-2014, 12:32 AM
In my opinion, just because some of the most successful tail makers have poor communication with their clients does not make that "standard" acceptable. I strongly believe that all tail makers should work on providing a great customer service experience. And that is something that applies to almost all businesses, not just tail making. If it were not for the credibility and quality of their products that many tail makers have, the amount of updates given would be completely unacceptable. I guess that's just part of the deal though when you choose who you want to make your tail.

Personally, I think it is completely unrealistic to have tail makers sign a contract stating a standard of customer service. No other market does this nor would agree to it. Customer service is a part of the product. If you have a problem with a tail maker's service and updates, then you should probably buy from someone else.

Excellent customer service is part of what makes any business competitive. I would say it is it's eventually what can make a potential client choose one business over another. With today's technology, there is no excuse for lack of updates, in my opinion. It only takes a moment to dash off a note anw a cellphone snap.

And actually creating a "contract" of that type is collusion, which is illegal...

I think it's less about hiring more employees or the wait time, and more about an efficient and organized communication system. Facebook is a pretty terrible platform for using for business, but great for marketing. FF has always been diligent about responding to messages for me, but I can't imagine what their inbox looks like with all the little ones who want free tails and people with questions who don't read the FAQ.

I think all tail makers could do with a good secretary :D Someone who's job it is to simply filter emails, sorting spam from actual orders, keep current clients updated on tail progress and answer questions (after asking the tail maker of course) and keeping the orders organised, maybe taking down notes about the orders or client questions/requests to be passed on to the tail maker. I could see potential problems with a system like that, maybe even something like an intern who just came in a couple of days a week (one day for spam sorting, one day for client emails or something). I don't know. This is why I'm not a tail maker hahah.

Honestly, my experience with the twins was very good. Looking back, I had no communication problem with them.

They were both very excited to make my tail and they were 100% committed to make sure that I would love it and be very happy. Which I am and I look forward to discuss with them about the second. I already made a deposit with an added cost (rush fees) to make sure that I would get it for Spring or before Summer 2015. For now, I'm still waiting that they finish moving to their new home in Hawaii. I can't say much to reassure all of you that are actually waiting because I got lucky with my first tail and my process lasted 5 months from ordering to receiving the tail home. That happened right before they got really popular while Summer 2014 was approaching.

You're right, it does happen already but in huge industries. Those laws are enforced by the government and are laws, not just contracts. Not only would you have to get every single tail maker who enters the market to agree to these standards, but find a legal way for them to be enforced. Mermaid tail making is already a very small market and putting limits on it would slow growth.

Standards are a great idea but I just don't think it's going to happen any time soon. Mernetwork has already made an excellent source for reviews and information. I think we should focus more on educating the consumer to help him or her have the best purchasing experience. Hopefully with growth in the competitive market firms will raise standards on their own in order to stay on top.

I've just noticed something in the Magictail tail design contest that really annoys me. One of the front runners has used one of finfolk's official photos of a particular tail, recoloured it and then put it on Magictail's template. It is really pretty but I can't help but think it is a bit wrong. I've tagged Finfolk in a comment about it but don't know whether to bother them with a message about it or not. I feel like a dobber or quite petty but it isn't just ripping off a design it is also stealing someone elses photo. What say you all?

Mermaid Kelda

I actually voted for that design, but I didn't bother to open the photo up larger than the thumbnail... I feel wronged somehow xD
It seems all she's done is play with the colour levels in photoshop or whatever. I doubt she actually hand-coloured that. Super disappointing :(

I did the same thing. I loved the colours and the idea of putting printed fins on the body then opened it up larger to find that it was a recoloured photo.
I tagged them in it and then Syrena tagged them too so hopefully they see it (or see this post ;))
Just really annoying how people think that sort of thing is acceptable. And to think that it is looking like it could win! Hopefully Magictail would realise at somepoint.

but it's not stolen if it is freely given.

kind of like that old show "Who wants to be a superhero", you submit your own super hero character to Stan Lee and co, spend time as that hero etc. Thing is, just submitting a hero means you give that idea and concept to Stan Lee/Marvel/SciFi for forever, even if you never got air time.
In this day and age it's pretty much a given that if you submit art for a contest, it no longer belongs to you.

I understand that it is how you explained. However, it's all kinds of lazy from my point of view.

When I see a contest that states that anything submitted stops being my own, I read it as "We need a new design/idea/character/whatever but we do not have any idea of our own, so we are allowing you people (hopefully in the hundreds or thousands) to submit your ideas. When we have found one that we like, and it probably will happen just for all the participation, it belongs to us. We will give you a token (something that is petty cash for us) and we will profit for years (in the thousands) from your thinking."

I don't mind submitting a design for others to use, but the copyright remains with me - to do nothing with it, or maybe to do something. One never knows.

Most literature contests that I have wanted to participate had the same requirements of copyright transfer. Sorry, if I wrote the novel, it is mine. You may publish it and take a percentage of the money made, or make a movie. But the characters and the story are mine forever, and I get to decide what happens with them.

Yeah the same is true for screenplays. I've looked into many competitions and said no to all of them for that reason. I'd have to write something that I know from the beginning is meant for a competition, so I intend from the beginning to hand over copyright. Sometimes the exchange is worth it for credit and notoriety, but it entirely depends on the exposure you get.

Yours is still starting in December, right? :D I forgot, did you decide on a design yet? Awesome!!! That's cool that you're sending in a bra. Skyping the measurements is a good idea... I've been kinda stressed about that myself. Supposedly my tail will be done by January 2, but I feel like I would have heard something about it getting started... I'm trying not to be worried. I have my design all done :) 2542225423

Now I remember seeing that design! Wow, Maressa @-@ I don't know how people like you can come up with such gorgeous works of art. I feel like my tail is so plain now. XD I seriously can't wait to see it come to life, hopefully soon. :) I'm putting trust in the twins that they will pull through soon and not disappoint with the new upcoming works. I'm just so impatient to get started already. >.<
