I finally got to go swimming in my new creation! So happy it's done. Hooray for BIG scales! (Highly recommend going big if you're doing individual scales and have low patience like me... *g*)

So I think most people have probably seen both of our tails before, at least in pictures, but I thought it might be fun to post this swimming video here anyway. Mermaid Lorelei-Varasai just moved to my neighborhood recently and we went for a swim together this week, and she put together this lovely little video! Pictures don't do justice to the way these tails MOVE in the water. We both have Competitors in our tails and they give the perfect amount of realistic flex with just a bit of swishiness at the tips, just like a real fish's caudal fin :) It makes me happy every time I see them in the water.

Keiris and IlynReaver, thank you so much! :3 I can't take credit for the video editing, but I'm really proud of how far I've come with my underwater mugging, haha. My eyes and nose have always been soooo sensitive that it's taken me a really long time to get comfortable getting water in them (saltwater is fine on my eyes but chlorine is excruciating and any water up my nose has always caused me a lot of sinus pain) and this is the first time I've managed to have a truly relaxed expression, I think. Anyway, Lorelei Varasai and I both moved to this neighborhood recently and were super happy to discover this beautiful outdoor saltwater pool nearby!

Yulia and Samantha Siren, both your tails are gorgeous and I'm so happy for you both! I know you both had rotten experiences with other tailmakers, it's great that you both finally get beautiful, functional tails :)

Didn't have a swimming tail that fitted my hydra fin. So made this one up in a week. The seaming is showing a little, but I hadn't taken as much care with this one. Maybe shouldn't have used the green, didn't show as well as the blue, but eh, had to use up the little bits of paint I had left.

Merci beaucoup! I've discussed this with a Confessor and it is alright with him (even tank work, so long as I'm not in a Las Vegas bar or something...lol), yet one of the reasons I'm not swimming again until I've received my tail is that I have also ordered a corset top from Raven which will cover my midriff enough to be modest!

How far down do you have to dive to the statue?
Hope this helps.
U.S. (1962)[edit (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Christ_of_the_Abyss&action=edit§ion=5)]
A third bronze statue, from the original mold, was presented to the Underwater Society of America (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Underwater_Society_of_America) in New York in 1962. On August 25, 1965, it was placed approximately in 25 feet of water off the coast of Key Largo, Florida (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Key_Largo,_Florida), near Dry Rocks (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dry_Rocks_(reef)), approximately six miles east of Key Largo (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Key_Largo) in the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Pennekamp_Coral_Reef_State_Park). The statue weighs around 260 kg, and the concrete base to which it is attached weighs approximately 9 tons. -Source Wikipedia.

And I even got put on the big fish weigh station :)

One of my good friends runs it and even put mermaid on the 'fish chart' and as bait he put down as 'French fries'.
A good laugh for anyone who walks by and reads it lol.

I am so happy for you! :mermaid kiss: That is beautiful and adorable and cute and a possible Splash! reference; during filming they shrink-wrapped Daryl Hannah's legs in her tail to avoid those infamous wrinkles and thus she often found herself stuck in her tail in the water during lunch breaks, at which point the cast and crew would feed her French fries as one would any other form of domesticated(ish) sea life!
(French fries are also popular with angels, if the underappreciated Splash!-inspired '80s comedy Date With An Angel is anything by which to go....)

im laughing so hard at the "raging lady boner" comment. YES YES YES!!! as for tail pic.... idk, i bought my first tail used and it looked ok and had holes from wear and tear so i started sequining and had "floppers" to the tail that are meant to sparkle in a hurry because i noticed last minute that the bottom of the tail had a bad hole in it..... all this after forcing a Finfun fin into a 2tails tail... i was planning on getting shots on vacation, but Cabana Bay Resort at Universal Orlando is VERY RUDE to mers.... i think that lifeguard though might have learned a thing or two about agitating a sadistic southern mermaid. I showed her just how powerful a dolphin kick can be without the fin and enjoyed her shriek and glare. *smirks* yes im an evil little mer. LOL. but idk about the tail. the pictures were on my phone, and that means i have to log into my phone to get them and i'm not even in water :( im not happy with it right now, i'm hoping i'll be able to a pool or something SOON before it starts getting cold in KY so i can take pictures. for such a POPULAR thing people sure do give me weird looks when i ask... and im not really "out there" with my hobbies so yeah, doesnt make it easy for a mergirl. and i spent all night going through all 118 pages. kinda sad at the people that have vanished since 2012.
all the tails are just AWESOME

nah, if anything, you'll deserve it more because you are a mer without having seen a movie about it ;)
(Splash is a neat movie, but imo overrated)
The Little Mermaid is a much better story- the Czech version is the best, and the only one true to the tale.
I have never seen the Disney version, and I don't intend to :p

