Oh, I meant the flared bottom. I didn't realise you planned on sequinning the whole thing! What a job!
Oh, the flared part is huge! There's four times as much fabric in that part as in the "body." I don't know if the waistband would stand up to the weight of that covered in sequins and glue! I'm just covering the light purple part.

thanks! the monofin is nice, it's a lot easier to use than my magictail which would just drag along behind me, but it's still heavy under the water and was a bit of a pain, especially if I stopped for even a second. I sunk like a rock! the propulsion is nice, definitely not as good as a regular monofin but it's pretty good.

Intriguing; I wonder if that is a normal problem for those types of monofins. In any case, you look beautiful in your tail and it is a very appropriate design for your moniker! :mermaid kiss:

So here is my tail. *screams of horror*
(Insert sponge Bob episode where he thinks he is ugly and in a movie theatre) I made it in a jiff. So its one of those tails thats a tester so i dont care if it gets banged up. Im pretty happy with the measurements which left a few wrinkles but meh.. i can barely fit my ass into it haha
I wanna take it out so bad. Also, sorry for da mess mon'. Haha im trying to figure out top options, but so far my tops have been a flop.

Nevertheless, it has a natural dolphinesque quality (especially in the fluke) which I find appealing. I also find your choice of top appealing; the scene I imagine is you at a graduation party getting a beverage poured over your head and then...YOUR SECRET'S OUT! :cheerleader: :mermaid kiss:

The two fabric tails I own. The first one is my newer of the two from Fin Fun, the other one is from another creater which the name slips my mind at the moment. I've only taken the second one for a couple swims in a friends pool, have yet to try the new one out in the water yet.

That's why i'm making a second one... And yes i made the top for this photo shooting... ;) latex parts glued on fabric... More pictures will come soon as i'm waiting for the photographer to Finish editing them... ;)

very nice Anceos!
It's a learning process for sure! I used a metal mesh imprint on my latex.. and it was messy and a huge pain in the fluke. I understand so much more about construction issues. Although it turned out well, I'm also sure I will never do it this way again! (anyway, I've got a tail-maker working on a silicone one now)

My tail was originally monofin-less, but I now wear it with a FinFin monofin, that small upgrade makes it feel so much more realistic to me :)

It's not bad, it's a cheap lightweight mono(I think Raina featured it in a recent video she did on kids' safety mermaiding?), so it's perfect for dry cosplaying as well as kicking back in kiddie pools

So I had to cut my tail a bit earlier yesterday to be able to use it again.
Long story short, I broke a bone in the middle of my left foot so it's made my foot weaker and since I don't have the finances to fix it. .. my left foot will remain forever broken. I rarely used my tail after that but I've been dying to use it. So I tried earlier this week and realized that I'm not 100% capable anymore. So it was either sit and stare at my 4.6 k tail that'll probably never be reproduced again or find a way through it to be able to use it regularly again. So I told Finfolk I was going to hack up their creation. Just kidding lol, I was making only adjustments to be able to use it as often as I wanted to again.
So I present to you: a skinnier version of my tail! It lost a few pounds of weight and shortened itself up. I kind of regret not leaving it longer but piece by tiny piece, I realized that most of the weight came from the silicone after the monofin.
I made the sides super flowy instead of leaving it hard because with only one foot strong enough, I felt like I was swimming lopsided. And it displaced a lot of water so it was harder on me in general so I hope this helps with it's fluke movement by having it thinned out and flowy. The body of the fluke is stiff because there's not much more hanging edges but the sides should be super flowy to make up for it. Going to test it out in a few days to compare swimming movements.
Let me know what you guys think!

I would have to go back to see the before images, but it's gorgeous anyway, so I don't need to!
Is there anything you can do to strengthen your foot to compensate? (I've permanently damaged my left ankle and knee and would easily swim in circles if I don't constantly and consciously try and correct it...as a result, my left thigh and butt cheek seem bigger to me!)
Meilyn
07-08-2015, 02:29 PM
Thank you everyone. Pearlie, no. It's the second/third toe from the pinkie toe on the left foot that snapped. Unless I go in for surgery which I don't have the priorpriority or money for, they can't fix it. At this point it's permanently collapsed. I don't think the shape of my foot helps either because I have duck feet and a collapsed arch. It hurt the second to last time I tried to swim and I was also swimming funny too. It doesn't hurt anymore but I don't want to risk straining anything else so much because like in Finding Nemo, I now have a special fin lol.

Oh my. I'm very sorry about your accident (I guess Obamacare hasn't helped as much as we here in Canada had hoped)! Still, I must say that you resized your tail so expertly that it is quite difficult to tell the difference between it now and that which it once was save that the uniform colour now makes it more realistic! :mermaid kiss:

The fun thing about obamacare is that if you're in a conservative state, your state an opt out. Meaning it's still very expensive and some other stuff. And if you don't have a decent paying job, it's still hard to afford, what with payments and copays.

