It looks like you won't be a tail-less mermaid much longer! The scrap purple would go well with the top, though the simple bikini bra is also a reasonable option; a mermaid should think about whether the biologically "fish" part of her extends above the waist at all, and if so she needs to be able to explain why only the bra area is also fish-like! :mermaid kiss:

True! And good point, I think I might hand sew in the purple but for now I just wanna find somewhere to swim in it :D

Wow! You are one sparkly little fishy beneath the waves! :mermaid kiss: I also like the metallic look of the seashell bra!

Thanks! That metallic look comes from about 5 bottles of nail polish. The bra underneath is actually black.

Ooooooh! It's very PotC! How's it swim?

Mermaid Wesley
08-25-2014, 10:33 PM
It's great! Not fast though. The extension is very floppy and if I swim faster than a graceful 'walk' so to speak, it causes a ton of drag by flopping funny. It's pretty underwater though, very fluid and smooth. And believe it or not I extended it with zip ties and gorilla tape and it's held up great! Especially after I left it in a hot car and the adhesive melted a little. :)

So you all know I'm working on a tail, I'll post pictures when it's done, but funny story, my dad is the only one who knows I'm making it (outside of my social networking and I haven't even mentioned it on Facebook) and when it's done I'm going to take it for a swim and have my dad bring my mom to where I'm swimming. Otherwise I'd get a lot of negativity.

MermaidMichelle
08-27-2014, 01:26 PM
So you're just going to "come out" to her by having her see you swimming as a big fish? That could work; if she is something of a naysayer she could be sufficiently impressed by the final product to think more positively of you as a mermaid in future! I wish and pray for the best! :mermaid kiss:

Pretty much. Even if she doesn't approve I'm an adult and I do what I want! Haha and she'll probably complain mostly about the money and I'll just point out that I didn't pay 600+ for it and only made it for ~150 purely from etsy profits.

Mine has heel fins...

*pats self on the head*

There is always that temptation to add heel fins, for even in Splash! one can see Madison/Daryl's heels very obviously, however both Merin and I have elected to forego them. In my case, it is because I don't want too much distraction from the thigh area (you'll see why). In Merin's case, I presume it is because adding heel fins would be less accurate for a Peacock Mantis Shrimp design....

It was partly accuracy bit mostly I've not been much of a fan of heel fins in general. Merbella Studios does such a good job of hiding heels so it wasn't a concern of mine. Still, love seeing other mers get creative about hiding heels!

To not become too repeat-image-offensive, I shall respond to Mermaid Merin in text form!

Merin, even with its deteriorated quality, that tail still looks quite fine. The dorsal in particular reminds me of those fighting fish one sees packaged individually and makes you look very much like an authentic fish in terms of movement, too.

Also, that choice of musical accompaniment took me back to the halcyon days of 1999! Ah, S Club 7: Simon Fuller's vengeance upon the Spice Girls in the days before American Idol....

Hahaha! When I asked Diona what sort of music she wanted with it, she had no idea, so I started playing all of my older, upbeat music, and she loved the song and the message (about rising above trials and just being yourself no matter what naysayers think).

Thank you! There is one shot where you can clearly see where the paint was not added / is wearing off but it still moves beautifully in the water. She had to be careful with her powerful kicks though, because both the dorsal and another side fin fall off more with each swim. Still, it's got some beautiful form and flow in the water! Very happy with the look in water, despite the physical flaws and in some cases limitations they put on the mermaids. Once we get it fixed up, it'll be amazing!

Thank you! That's the disappointing thing about Mertailor; while his tails move wonderfully and look grand, they have too many issues. Had the tail been perfect I would have considered ordering from him for one of my future personal tails as I love the flow and fishlike movement. Just disappointing. Still, it really is beautiful, especially in color, and we are happy enough with it for the time being!

Please ignore my messy room and horrid picture quality, but this is my first and only tail as of the moment made by Lori Watts of OnceUponAMermaid. Its custom designed and high waisted with a matching top that tucks inside to make it look like its one solid piece. Around the waist is tulle flared out like a peplum skirt, with a matching tulle down the back as a dorsal fin. The only problem is that the monofin falls off my feet way too easily, probably because I am a derp at swimming like a mermaid.

Tetra, maybe you can glue velcro to the inside of the straps, then glue the other sides to a pair of neoprene socks. Then always wear those socks when you go swimming.

I've seen a video, where a little girl has the kiddie mermaid fin and someone had cut off the strap and replaced them with neoprene straps for each foot.