That's not accurate...they didn't shrink wrap her legs. Bob Short used a honeycomb-like urethane foam inside the tail to minimize the wrinkles and bones. They DID glue the tail shut with superglue once she was in it, and they swiped a lounge chair from the hotel and made her a makeshift lift with it to get her in and out of the water, like transporting a dolphin.
The french fries part is true, though! ;)

I would very much like to see the source of this information, not because I doubt its veracity, but because I have been fascinated by the process involved in Splash! since I was a little...whatever. :thinks::cthulhu: I always found the statement that Hannah's legs were "shrink-wrapped" highly questionable (and likewise that that was/is also true of the Mako merfolk of H20 and it's spin-offs), yet went with it as that was the term used by Tom Hanks in the DVD Making-Of featurette. What you describe seems a more reasonable way of producing the desired results, however, and super-gluing the tail would have been necessary for full realism in the days before Raven and her blended waists! :mermaid kiss:

Well, the source of the information was from extended conversations I had with Bob and Barbara Short at Merfest this past January, and I think some of the information was also covered in his presentation there, as well.
As for super gluing her in, there was a problem with the original tail (urethane rubber, not as stretchy or durable as dragonskin - which hadn't been invented at that point) and it got ripped. Being on a boat with limited supplies, they went with the Crazy Glue and it worked...she just had to stay in the tail!
And while Tom Hanks is a talented guy, I would tend to believe the guy who made the tail over the guy who acted with the actress who wore the tail.

I suspected that the information came from Bob Short when you dropped his name, and I thank you for clarifying. Tom Hanks probably just didn't understand the details of the process, then. The material for the tail was more primitive that dragonskin and its make, while impressive for the time, has been improved upon considerably by Raven and her peers (one can easily spot the seam in the Splash! tail, for instance).

Yeah, I'd be wary of this. Better yet, I'd just report it outright.
"This is an example of a tail I can make for you" is a major red flag. Only one picture of this tail, no pictures of any others, she doesn't even list materials or state anywhere that she actually made the tail posted in the listing. Every time I've seen this line used, it's been on costume listings using photos of other people's works because A) the person hasn't actually made their own tail yet but is still somehow convinced that they can already make a tail like a pro, which means any sucker stunned enough to take the risk is either going to get a shoddy quality item that looks nothing as advertised, or lose their money when the maker realizes "oh crap, this is harder than I thought," gets overwhelmed and disappears, or B) is outright scamming.
No materials listed-- Are they fabric tails? Neoprene? Silicone? Latex? Alex Plus? They don't mention materials anywhere, which is a major risk. And THEN you get to the part in the description saying "You choose the materials." What? So if I message her wanting a dragonskin silicone tail, she can make that for me (and for $400 CAD??????)? Does this person even have experience with any of these materials? And if she does, why does she have no photos of anything showing what she's capable of doing with these materials?
Her other listings are resale items, save for a pair of pants (https://www.etsy.com/listing/248349664/my-little-pony-custom-rave-pants?ref=shop_home_active_4) and a dress (https://www.etsy.com/listing/248243425/kawaii-cloud-dress?ref=shop_home_active_15) that both look like they were sewn by an 8th grade Home Ec student and another dress (https://www.etsy.com/listing/249476386/unicorn-rainbow-bridge-dress?ref=shop_home_active_2) that's literally just a drawing in the preview photo. Everything else is mass-produced, licensed merch that she's just reselling.
Also interesting: She can post pictures of the pants and dress she actually made, but she can't post pictures of any mermaid tails she's made.
So many red flags. I really hope nobody actually tried to order from her. :(

I hang out with Thom Shouse periodically, (he was a major part of the splash tail team) and what he's told me validates pearlie's post :) She always says it took 3 (5?) hours to get in the tail every time etc etc but turns out that was only the first time, and Deryl Hannah likes to dramatize the process a little. ;) but yeah they left her in it at lunch to save time :D

"We are the original and first clothing company to put lights in dresses and have been doing it for over 15 years, Your dress can even light up underwater if you'd like"
Wow, the first?!?! 15 years?!?!? Underwater???!!!!???!?!?!?!?!
Your Etsy store just SCREAMS experience and skill so I think I'll have to ignore the lack of actual not-stolen product photos from the past 15 years of light-up dresses and fork out more than $1000 for a dress that will DEFINITELY hold up underwater because that is not hard to engineer at all
You'd think if you actually made Carrie Underwood a dress, you'd plaster that name-drop fucking everywhere.

haha! omg yeah i saw that and had to a double take! then i got fascinated with the swirly tail.... i wanna swirly tail *pouts* i think i might play with my next fabric one and swirl pearls and rhinestones around the entirety.... might as well have some fun with the little bit i can afford. i'd kill for space and talent to make my own or the funds to buy one..... speaking of, have any of you bought these gorgeous tails from here? https://www.etsy.com/listing/245571530/custom-mermaid-tail?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=mermaid%20tail&ref=sr_gallery_21 she says "this is an example of a tail i can make for you" for the price if she was that good, i'd jump at it, but i have a feeling that it's possibly a scam since i messaged her and have yet to see any "examples of her work" just letting all my fellow mers know that this is out there for the warning. I saw the post where the mermaid premiered the tail on here. so i recognized it immediately.. if it is the same mermaid, i'd love to know why she's got two shops lol
I messaged Ilonka on deviantart and let her know about this. I gave her the url for Etsy's DMCA takedown form and encouraged her to report it, since it's obviously a scam :/ Hopefully she does.

