I recently did some work on mine to for my new mahina fin. The sequins color shift from green to purple and I found four way stretch spandex that does the same!

^^ hello! I figured I should go with the flow and post my own fabric tail. I had a previous tail that was white with orange accents for a koi theme, but I'm liking this odd blue/green and gold blend that ended up much brighter than I expected. I have larger pectoral fins because being a bit larger myself I like having something that brings my size in context.
I may have missed most of summer, but I'm covered for my Halloween at least!

I've just purchased a silicone fluke for a costume for Halloween . The top is going to be textured and the bottom flat. Originally I wanted to attach it to a piece of long fabric but I think it would look more realistic with some type of long flat silicone piece about 4 feet maybe with scales and then I would attach it to a piece of fabric around my waste. The character I have in mind is Poseidon half man and half fish. Any suggestions ? Thanks a bunch where can I purchase something before Halloween

I made my tail with spandex. The scaled fabric comes from Etsy, the pink one and the one used for fins comes from a fabric store in my city.

Kitson that is truly magnificent. The stripe pattern near the opening reminds me of a leopard shark, and fins fit it to a tee. As for the fluke, absolutely awesome. Somehow it reminds me of a butterfly, but still captures an aquatic nature very well. You look amazing in that tail.

And I feel you with the not being able to see! For me, the worst thing about swimming without my prescription goggles is not being able to make eye contact with anyone, even if they're right next to me (and we're not underwater!) It always makes me feel sort of exposed... and isolated. It's not easy to explain! But I hate it.

LouLouBelle, I understand exactly what you mean. :( It's especially tough when kids see you and you can hear them getting all excited, but can't make sense of where the noise in coming from. I remembered trying to explain to a young one (back when I used my Fin Fun tail) why I couldn't swim away from the edge of the pool to play with her. I feel like blindness isn't the easiest thing for them to understand unless they've dealt with it, and it always makes me feel bad knowing I can't go out and swim around with others safely even though I know some would really love to splash in the water with a mermaid. At least we still bring smiles though, right? :)

I finally have my first tail! It's very simple, but it was well worth and amazingly fun to swim in. Now to make adjustments to my pattern and make at least one more fabric tail before retrying with neoprene.

Hi All! It's been a while since I've posted here. I recently whipped up a new tail skin for an appearance with Halifax Mermaids when I couldn't find my silver sequin fabric tail.

Check out my black glitter-dot tail! It's the high-quality jersey glitter-dot fabric. I made it for over my black Mahina Merfin so that the monofin actually shows through. I haven't swam with it yet. (I haven't swam at ALL since the winter!!)

New FinFun, shot while I was being extra lazy.
My first tail (not FinFun) was too short, and would pull over my rear as I swam. Thus I have, up to now, bought custom skins from FinFun. But this tail is not offered in custom sizes. I took a chance that their adult large would fit. It did!

New FinFun, shot while I was being extra lazy.
My first tail (not FinFun) was too short, and would pull over my rear as I swam. Thus I have, up to now, bought custom skins from FinFun. But this tail is not offered in custom sizes. I took a chance that their adult large would fit. It did!

Finally got my first tail! Its been 17 years since I first found out you could become a 'real'mer!! And boom!! Im 24 years old and I finally have my own. My FinFun tail came in yesterday and I tried it out today, it's pretty sweet! Went for the Tidal Teal. I told myself that I wouldn't get a blue one since the "blonde hair blue eyes blue tail" mermaid is pretty cliche, but I loved this design so much! Tomorrow I'm gonna go pick up a purple seashell swim top, it's gonna look really nice with this tail! I hope I can get to a meetup sometime soon.

The blue one is from magictail.de which is my current tail . Probably the best tail I ever own.
The purple one is from planet mermaid it is discontinued tail color they have new ones with scales this was my first tail ever owned.
The other tail is is from eBay it is a copy of a fin fun tail.

