Silly PearlieMae! How would I swim in that??

Once this small migraine goes away, I'll start working on covering one of my new bras for swimming.

Oh, you don't have to swim in it! That's a tail for sitting in the shallows, drinking adult beverages from coconut shells with tiny umbrellas. ;)

Gave me an idea.... She could have a coconut shell bra for swimming in to match her aloha tail. I think with enough varnish/sealer on the coconuts they'd be swimmable.

I had lots of fabric leftover, so instead of keeping it away and letting it collect dust, I made another tail.

Aloha Tail 2.

Its also got pocket hole, and spine things that I sewn with thread.

Those "spine things" do give it a more fin-like appearance!

Oh, and I really like your new avatar pic; it's gorgeous and metallic, with a bit of a rainbow-fiery feel!

I once modeled for hobbleskirt.com, and I must say that I am reminded a bit of one of those skirts, which at times were so tight that they were essentially walking mermaid tails. I quite like the look, though I must also say that it is more fun to be a mermaid.... :mermaid kiss:

nope, I made sure it's easy to walk in.
I like it better than wearing pants, and it's pretty warm too which is a huge plus where I live.

and Michelle, yes I know being a "real" mermaid is more fun, but I don't have the luxury of swimming 24/7 :p

Do you have a pattern for that scallop?

It's the scale (crocodile) stitch.
No specific pattern, I improvise all my sewing and tailmaking depending on what colours I have etc.
My new diving tail (which will enable me to swim better and no longer need a weight belt) is made similarly, but it's not finished yet:

Went swimming at the beach today - first time in public! I got a lot of weird looks from passers-by, and an ogle from a couple of kids in a boat ;)
Image heavy, sorry~
I increased the contrast and upped the colours a little to try to get the tail closer to how it looks in real life. This thing glows with colour when it's in the water!

I'm making weird faces in a lot of these but the tail looks nice at least, haha.

Yes it is! It has a neoprene layer underneath and then a layer of spandex and then a layer of mesh. But I ended up taking off the mesh and using it for side fins. :) The fluke is hand painted.

Thanks michelle, I really enjoyed swimming in a tank. Much more difficult that I thought it would be but so fun!

MermaidMichelle
04-15-2014, 12:39 PM
You are quite welcome! I imagine that the close-quarters of a tank could limit one's ability to swim around, especially with a large fluke, and it looks like you had company!

Hi everyone here are a few pics of my tails I've created over the last couple of years. I have used a bunch of different materials as I experiment with each one ;)
This one is mostly just spandex: http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/04/17/a9uzepy6.jpg

Then I realised pretty quickly that the shiny spandex gets worn down by the sand, so I used the same type of material but covered it in clear silicone as a protective barrier: http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/04/17/8aby5use.jpg

Then I got pregnant and fat so I that tail no longer fit. I used the same fluke but changed the body of the tail, I also added a scale pattern: http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/04/17/neqybava.jpg

After that I created a full neoprene one without the spandex cover and it has a new fluke:http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/04/17/uqenerav.jpg

it was quite heavy, but my hope it would act like a millstone, drag me down and let me slither over the poolbottom like a benthos shark were dashed!

it was, just as expected, a whole world of drag though.
so while nice looking, probably not for swimming :p

now debating whether to make my 3d white dragon tail as planned, or just concentrate on tails I can speedily swim in.

I agree; it seems that, like your fellow French merfolk Claire, "everything in your world is blue."

I know, eh? I continue to be reminded of an old episode of Dinosaurs (an early-1990s sitcom similar to the Flintstones only live-action and performed by actors wearing animatronic dinosaur costumes) in which the teenage girl Charlene is anxious for her tail to grow in. At one point she orders a huge package in the mail...which turns out to be an artificial tail!

OK; it seems a couple of you do understand!

Mermaid Isabel, I too am reminded of AVATAR: Not the James Cameron One; That Came Later. In particular, whenever Raven mentions her new Koi Fluke to me I think of the yin-yang koi lung fish of the moon at the end of the first season. They didn't take too well to fire, though....

Mermaid Pickles, I imagine you would have been quite young when Dinosaurs ended its run twenty years ago; you are still a very young lovely little mermaid! On the subject of koi, one thing I do like about Pokemon a lot are the Magikarp. I remember when I first saw them as a teenager I thought to myself, I would be SO nice to my Magikarp; they are SO useless that I just KNOW they turn into something amazing.... When I played I grabbed multiple Magikarp and cared for them lovingly until they evolved. They are just so cool, it's:

Love nurture love coddle love nurture DRAGON ARMY!