The additions to my black tail. It's pretty much an open fluke so I can slip it on and over the fin. Looks a little rough but it looks great under water. Hoping to get a chance to swim in it again, the first test was awesome except that I found my tail was too loose. After measuring my waist again and weighing myself to see if the fabric had just stretched I found I lost close to 10lbs since I first made this tail at the start of the summer! So another 20 to go and I'll be looking to order a tail from a tail maker.

And for those with small feeties, a size 6/small competitor is a good fit. I was nervous and thought it would be too big cause I'm a size 5-5.5 in women's but it's nice. A bit uncomfortable as all monofins are, but it's okay to an extent.

And I have wide feet if that should help anyone with short and wide feet.

I'm a size C. Basically I brushed spirit gum all over the back of the sea shells then I laid on my back and held them in place for about 5 minutes. I had my boyfriend tie the net around me really tight! The shells are a bit too heavy for spirit gum alone but it does help keep them from shifting. Next time I'm going glue the net to the shells to keep that from shifting. Otherwise it was a really great way to hold the shells on.

Finally finished my Summer Tail! I call it, Trout Fish.

Closed fluke with elastic waistband. Fin goes in through the waist. Its baggy at the ankles area as I tried to accommodate those two weird ridges on the sides of the MerFin. I didn't do so for my other tail, and the fabric ripped at the V of the merfin after many times of taking the fin in and out.

I just got my very first mermaid tail today!! I am so excited to show it to you all.

It's a mertailor partial silicone tail, which is the kind that comes in two parts (a solid silicone fluke and a silicone/neoprin tail skin that goes over it). The two parts can be worn together or the fluke can be worn separately.

I was able to take it to the pool at my university tonight and the student lifeguards were so excited to see it. One of the lifeguards was actually one of my former students so that made for a pretty funny conversation. I only swam with the fluke tonight because I wanted to get used to it and make sure I could swim well enough before I added the tail. It was a great success. I was even able to take it into the diving well and play around for a while after I got use to it in the lap lanes.

I really love it - the color is beautiful and the tail itself fits like a glove. I know it will likely stretch as I use it, but at least right now it's TIGHT (which is how I wanted it!) and comes up nice and high to my natural waist, which is how I measured for it. It's also super heavy...it was REALLY hard for me to lift up the fluke when I was in the tail dry (pretty comical - I was lying on the floor like a limp noodle)! But in the water it was perfect - with the fluke alone in the pool I was completely neutrally bouyant (I'm usually positively bouyant) so that was pretty cool.

I will post more pics and info once I swim in the full tail - should be later this week!

Emma that looks beautiful! It looks so natural when it moves like that, the fluke I mean. I've never swam with them separately so I actually don't know how that feels, I haven't done that cause in our swimming hall there's always children at the same turn who have seen me as a mermaid and I don't wanna break the illusion... :D But that looked so awesome that I might want to try, so eagerly waiting for your swimming videos with the full tail :)

Emmadives
12-03-2014, 01:26 AM
Thank you, Nerissa! If you decide to try them separate, let me know and I can give you my tip for fastening the strap - it was a little tricky at first but I figured out a way of doing it by criss-crossing that kept it in place. My pool is at a university so everyone there is older, but I can't wait to see how the little kids like it at my outdoor pool this summer!

Here's one pic of my tail, otherwise is exactly same Emma has but there's also this custom color scheme, which of course cost extra.. :D But I love it, I love the colors and everything. I only had to modify the size, two days ago I took it to this guy who fixes all kinds of industry fabrics and other stuff and he took it in from seams like 3-4 inches together. First the tail felt like it's correct size but then I noticed it really flapped a lot, and it was a bit too high also so I cut 4 rows of scales away. I also peeled the neoprin's top layer off about an inch down from the waist so it now looks a lot better when on :)

Merenneito Nerissa
12-04-2014, 04:53 AM
Oh and the color scheme was first described by me like a way lamer than there, and then I noticed that there's other kinds of options too, that you can even plan the whole thing by yourself, and I sent a mail for eric if he could still do it how I want it, and tried to describe smthn I like and I just got an answer that no can do, we stick in a first plan we get and that's it. And I felt so sad about it and send mails and everything and in the end Eric did that... And I was just amazed what a wizard he is, those colors oh gosh... And he did the stripes and everything, I think he had a vision from the story I told, that I'm going to be the northernmost mermaid in the world and I live in a capital of Lapland and so on, so I got a perfect northern lights - tail! I love it! It's nickname is Aurora <3 ( from aurora borealis :) )

I might need to trim down the metal connector on one side of the fluke because it's poking up a bit and I don't want it to damage the skin.

well the neoprin was so thick, that it was lil bit visible from waist, so I cut the upper layer off, now it's a lot better :) And I want still to clue the tail skin on the fluke, cause now when they're separate curious lil ones can stretch the edge of the skin and then there's a lots of things visible which needs explanations-like those metal things which attaches the strap to fluke and well, my ankles and legs... :D :D I think it'd be a bit easier to just clue skin and fluke together than trying to figure out that what tha heck to explain for those kids... :D

Easy, just say you got hit by a boat swimming to this pool and your fins fell off. And tell them to help you look out for a vet.