Haven't been too active on here, but should get a bit more active now that the weather is (hopefully) getting warmer. I did, this past winter, picked up a new tailskin as I wanted a bit of an updated version with a better design. It's another Fin Fun, their Tidal Blue tail! Kind of goes along with my last tail which was a solid blue. I took a few selfie pics with it on, but none of them turned out that good so I'll try again at a later point! Looking forward to test swimming in this one!

Ack, sorry for the disappearance there!

Yeah you can use a digital program for this, which is what I did for these two designs. You just gotta treat it differently, and not save as a .jpg file (you'll be stuck with horrific pixellations if saved as a .jpeg!). It can be a little tricky pulling the actual image from the pdf file, and then prepping it for proper use, but worth the greater flexibility in customization!

This depends entirely on the quality and psi you save it as. If you leave it at the standard 72psi that most internet image files are saved as, then yes, this will be a problem. Most prints in order to have decent quality need to be saved at the very least 150, but most professionals don't recommend going less than 200. Personally, when I plan on printing an image, save it at a resolution of 300psi. This lets the image preserve it's detail, even if you save it as a JPEG.

The reason I suggest saving a digital Finfun tail design as a JPEG is because it is specifically the file type Finfun asked for when uploading any design that isn't a photo.

I’ve poured my own resources into getting it started so have asked the companies to donate one but noone has responded yet. If anyone knows of someone who makes them that isn’t a small mom and pop company that can afford to donate one it’s a tax write off and for a good cause. (Raising money for the endeavor as a mermaid)

How is Jaffa being rude to you? She is just telling you that no one is going to give you a free tail. Do you really think that someone will give you something that's easily over $2000 for free? I had to work and save up for a very long time until I had the funds to buy materials to make my silicone tail, which by the way took 2 years for me to make. The dragonskin silicone alone cost me over $400. Silicone tails are expensive for a reason; the cost of the materials and the time and effort it takes to make just one tail. No one is going to give you things for free, you have to work for them. Also, I don't think that someone would want to do business with you, considering that you threw a hissy fit when we told you that no one would get a tail worth thousands of dollars for free.

Mermaid Jaffa was not trying to be rude to you, she was simply stating the fact that most companies would not send a free tail to anyone, unless they see a Return On Investment, usually publicity to a wide audience (thousands+) in the mermaid community. If you can offer that to them, then maybe you might be lucky to get a free tail but otherwise you need to be realistic.

If you can't afford a tail you can always consider sewing your own fabric tail or casting your own silicone tail.

I mean, it shouldn't be TOO hard if you've got a good ed program for suicide prevention to get a grant so you can pay a tailmaker. I'm sure with a legit tax write off from your 501(c)3 and payment to cover the cost of materials, a donation shouldn't be TOO hard to secure.

But you need an existing program for donations of that magnitude, not "I'm starting one up." May I recommend some classes on nonprofit management? They're cheaper than a silicon tail if you're not doing the full degree program, and there's a number of universities who offer them online.

Mermaid Elisa, If you know how to sew you can make your first tail pretty easily. That gives you something at least until you can save up. Most big tailmakers do not do this, b/c honestly there are alot of great causes to donate too, so it makes it hard for them. Good luck

I followed the advice of the forum and went with fin fun for my first tail, and I'm glad I did. My only minor issue with it is my hobbit feet are a pain to get into the monofin cover. Otherwise holy shit, I've never had so much fun in the water in my life. I'm glad I combed through the network first, it was super helpful. You guys are great.

Please post a link to your non-profit status (503c) and an outline of your plan on how exactly you intend to use mermaiding as a therapeutic tool in the prevention of depression and suicide.

Ooo! Is that the Celtic Green? That's one of my fave colors.It is! I think I managed to grab one of the last they had in both large and medium before they launched the redesign. I have nothing against the newer one, but I liked the darker color of the original better. It looks awesome in lake Erie, I'm so happy with it.

Yeah, sorry, it’s just someone who claims to be altruistic is obviously out for their own gain. As a mer who has struggled with depression and suicidal ideologies my whole life, it boils my blood to see someone use real sufferers as an excuse for personal profit. But yeah, I digress.
