Finished a spandex swimming tail for a client this weekend; shipping it today. She wanted Ariel hip fins; first time I've done them & happy with how they turned out. She will flip them down against her hips when swimming. :)

That looks wonderful! Did you use something inside to stiffen the hip parts, or will the rows of stitching be enough to hold the shape?

Yes I used padding/interfacing; you can't tell in the photo really but the hip fins are standing up off the floor. Had to press them down a bit to get the picture.

I advised the water will beak it down over time but it will almost everything :)

She wanted the hip fins to look just like the face character at Disney. :)

Not really sure what Harmony said, I couldn't find her quote...

But I agree with:

I've been Mer swimming with waist length hair for over 40 years, and not had any problems. Except maybe untangling it after I'm out of the water!

We always said at the Springs... "If a Mermaid cuts their hair short they'll lose the magic". Us old Mer's believe in the Old Magic!

Just curious, what were the dangers Harmony mentioned?

I couldn't find any comment on the "dangers" of long hair, either. When you've had long hair a long time, you are used to its quirks. I might have to spend a longer time untangling it, but isn't that a traditional depiction of a classical mermaid? I do swim with it up in a clip or wrapped in a tight bun, but that's usually only when I'm training.

Some people look super cute with cropped hair. I'm just not one of them.

Oh, this is because I just cut my hair, and so kids were asking about why my hair was short, and I said that long hair is one of the main killers of mermaids, because it gets caught in propellers, coral, and fishing lines, which is why that mermaids spend so much time taking care of their hair and brushing it so that it won't get tangled in them. But the reason I cut mine was because an octopus was turned by the kracken to the bad side and tried to kidnap me and I had to cut away and accidentally cut my hair as well, but it works out, because I don't have to worry about the above for now. :) It's just a fun thing.

Thanks Mermaid Harmony! I knew there had to be more to this... A line taken out of context really leaves one wondering... And I love your explanation! I'll bet the kids had wide open eyes and looks of incredible awe when you told them about getting away from the octo-turn-kracken! Way fun!

I figured she'd elaborate on it, cause I always butcher it when I tell people why AJ has short mer hair and they look at me like "what...?" When Harmony explains merisms it comes out cute and fun, when I do it I think I normally end up sounding super creepy or too pretentious and sciency.

SeaSister
10-09-2013, 02:48 AM
Mermaid Harmony, I don't have a tail yet, but I think that when I do I'll explain my short hair by saying that I made a deal with Ursula the Sea Witch so that if I gave her my hair she would grant me the ability to turn into a human whenever I want. That would be a big help, actually, because then I don't have to worry about kids seeing me with no tail and calling me a fake. :P

Here's the most recent progress picture of my Finfolk Productions tail! They uploaded the 1st picture on their FB, and the 2nd one is the most recent picture they sent me. You can see how fantastic they were at transforming and gradiating the colours from the previous progress pic (the deep purple and yellow tail). They made it a lot more iridescent, shaded in pinks, and turned the yellow more champagne, which I requested for and am completely happy with. This fluke is also their newest fluke design. I love that it's so flowy and fae.

To be added: extra fins, and gold scale tipping.
I'm so psyched. I can't wait to get my tail and start practising in it for my upcoming gig. I just feel like this is the tail of my dreams, and Finfolk is doing a stellar job of translating it into RL.

It's just my opinion but i think you should keep it short because that's a thing that could make you differente and unique from the other mermaids.
That's why i always loved Kimberly Wyatt from The Pussycat Dolls ! :D

Now onto other things, my fabric tails. I have 3 fabric tails, one plain black, one shiny black and one shiny white which got hand-made by me. (My poor fingers.)

How did you manage that? Close to the surface?

If I submerge, my tail is barely visible, much less any detail lol.

Hi guys, I've been on this forum for a few years know and love following and reading all the interesting threads. I don't comment alot because I'm kinda shy and after sharing photos of my neoprene tail everybody was so nice and friendly I decided to show the transformed painted neoprene tail, I've waited a long time and after 3 months I've finished my sequin tail!!!!! I love it!!!
The first one is photoshopped and the second one is what the tail really looks like (but it has to be photoshopped to as you can see, it kinda needs a background)

I'll post a video of me swimming in it tomorrow (if I don't forget, help me remember)

I made a thread about how I transformed my neoprene tail in this sequin tail, since this tail was recycled I didn't make a "how I made my tail thread" (I do have one of when it still was a painted neoprene tail) and these are not 12mm sequins, they're bigger.

@ Pearl Bae - It looks sturdy enough to be swimmable but I went and looked for the ad, she's just sitting in a chair, so I'm not sure.

Thanks, Kalani! I did have help, though. Nymora traced out my body shape onto the fabric, and then I left little to no seam allowance when I cut the fabric. Then I sewed half, and she did the rest. (Also, I've always loved the word shnazzy.) I can't wait to show you guys the other selkies! There were three of us on the ship. (Nymora is a genius. Just sayin'!)

Thank you all so much for your lovely comments, cannot discribe how happy I am to read all of them!!! :-) I have been a sculptor and painter all my life and in the last years I used to create silicone mermaid belts, bracers and other stuff to get used to the characteristics of silicone and some other materials. Iīm an artist, a perfectionist in detailing and quite an experienced mermaid but what I was unsure about were the swimming abilities of my tail. Is it usable? Stable? Buoyancy neutral? Does it swim fluently and elegantly? Thank god, yes. :phew: But it was difficult to achieve this by intent because of my lack of experience in technical tailmaking. I think, all of this is high risk. You invest a lot, work so hard months and months but thereīs no guarantee that this thing would survive even one dive or propel you even one meter. It just came out great but that was also.... luck. As for the veins: I love it that you discribe them natural!! (because my main job is veterinary anatomist ;-))

So you're the one with the gold Merbella tail with the aquarium videos on youtube! I thought I recognized that belt. Awesome job on the dragon tail and top. I'm absolutely envious of your skills. Any idea if you'll start making some to sell, or is your tail one of a kind?

SeaNymph, that tail is beautiful, and you are beautiful in that tail! :mermaid kiss: I seriously wasn't sure if that was a Merbella or not, and I am especially glad that you told us of your inspirational dragon!

You see, as part of the escapism that we female-dominant-hermaphrodites-brought-up-as-male tend to seek, I played a fair bit of Dungeons & Dragons in my time and thus immediately recognized your tail and top as having a Green Dragon motif; it seems quite likely that the illustration which inspired you was itself inspired by the Green Dragon of that game. Designed by Sam Wood, the 3rd Edition D&D Green Dragon borrows a lot of its look from the Green Moray Eel, giving you even more sea-cred through association with Flotsam and Jetsam!

You now have me thinking of how I spent the Spring and Summer of 2005 playing a D&D Bronze Dragon Hatchling and - Daenerys from Game of Thrones-style - desperately trying to get it to be able to use its breath weapon. (It was in The World's Largest Dungeon, which is like trying to raise a baby in The Hunger Games, but I did succeed.) I mention this because the Bronze Dragon is an aquatic dragon and it inspired both my pendant and an aspect of the top which Raven is working on. Likewise, the Green Dragon is a water-breather, which makes your inspiration even more appropriate, and it is so beautiful that I'm going to post another Mermaid Kiss! :mermaid kiss:

@ Aziara: Yes, youīre right, I do aquarium shows sometimes and the belt and some other things I made to practice skulpting. And yes, there was a little moment when I dreamt to be a tailmaker, getting more experience, becoming the "European Raven"... but then I woke up and reality told me that I donīt have time for this because I have a very challenging and time consuming main job AND my mermaid shows. So probably this will remain a dream...

@ Michelle: Wow, thatīs amazing. I have been a "Dungeons & Dragons" player for long time, later I became a LARP character (silver dragon in human form). I was crazy about dragons and collected everything about them, especially the fantasy artwork of Ciruelo. So, I think now Iīm more a diving dragon than a mermaid ;-)

@ Perlie and Jessica: Thatīs high praise coming from you two, because for me you are very promising, inspiring and tasteful tail makers and I admire both your tail works so very much.

@Kishiko: Beautiful work, Iīm sure your tail will have a nice shimmer under water. I admire everyone who can sew, I was never able to do this. If I could, first thing I would do is creating a neoprene tail with thousands of sequins...

Oh dear; the dragon figurine pic link appears dead....

I know how you feel about being a diving dragon, though; I feel exactly the same way about my own mermaid self. I must remember your fondness for dragons; my upcoming Merbella tail is somewhat dragon-inspired, too! :mermaid kiss:

@Balsam Mermaid: You and your tail look amazing. My hair must remain virginal, but I do respect how you went to the trouble of ensuring that yours matched your tail!

Does the dragon work now?

Yes it does; I can see why you put a metallic sheen on your tail! Interestingly enough, due to such things as the greenness of your tail and the spots on its fluke, it actually appears to more closely resemble the look of the D&D Green Dragon than the figurine does. Well, you did say that you played a lot of the game.... :jester:

SeaNymph
03-26-2014, 05:17 PM
Yes, the figurine inspired me to start the tail but you're right, there was more the green dragon of D&D in my mind. I even used a little bit of Harry Potter's "Welsh Green Dragon" ;-)

I saw those gloves earlier, they're amazing! I was thinking about doing a similar thing for myself sometime, too, maybe by airbrushing a pair of these Darkfin Webbed Power Gloves (http://www.amazon.com/Darkfin-Webbed-Gloves-Tan-Mens-L/dp/B00FG6OJ78/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1394567434&sr=8-2&keywords=Darkfin+webbed+power+gloves) or something.

(Also I totally think there should be a thread for sea-dragon mers! :D My tail design (http://mernetwork.com/index/attachment.php?attachmentid=19215&d=1394423411) is based off of an old roleplay character I used to play who was a shapeshifting dragon, so I guess my mersona could possibly count? :D)

Just finished!

I named it after the fabric I used, Aloha Tail.

I made a pocket thing like in the Magictail so I can take out my monofin. Got too over enthusiastic with the fluke, how I was not liking its shape so i cut and cut, now its too short! Next time I'll draw up a pattern for it.

Wow; a Floral Mermaid! I admit I was a bit taken aback by it, for I am accustomed to scaly fish- or dragon- or cetacean-like merfolk, but the more I think about it the more I understand its cleverness.

It does look very Hawaiian and thus conjures up images of brightly-coloured sarongs and the ladies who wear them, and the fact that it is a mermaid tail rather than a dancer's skirt gives the impression of a meso-transformation. It makes me imagine a tropical sheltered bay, where a man or woman enchanted by your beauty discovers that the lovely woman with whom they fell in love earlier that evening has a "deep" secret...as her tail disappears beneath the moonlit waves.

Thank you MermaidMichelle!

I decided on making something less fishy, and more to what kind of colors and prints I like. The orange isn't too bright. Its just like a regular orange color you get in colored pencils.

You could make a dry costume set ;)

I have several tails modified so I can walk in them, also scaled leggings and scaled tops I don't take into the water.