Thank you Iona, i was in the process of sending it to you too on etsy but my computer died... I emailed the woman asking to see more of her work and all she said was "that is an example, i am in the process of creating more tails and will upload pictures as i finish." i just sent back "i understand that but thats not YOUR creation and i was asking to see one that YOU have done" she has yet to reply. *rolls eyes*

http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?12017-Kalani-s-Fabric-and-Silicone-Tail!&highlight=neoprene+tail
My next project is that I'm working on a process to actually dye neoprene instead of paint it so I can get uber uber detailed in my next tail (see my artwork at bottom of thread) and not have to worry about paint either cracking or flaking off.
If it all works out like it seems to be going, I'll even be able to do neoprene/silicone hybrid tails using this method. And, if any damage is done to the silicone (as happens from use and wear), then the silicone only is what will have to be repaired (i.e. matching and replicating previously made tail colors and patterns), not the dye job done directly and permanently into the neoprene.
Original art by me - Copyright 2015
Entitled: "Le Roi"
(I hope the detail can be seen when I upload this):

Thank you, Michelle and Vrindavana. That kind of extremely intricate detail, I am looking to dye into the neoprene. Not sure how I want to do it, yet -
Option 1 ) If I want to draw and pattern each individual scale. Issues) Getting a kind of uniform look throughout the tail while remaining true to original vision so it doesn't look like a hodge podge of busy visual crapola.
Option 2) Just do the tail with the intricate deigns how I normally do my art and add "scaling" as more of a texture with silicone that will show up as a subtle scale look without interfering with the visual patterns in the neoprene below.
Then again, I may end up just going eff the whole thing and do both.
That's the problem with having gone to art school - seeing multiple possible angles of approach to a particular project, then just saying "eff it" and, instead of choosing *one*, deciding to do a piece for each approach just to see what will happen and how it'll turn out. This normally ends up being cool, but it's one of several working theories as to why we extremely creative types decide make and do tons of work, but it makes us slightly kooky in the process (as a widepread generalization). Like going "I choose ALL the options!"

^^^ Yep! Also why so many of us artists are usually more than just one kind of artist. Rarely do you find an artist who only does one style of music, or only paints oils, etc. We're always pursuing multiple interests, even if we have a main focus.

I had a chance to try out my new fabric tail in my brother's pool this afternoon. They were off watching the Martian, So I had to borrow a selfie stick to take the photos.
Probably the last week or days of good weather before fall set in. Was a nice Indian summer day. My brother thought the pool would be too cold, I thought it was like most pools I have swum in the past.

Those are some pretty colors, mersheep.
The colors are why I took the risk on this tail. I am happy with it, although there are a few caveats, some of which I expected. The main issue is that some of the stitching done with an overlock machine have come loose, probably due to the tension on the stretch fabric. This for me is an easy fix. Others might find it bothersome. I have been reading these forums since last spring (although I did not create an account until I wanted to see some album photos.) So I am well aware that this issue, especially in a private pool with a rough finish was a strong possibility. The included care sheet warns of this too.
Ideally a quality fabric tail would have a "Flat felled" seam. This is what is used on denim jean pants along the legs. It was more popular back in the mid 19th century as it is easer to do by hand.

I wore an Arda wig this one is Luthien in Apple red, and it held up great! I braid my hair underneath and use about 5-10 bobby pins to keep it on. The only think I didn't like was the bangs kept getting in my face :P they are also having a sale soon so if you wanted to grab one next week is a good time!

How do you guys dry your wigs after getting them wet? I know that some wigs really do not like getting wet, and after get 'crispy'.
I use to style cosplay wigs a lot and I would use the hot water technique to get some things to stay since the fibers in most wigs are synthetic and with heat can be styled into crazy styles. (and the aid of hair spraying it the gods and back...) some anime hair is CRAZY!

I like the rainbow reflection your tail makes in the sand! Are these individually sewn on sequins?

Thanks! Haha
Sadly no, I regret it now, but I used E6000 and even though that worked, the original glue the sequin company used to attach the plastic to the metallic shiny stuff, didn't hold very well so I had many casualties. And when I say adjustments, I'll probably have to go back and see the on. What fun. Lol
