Hey Athena,
I am getting a Mahina and would love to create a tail like yours, do you have a temp attachment to the fin? how do you stop it from rolling up your legs? Would love some ideas :)
Wow, I did it, read through all 138 pages of tails.
I made these between 2007-2008 for various parties in SF. They weren't swimable! The flukes are made out of up cycled couch cushions that I carved and made foot pockets in so we could flip them around. Gosh those were fun times! But of course that was before having all the kids, and settling down ;)
The gold tail is a latex fabric, and has a very cute attached top with keyhole stomach and back area, very pinup like. The Mahina monofin isn't sealed in so I can walk in it. I just made this one last month.
I am working up a design for a silicone tail, and can hardly wait for hat to be done so I can post here again :)

It's pretty tight around my ankles, I made fluke shaped gold net fins, they are hard to see in the photo. They flop over the monofin from either side which pulls it over the edge and stops it from rolling up.
im going to see if I can find a better pic.

Yes the fluke is MUCH bigger than I thought it would be! It just got here today, so I haven't swam in it yet. Pool regulations here are very strict so I won't get a chance until June.
But it's VERY heavy and puts a lot of strain on my ankles. So I'll be starting to do more exercises to make sure I don't hurt myself. But otherwise I really love the bigness! I feel like I can curl up in it!

Because of the Neoprene base, there is some drag but I found that to be a plus because it forces me to swim slower (and thus calmer, I tend to swim too fast and waste energy). The fluke doesn't give any drag at all. It's an partially open fluke so I can take my monofin out easily if I want to.
@Momo I love the colors! :D Really looks good on you!

Is it a fully closed tail? So you can't take your monofin out? My fluke has a zipper in it so that it's still sort of closed, but it has openings on both sides of the zipper as to reduce the drag. It really makes a difference :)

After scrapping and restarting my silicone tail Wednesday the 15th and finishing Friday the 17th I went out in it today (Saturday 18th) at the Wizard World Sacramento convention. I won best in show! Sooooo thrilled with my first silicone project! Actually it's my first clay modeling project too. We had an incredible time and meet awesome people. Love my tail, and all the hard work that went into it. Hopefully I will get some underwater photos soon because this things is amazing, and I can hardly wait to make more. Pffff whatever all the mers with silicone tails have it WAY harder! Having 65+ lbs strapped onto your body is really difficult! Again, this tail will probably be closer to 17lbs, given the help of water, it'll feel more like 7! Swimming will be no problem, i hope. However admittedly i have not tested it yet. Mostly due to the fluke not being done.

Mermaid Caspiana, I'm afraid there's not much you can do to keep the Mylar from detaching from the sequins. Latex well make you look like Daryl Hannah in Splash when they had her in the tank and she was wasting away. Robert Short, the sfx/tailmaker told us that's what he used to get that effect.
Unfortunately, that's the nature of iridescent sequins. The coating peels off the pvc sequin. You're probably better off going back and hand sewing the sequins to your substrate (powermesh). Otherwise they will continue to peel off. Sorry!
Mermaid Athena, you look amazing! That's so cool that you got to meet Shatner! What did he think? I LOVE that purple on black!

I was always a bit curious as to how they managed to produce such a realistic ick-like effect to show how poorly captivity and despair had treated Madison (I even mentioned that when making her gallery for the Disney Wiki: http://disney.wikia.com/wiki/Madison). I can see you asked Mr. Short all the right questions! :mermaid kiss:

I can tell you it is a FULL fabric tail because I asked her about it myself. The Merfin is rather flexible. You have to fold the Merfin in half to get it inside the tail skin. I made myself one not long ago.

It is nice. I don't know about Mermaid Leina's skins but I know mine is a challenge to get mine over the Merfin. I think it's worth it though. I have skins I made for my FinFun monofin too and they are open at the bottom. The monofin shows occasionally and to me it loses a bit of the "realness" when you see that.

The gaping is unavoidable if your monofin isn't flexible enough to fit through the small ankle area of a tail skin. I played around with a skin that was detachable at the ankle but I found it came apart when swimming. I had been eyeing the Merfin for some time because it was bigger and I felt it was a better balance for my plus size. When i saw Leina's tails I knew the Merfin fit all my desires.

Its time I guess, Here is the Unboxing video of my tail from GotMermaid.net Yes I cried, like a baby (Happy mush ball here) I am so happy i have her. I have to upload the first swim and the side by side video between Tsunami (my new tail) and Blue Fish (my old fishbutts tails) this tail is alot higher up than my Fish butts tail (which slid down a ton, lol my pod can attest to that)
*There are significant differences between the two, and the New tail is individually scaled, not sheet scaled like my fishbutts,
*The fluke is glued in place to my uncut leader fin monofin (well there are small teeny tiny drainage channels in the body and on the fluke just in case) - Fishbutts was a bubbling dragging fluke mess (which wasn't sealed properly)
*They used my hubby's dorsal/secondary dorsal fin design and created it for me, I wanted to keep a little similarity of tattered fins to my old design and they gladly did. Fish butts side fins came off not long after use.
*I couldn't decide between heel fins or pectoral fins and i ended up with pectoral fins. The heel fins were an added surprise.
*They also have a small strap behind the knee to help aid in pulling up the tail, there's a prototype waistband in the waist area which is removable (because I have thyroid problems and i have YO-YO weight loss and gain)
*The black edges in the tail have a small bit of color changing paint or pigment on them (Richard knows which one) and the entire tail Is so gosh darn sparkly. Im so freaking happy, as you can see.
I waited a long time for this tail, Some of it was my fault because I had design issues.. i got over excited and changed things quite a bit. Thank Neptune these people are amazing! They sent me updates via photos and little snaps which was awesome. And they just blew my expectations away.
So here's My Lovely Tsunami

I waited a long time for this tail, Some of it was my fault because I had design issues.. i got over excited and changed things quite a bit. Thank Neptune these people are amazing! They sent me updates via photos and little snaps which was awesome. And they just blew my expectations away.

Things to be done:
1) put metal scales on the fluke
2) reinforce the bendy areas
3) admit defeat and put in a real monofin
4) add more flippy floppy fins!!!

What a beautiful tail. Can I ask how much weight sequins add to the tail? I love your individual scale tail, but because of the weight I have only been making fabric tails. I love the color blending on Rowan,s tail!
Thanjs everyone! She tried it out in the pool and it swims great!
Lilyrose fish, it's actually not all that heavy at all. I haven't weighed it but I used probably around 1.5 lbs of sequins. The neoprene is really light too. The monofin is heavy, probably 4-5 lbs.

Me - "Wait, what? . . . Oh . . . apparently yes."

I didn't really document the build. I saw MerQueen Nerissa's (http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?8936-My-Adventures-in-Silicone/page8) tail and did the same scale over powermesh thing (I'm not sure who to properly attribute the method to).

I'm leaving on vacation today untill the 16th and I decided I wanted to take a tail. The problem being that we will be by the sea so I wanted something visible with a strong Monofin. Neither of my 3 tails had both of those qualities. Inevitably yesterday I went "eh, I've been planing this tail anyway and have everything I need" so...

Whats funny is that the tips are fine. They are pulling in at the curve between spikes. And when i full extend one another one of them will shrink up. Ive had this problem with spandex before. I ended up sewing in boning on that one. I will try some stay stitching just at the curves when i am home. Hopefully that does enough. Thanks :3

The tail skin is from Magictail of Germany. They have other similar tails too in different colors. I added the fins and lengthened the fluke. I love their tail skin colors but their monofins don't give much propulsion. It is very hard to move forward doing a nice undulation. Instead with this tail, I find myself having to bend at the knees and give a very pronounced strong kick from the knees to move forward. It looks so beautiful in photos, but for video I am going to retrofit the magictail skin to fit my mahina.

1.) MYLAR! Oh my God it's been ages and I could not for the life of me think of the term. Haha
2.) I just now saw this reply. Lol Luckily I found a solution that has worked literal wonders since then. Hehe But thanks for the input anyway! <3

Wow. I thought I had updated my tail and the whole sequins issue. Haha Oops. Anyway, I used silicone as a coating and it's literally exactly what I was looking for. It's worked wonderfully and the only trouble spots are where I got the silicone too thin. Other than that its so amazing and I'm so in love with it. <3 ;) So here are a few of my favorite shots from my Myrtle Beach Photo shoot a the beginning of the month. :)

I finally got to go swim in my fabric tail yesterday! I have a couple in the works bc my DIL is a costumer and is helping to make me some lovely tail covers. I have a Mahina, so I knew it may be hard to find fitted covers on the open market. I did decide to try a Mertailor Ecotail, leggings, and bra top. I thought they looked great together yesterday!

I have never inserted a pic here, I am going to try one, and see if I figured it out before I try to post more! I recently did some work on mine to for my new mahina fin. The sequins color shift from green to purple and I found four way stretch spandex that does the same!

So many beautiful tails! Coyote, I love your tail! I adore Selwyn tasks and I love the cover on your fin!
Edit typo: sequin tails, not Selwyn tasks.