As for seeing what's inside your tail, easily explained again... They're your insides, just like land people have squashy red insides, mermaids have shiny metal insides.

12-07-2014, 01:16 PM
Yea, but its just a metal link, I don't know, of course I'd say somethn like that but I'd like to glue it still :D I also think that it helps for til not stretching so much, cause the fluke is just so heavy and every time you lift it wrong, and well, every time you swim tail skin stretches. There's also another problem, there's this very strong and small string betveen the ends of tail skin which keeps it still around the fluke and it will eventually rip the fluke from middle of it and I think glueing would solve that.

Merenneito Nerissa
12-09-2014, 05:41 AM
I know right! The flukes are just amazing :) And well, the whole tails too :D But yea, I think I could avoid the ripping by glueing those two parts together, cause I really don't need to use the fluke separately. I'm also trying to figure out a way to hide my heels, I've been thinking some kind of a neoprene "bag" or tube around my ankles and heels, and it's be very thick and straight on the part which goes on top of my heels.. :D :D I know this sounds crazy but I'll still try to do something like that :D I definitely will post how I succeed (or don't succeed!) in here :)

Nerissa that's a great tip about the sugru! I'd never heard of that before but I might like to reinforce mine with it just to be extra safe. Let us know if you end up changing anything up - I'd love to see it!

Merenneito Nerissa
12-10-2014, 05:52 AM
Yea I will! :) And good to know that you had help from that video, cause I really recommend to strengthen up the flukes part where the string goes cause I understood you like to keep them separate, as you seen from the video that happens for all the tails, or flukes at some point, the ripping thing I mean :)

Emmadives
12-22-2014, 01:12 AM
I reinforced my fluke with sugru tonight! I could tell that mine was very slightly starting to pull/split just a bit in the middle so I hope this will stop it and keep it strong. I'm waiting for it to dry right now but will keep you posted on how the sugru works with the silicone.

Merenneito Nerissa

Just a teeny tiny bit, like a couple of millimeters. I could only see it when I looked very carefully after seeing the video! It really wasn't noticeable at all, but I was worried it could keep going so I reinforced it.

Thank you very much, I'm so happy you like it since I uploaded this video only today and you are the first ones to see it :-)Melaina: Yes, it would be my dream to become a tailmaker, especially for Europeans to avoid horrible customs and shipping fees. But the hard truth is that I just don't have enough time. I work for a very challenging main job and weekends and holidays I use for mermaid performing shows and stuff. I would only be able to construct one tail in a year and my poor customers would get crazy. But I learned how much work a tail is, and I got a new appreciation and respect for professional tailmakers...Theobromine: Thank you too! It is my first tail, but before starting it I used to create small silicone things to get used to the material. I have some experience in sculpting but never worked with silicone before. I made a lot of mistakes first, but it's the best way to learn :-)

It's a gorgeous tail for sure.

I had no idea you were on the Magictail gathering 2014 (was it the one with the miss contest?), I would have come too if I had known :(

It would be fantastic if you could make more tails, even if it were just one tail every few years!
There's no silicone tailmaker in Germany so far and only a handful in all of Europe.

SeaNymph

No, I was guest at the "normal" magictail gathering in march 2014, not at the one with the miss contest which was in september if I remember correctly. They didn't want pro mermaids there who would distract them from measuring model curves ;-)
I will see how this whole tailmaking turns out. Have started a second one in july 2014, hope it to be finished in february. I'm excited :-)

SeaNymph
12-31-2014, 11:23 AM
Echidna, the new tail was supposed to be pink/gold, like the ones of PotC. But then, it is always the same with me: art goes it´s own way, I do the design while I´m working. So it´s a bit "smoked salmon" colored now, more fishy and not as ethereal as in PotC. I made the fluke smaller and the silicone thinner, to make the travelling with it easier. I would have loved to join the tailmaker contest at NC Merfest, but it´s more likely that I would change everything during work and people wouldn´t recognize my original design anymore....