I just got back from a weekend trip to Vortex Springs. I had so much fun! So far it was the most fun time I have had in my tail yet! A lot of little kids thought I was a real mermaid and one little girl touched my fluke. Equal amounts of boys and girls said they wanted a tail too. Last night when it was starting to get dark I took the preacher's little daughter with me because she wanted to swim with me while I was wearing my tail. When we went to the dock there was a crowd of people already on the dock trying to look for a big fish someone saw while paddle boarding. When I got in the water with my tail they were curious about how fast I could swim and they told me to show them how fast I could go, so I swam off as fast as I could and while it didn't feel fast to me they said I was pretty fast. The preacher's daughter now wants a mermaid tail and I will have to look into a good monofin for her. I don't know if I she should get a fin fun monofin or what but that is what I am about to research. Anyways the water was super cold but totally worth it. I had so much fun swimming down to the fish and swimming in a school of brim. My pictures are not that great. I think my boyfriend isn't very thrilled to take mermaid photos for me. He didn't really tell me when he was taking pictures or give me many instructions when I asked him to. *Sigh* I might need to find a new photographer. So yeah I am not smiling in the photos because I didn't know what was going on.

Mermaid Jaffa - Actually it is a sports bra believe it or not! I have always felt un-comfortable wearing swim tops because I always feel like they are going to fall off of me especially when swimming fast or jumping off of the diving board, etc. It would not be un-common for me to be seen fidgeting with my top making sure it was on securely. With the sports bra I don't get worried about it coming off and I certainly don't fidget with it. The brand of sports bra I am wearing in the photos is danskin and I got it at Wal-Mart.

Same here.
The only thing I will warn about though is even when jumping off of things in a sports bra - like for instance when I jumped off of a high swing into the water and a few instances when I went down a large slide that sent you flying out into the water - the impact made my top come up a little under water so I quickly pulled it down before I surfaced. :$ Perhaps if I had worn my tighter fitting sports bra that wouldn't have happened. I am sure a good way to avoid that problem is wearing a once piece, but I don't like wearing one pieces. Still, there are not nearly as many issues when wearing a sports bra then there are when wearing a regular swim top and you don't have to worry about those annoying straps coming un-tied or needing to be re-tightened.

I swim in my tails, but I prefer shorter tails in water.
While I "identify" with naga (female would be nagini, I guess), loads of olden mermaid sightings cite how the mermaid/merrow/okeanid was 50-100 metres long.
Which translates as "really long tail" in my book.

Oh, Vermine Venom!
I've seen her photos before. She's an amazing cosplayer.
Not sure if she can move in that tho xD

Nice! Makes sense to me! ^.^
Would you ever consider making a silicone or latex snake tail or do you prefer fabric for its maneuverability and ethereal aesthetic?
Echidna

Fabric is best for transport and solo shows, but I wouldn't say no to a shorter silicone tail for photoshoot and maybe aquarium opportunities once I can justify the expense.
It couldn't be really long though (who would carry that around?).
And I probably would order one, not make it myself as I've never worked with moulds.

Very cool. Here is another one I found after a quick search. Remember seeing it awhile ago in the show Hercules the legendary journeys. http://www.latexmaskcentral.com/images/hartwellpics/she-demon.jpg
Old mermaid sightings are fun I think. The two varieties I have heard of are two tailed mermaids (like the starbucks mermaid) and ones with snake/eel tails. In any case awesome tail!

Crochet can look very much like silicone!
Sadly swimming is so much harder, or else I could make all tails I'd ever need myself.

So this is a silicone tail? Do we know if it is dragonskin? Based on a comment on this video, it was casted using scale sheets.

Yes, it's Dragonskin. Kariel made a tail or two (that I know of) using the individual scale method (aka the Pearlie Method ;) )
I asked on her Facebook if she did scale sheets for this new design and she replied yes.
Kariel only uses Dragonskin.

35 lbs.? Damn! You're going to be stronger than all of us! Didn't mean to jump in your grave (as my grandmother would say), but I thought I would add my two cents as I asked Kariel on fb.
Please! Fill us in on the details! It's a marvelous looking tail! I'm so excited for you!

Wow. I like the differing colors on the front and back. Gives it a lot of character. The fan pattern on the fluke is very well done. It's looks like butterfly wings mixed with a flower. All together, it reminds me of my grandmother's garden. Excuse me if I ask, but could I see more pictures? It is very unique.

*blush* thanks!! I'm awfully proud that it came out so well. Tritons Guard, I posted more pics in the tailmaking thread. The colors are a bit washed out by the sun in this pic. It's actually darker and more copper, and the blue is bright turquoise.