Here is a prototype for my daughter. The deal was if she could swim with it I would make a tail for her that night. Well she loved it.

http://s228.photobucket.com/user/XCSTADS/media/Mermaid%20-%20Selkie/IMAG1788.jpg.html

With the fins I had at the house I opted to work on a selkie tail(Selkie being seal like thus two independent flippers, which would make a mono fin an actual mer-tail). This is us (her actually) trying on and sewing the tail.

http://s228.photobucket.com/user/XCSTADS/media/Mermaid%20-%20Selkie/IMAG1812.jpg.html

http://s228.photobucket.com/user/XCSTADS/media/Mermaid%20-%20Selkie/IMAG1842.jpg.html

Unfortunately being my first full tail, I thought the suit liner would have been great as it was...

Nope it was see thru. So a quick sketch to show Emma Isabella (daughter) the design intent....
http://s228.photobucket.com/user/XCSTADS/media/Mermaid%20-%20Selkie/MERMAIDTALE.png.html
And I whipped out my airbrush and started spraying.

Here is the final product of that ordeal.

The dorsal fin/ribbon was dyed, but the swimsuit material doesn't hold well. Lessons learned were that the paint fades a little but really takes the elasticity out(and seemed to shrink the fabric) so I'll cut longer next time I airbrush paint on to a tail. I would still love to find dyes that will hold on to swimsuit material(or I guess I'll just make custom orders from a material manufacturer). The tails are designed to have the fins inserted on the bottom after the tail is put on the legs(for ease, they roll up like socks and you pop your fin on). The tip of the fluke is not sewn closed completely, this allows water in the tail to drain without bulging. Next project is a monotail/mer-tail project. I'll post step by step photos if interested. I bought a monofin from Wave fins, I love it. Lastly is that there is such thing as white swimwear/activeware that is opaque, should have gotten it.

edit: apparently I need to look at how to link photos..... you can right click and open in new tab/window to view. Sorry....

it's crochet, just like the newer krait tail I made last.

that one went so well I made the white one right after.
You can check my tailmaking thread (crazy crochet tail) where I detailed the process if you're interested.

Thanks, gang! There will be a layer in between the fluke halves, so it will be translucent, not transparent...I don't want the edges of the monofin to show.

And hopefully, yes, I will be taking orders soon!

Do you have an idea of how much you will be charging for the tails?

That is very impressive; transparent or translucent! It reminds me of the wings of Dragonflyer from the Sectaurs toy line of the 1980s; does anyone remember it?

Thanks, everyone! :mermaid kiss:

Michelle, I based them on cicada wings...my favorite bug! My daughter might remember the Sectaurs, but I don't offhand.

"In the imaginal and dream realms of the Greek mythology variety, cicadas were originally human, but they were easily enchanted humans. The Muses, who were fairy-nymph-goddess like beings, played such lovely music for them one summer that they danced all through the day and night. They danced so long and so wholeheartedly, that they died without realizing it. The muses took pity on them, and granted them new lives as creatures who never needed to sleep or eat, and would only sing all day and night. This is when they became cicadas."

Fifi, Considering the amount of labor that goes into making a tail like this, it won't be inexpensive. With the built-in top and custom monofin (with translucent fluke), probably starting at around $3000 US. It's a lot of money for a lot of work, I know, but considering, for instance, that each individual scale can have upwards of 5 separate processes to achieve a certain effect...well, you can see from my tailmaking thread how much goes into the making! :phew: :D

I do love making them, though!

The scaled top is attached to the tail at the sides and the neck strap slips over your head like a halter top.

Hmmmm...I was thinking of offering components so people could build their own...you would have so many options! I will have to do a cost analysis.

Soon as I get this one finished, I want to start on a new fluke design I've been thinking about. :)

These are monofins from Fin Fun, covered with tailskins I made from shiny lycra.

23628
Here's Rowan's gorgeous Fin Fun printed spandex tail, matched with their swimsuits.

I have to say, you may not get a lot of propulsion from the Fin Fun monofin, but their mermaid scale print is astoundingly beautiful in the water!

As someone said (at the risk of crossing Disney Princesses), "It's all so magical...."

That's one thing I might regret about my own childhood: I didn't spend nearly enough of it as a fish....

2368423685 The back and the front of my very first tail. I just finished sewing everything, It's a plain Lycra fabric tail. The purple is lighter than it looks and I did some fin detail work on it. I haven't swam in it yet but I'm gonna wear a plain black bikini bra. I'm thinking on adding some scrap purple fabric around the edges at the top to stop from the continuous black effect the bra has with the top of the tail. Any opinions from more experienced mers? (btw sorry about the random leg in the pic)

MermaidMichelle
08-24-2014, 11:14 PM
It looks like you won't be a tail-less mermaid much longer! The scrap purple would go well with the top, though the simple bikini bra is also a reasonable option; a mermaid should think about whether the biologically "fish" part of her extends above the waist at all, and if so she needs to be able to explain why only the bra area is also fish-like! :mermaid kiss:
