Everyone's tails look so amazing! Here is the first tail I ever made. I think I made it back in 2006 when I was in high school but I recently found it in the back of my closet and put it on for this photo. I made it out of my grandmother's spandex pant leg because both of my legs could fit into one, and the fluke is painted vinyl. I swam in it though it doesn't propel me at all due to no monofin. Back then I had no idea about tailmaking and just went for it, so to keep the fluke rigid I had inserted pieces of a cut up wire hanger that would poke me when I wore it. This photo is probably from the last time it will ever be worn as I'm in the process of getting ready to make my first silicone tail. I'm also making a new fabric tail with a monofin that will look similar to this one so I have a tail to swim in while I'm working on the silicone tail.

That black sequin mesh is just amazing sparkles... Where did you buy it? Do you remember how much it was? I saw similar one way stretch with dangley sequins on it on sale at Joann Fabrics for $50.00 US per yard.... yikes!!!! and that was on sale! Would you share?

@Photine: Well, the color is just paint on spandex. for the shape, the fluke is actually two swim fins taped together with some thin plastic extensions to either side. (I make everything on the cheap because I'm a poor art student)

@MerMarla: I bought it at JoAnn actually! It's probably the same stuff you saw, but it was on sale for 40% off and I bought the end of the roll. I got 2 and a half yards for $30, still haven't used all of it.

This. One thing that has surprised me a little about the community is that, for some mers, super realistic silicone tails that cost the same amount as a weeklong tropical vacation seem to be the end-all, be-all of feeling like they've earned their scales as a mermaid. Like it's needed to feel legit. Some people seem to want one of those to be their first tail, even though that's not recommended. So they're willing to wait years before they even wear a tail and learn to swim in one. I would think it would be super important to get or make a starter tail or two before you spend a few years saving for a 14kg behemoth that you may need a couple other people to put on to begin with. Not that I think there's anything necessarily wrong with that - whatever frosts your cookies. It's sort of a nonthreatening, benign elite in-community custom. Those exist in every community.

Everything was handmade, even the insides, the rivets and cogs with the exception of the store bought corset, the goggles and the necklace. It's made of micro-suede and a leather type fabric. All hand stitched and my fingers were killing me by the end of it! I'm sure I could swim in it but for obvious reasons, because of the material, I wouldn't chance it.

I wanted a tail that I could walk around in since I attend many conventions and events in the New England area and sometimes being immobile isn't an option. I also wanted to be able to change tops around to make different mermaid looks. For instance, purple shell top with red hair....Ariel. This actually got started because people were pestering me to dress up as Ariel. Anyways if I wanted, say a pirate look, I could easily throw on some pirate gear from the waist up plus a hat and I could be a Pirate Mermaid. You get the picture. ;)

Ok so that's it for now. I am working on a few others but nothing really pic worthy just yet.

I love this tail, and the entire outfit. It's so incredibly well done. What I love most about it, actually, is the way it (to me) looks like you're a mermaid with a protective bit of armor over your fluke. Because life in the sea is rough. This isn't a dog-eat-dog world, anyone who knows the sea knows, this is a fish-eat-fish world, and you're ready for it. lol

Here is my ultra fabulous new silicone tail from MerNation!!! I'm so thrilled with how it turned out, and the folks at MerNation are such a pleasure to work with. This one joins my homemade spandex tail and my FishButts latex/neoprene tail in my happy little tail family, and I love them all :) This will be my last tail - that is, unless I get creative with the stack of neoprene sitting in my guestroom and make another one.

As for the full silicone vs. latex/neoprene, well, in my case the cons about the Fishbutts tail are that it is too big in the waist (which I can probably fix but have just been tying it up with a netting belt) and also at the tip edge of the fluke one or two of the water drainage holes is too wide which makes the yellow of the monofin show through (again, fixable...just haven't gotten to it). My main issue with this type of tail is that the latex is VERY sticky, which makes it hard to store and you have to be careful what you put it on and lean it against...it bothers me a lot actually. Also since I want to be doing more gigs with the public, I know there are quite a few people out there with latex allergies, so that scares me a little with everyone wanting to touch the tail.

However, it is very light-weight, easy to put on (no lubrication needed), and is quite comfortable both in and out of the water. It's nice to swim in, and if the fit on mine were better it would obviously improve the feel during swimming. Until I fix the big waist issue I am always fidgeting with the waist/belt area.

The full silicone is quite heavy to haul around...unnervingly heavy if you've never schlepped one around before, which is probably the main con. It does need some type of lubrication or water to put on, and so for dry gigs it's probably not the most super practical thing in the world.

However, it does not have that ultra stickiness factor...it attracts hair and dust when dry but will not stick to itself or rip out pieces of wood or yoga mat like my latex one has done. The feel of it is different... it has the raised scales as opposed to the textured latex (not sure what to call it, but the texture is more indented into the latex as opposed to raised/molded)...seems much more durable than the latex which has a tendency to scratch and damage much more easily. The fluke is sealed so there is no hint of the monofin that's in there (the drainage holes are small and placed elsewhere on the fluke). Plus, the fit is like a second skin, and I don't feel the need to keep checking or pulling on the waist while swimming. It also doesn't make your backside float while swimming like neoprene has a tendency to do.

So those are my main personal pros and cons :cool:

I think the seams are done well from what I've seen of other tails...I've certainly seen some high price, high quality silicone tails from other makers which had seams that were far less well hidden, but I've not seen enough tails up close in person to really make a comparison.

Let's say they are hidden and blended well enough for my taste...in some lights you can see them more than others...most of the photos I've had taken so far the seams are not noticeable or visible at all. Plus I got it slightly darker on the seams to add in the blending effect. Here's a quick tail that I'm making to swim in. I was asked to come appear at Liquid Planet in Candia, NH on the 27th and I needed a tail that could be in water, since my Steampunk tail isn't a tail that I'd attempt in water due to it being made with micro-suede and a leather like fabric.

So here it is so far. I still need to make a monofin and I plan on adding some lavender sparkle along the sides for a little decoration. I hope the kids at the park will like it! Eep! :$

It depends on the job really, I can make you a simple hand painted tail for $200 or make a latex/sequin hybrid tail for 1,500 and anything in between. I don't work with silicon at the moment though and I won't be using Alex plus either, I would be working with special fx latex

Kakarotte, I really hope you get your issue resolved :-/ your tail is really lovely and unique! Mine took me an hour to put on the first time and I struggled soooo much I almost thought I would never get it on. But I did, and later I tried Astroglide and that really helped with getting my feet into it. Maybe that would help you?

Bahahaha! I got the drugstore brand so it's a bit less obvious unless you look close. It looks like it could just be lotion or something. I did almost leave it in the locker room showers one time and had to go back and get it lest the poor innocent YMCA staff find it and go :jawdrop:

Everything was handmade, even the insides, the rivets and cogs with the exception of the store bought corset, the goggles and the necklace. It's made of micro-suede and a leather type fabric. All hand stitched and my fingers were killing me by the end of it! I'm sure I could swim in it but for obvious reasons, because of the material, I wouldn't chance it.

I wanted a tail that I could walk around in since I attend many conventions and events in the New England area and sometimes being immobile isn't an option. I also wanted to be able to change tops around to make different mermaid looks. For instance, purple shell top with red hair....Ariel. This actually got started because people were pestering me to dress up as Ariel. Anyways if I wanted, say a pirate look, I could easily throw on some pirate gear from the waist up plus a hat and I could be a Pirate Mermaid. You get the picture. ;)

Ok so that's it for now. I am working on a few others but nothing really pic worthy just yet.

That truly is the single most bad-ass tail I have ever seen. Great work!

Wow Caltuna, this is a lovely tail! What did you use for your flukes? How did you make it to remove the flukes, so that the portion of your tail that covers your feet doesn't let go? I would like to figure out a process, so I only need the one monofin/flukes, and use different skins. I love your idea!

What did you use for your flukes? How did you make it to remove the flukes, so that the portion of your tail that covers your feet doesn't let go?
I use a clear/see-through monofin made from polypropylene.
The fluke part is completely separate and fastened with many (diaphanous) press-buttons :p
Same goes for the end of the tail which covers the footpocket.

It's actually a lot more work to make the fluke separate, but I couldn't resist having both a white mertail, and snaketail.
I did the same with my green tails.
Have still to paint those a bit though, they look a tad plain otherwise.

OK! So my first tail is complete! :) It's not perfect by any means, but it works and I love it. I know SO MUCH from making this first prototype it isn't even funny. I'm going to (almost) immediately start on my next one. I have so many new ideas.

It's partial silicone and spandex in Appx 1/2 inch thick layers ( I tried more, but you had problems seeing the print of the spandex underneath. The effect was achieved, although I probably wont go with a printed spandex next time, I'll just paint it myself.
The monofin is completely home-made as well with fiberglass and rubber swim-shoes ( which are murder to get on lol)

I'm so flippin' excited! I get to in ally posting this tread! Alas I hall wait for my photos hoot at the beach. We are leaving tomorrow night at like 3am. Lol. Gonna get to Myrtle Beach at around 3 pm and hopefully be on the beach around 6-8. But idk. And idk when I'll be putting my tail on throughout the trip. hehe not long! Only a couple weeks actually. this was it's second swim ever! It did take a lot of time though. It was a special collaboration between Morticia and I and a lot of thought/time went into it :) Hand painting is no joke! She did an incredible job! It's seamless!! yes its neoprene! I know.... wizardry. only thing i could determine. glad we are all on the same page about that. LOL i love it though! It fits like a second skin!! and its fast, even with the long flowing fluke! I'm built for graceful speed!! ZOOOOOOOOOM

Where did you get your tail?

It's a blue magictail. You can order one at Magictail.de. It's a company based in Germany, they are really good at making realistic fabric tails.

13710Almost done! I still need to make some minor adjustments and add a waistband. This tail is nylon/spandex with a finis tempo monofin. Also, I used velcro at the bottom to make it easy to get to the monofin (not sure if I like the look yet or not).

Just gave my tail a repaint; made it much greener (it had a turquoise hue in some lights previously) and then shaded all the edges and fluke with darker green. I realized after that it might look like my monofin poking through but its not, its the shading (well it does a little but that's not the shape of it lol)

Thanks, I love love the colors on the tail, I bought it just seeing the fluke and the top part by the waist and that's pretty much it, and then after she shipped it I realized the back was the crazy colors and there was all that detail and I was super stoked. :-) I feel like all my tails turn out rainbow-y.
Blondie-Thanks, I had to cut it and have had a blast with this short pixie hair, but I'm ready to grow it out again and do some cool mermaid things in it!!