Michelle, thanks a lot. I love my new latin name! I couldn´t resist: Here´s a photo for you to see were I got my dragon skin from for my green tail ;-) But no worries: I didn´t kill the dragon, just changed it´s epiphany to the Draco chlorinus....

Thank you very much for the picture! :swoon: It is very artfully done and I have saved it! I especially see the fluke in the (dragon's) tail fins.

Draco chlorinus nauseous respiratorus goes all the way back to the beginning of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. Several years ago I spoke on the subject with creator E. Gary Gygax shortly before he passed away, for every dragon in the original Monster Manual had its own "scientific" name. He said that it "was done with a lot of huffing and puffing." Your guess is as good as mine as to what that meant, but I think it is incredibly cool to have a real-life mermaid bear that moniker, and especially appropriate for one who operates in a chlorinated pool! :cthulhu: :mermaid kiss:

starter tail, I will now have to make a new fabric cover because I got the finis rapid monofin (the finfun was not stiff enough to give good propulsion...the rapid is awesome, I can make it across a 25 yard pool in one breath and 8-9 'strokes!); now I have to figure out if I want to do a fabric cover or if I feel brave to either try to make a neoprene cover (REALLY curious how to go about handling the bulkiness of the straps around the Rapid monofin ankles!!!) or a fabric one. Or buy one somehow....got to do more research!! I have till June (texas pod meetup) if I want to wear my fast monofin..... (feel free to link helpful threads here if you had any that popped into mind as most helpful for the bulky Rapid strap issue!)

My starter tail's just shiny spandex. I quickly figured out that an open-bottom fabric fin is best LOL. My daughter's tail is from finfunmermaid.com.

You can make an closed fluke but still have a hole in it to shove in your monofin.
I'm using a Finis Foil for this tail, so the fin hole (HAWHAHAWHA!!!) is pretty small.

I call it the Open Close Fluke, as it has properties of an open fluke and a closed fluke.

Like here. You sew in fin lines, leave a hole in the middle depending on how big your monofin is. Best way to find out is to roll the monofin in two and lay it in the middle of the fluke, and mark the sides. Then you can see how many fin lines to sew close before you need leave them open in the middle.
The lines is a washable crayon I used to mark where to sew.

26407

I sew all my flukes this way. This is a better option for me than an open fluke or sewing in snaps, velcro etc. The bottom doesn't flap open when swimming and still allows water and air bubbles to flow through. And more fun to wave it at little kids as the loose fabric is like the flesh of the tail and the fabric remains flowy.

And here is a close up of this tail before I modified it for the Finis Foil...

I love the tropical flower pattern, Jaffa!

Thank you. Its my first tail that I'd made, the Aloha Tail. Thought I'd give it some love now that I have my Finis Foil, it fits just right in the old fluke. Old fluke was Wave
shape.

Also, I don't sew lines across anymore as it stopped the water and air from leaving the tail. But it was my first homemade tail ever, so I didn't know any better to stop the monofin from moving around inside the fluke.

Before I sew the fin lines, I make a light tracing of the edge of the monofin, so that when fin lines get sewn in a little bit more on each line, the ends of the lines make a curve, like the edge of the monofin.

Here's an absolute horrible video and only photographic evidence of my old mermaid tail. I made it when I was around 14, and when I still had long hair.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0Gdjb8364E
It was a ghetto-ified tail thanks to low money reserves. A homemade monofin made with 2 scuba fins that were 3 sizes too big for me, duct tape and some on-sale fabric from joanne's.

Nothing "went wrong" on MerNations end. It left their hands in perfect condition. The mail people took it out of the box and bags and tore it up slightly. Luckily they made it thicker and used a harder silicone so it didn't tear as bad as it could have been. Definitely won't rip off! I have the silicone to repair it. If the mail people hadn't have messed with it then it would have been fine. I have no idea what exactly they did to tear it because I tried cutting my scale bracers open and they put up a huge fight so unless they took a knife to it I don't see how it ripped and no one will confess what happened. (Scale bracers didn't fit so I tried to see if I could make them bigger but couldn't) the bracers were a surprise gift. I'm just glad my fins weren't thin and fragile or they would have come off.

OMG I'm so glad That didn't happen to me. I would have been devastated! I'm sure if it did MerNation would have taken it back and repaired it. It just wasn't worth sending it back and paying $180 in shipping to and from just to have a few small tears in the dorsal repaired. I haven't gotten around to it yet since I'm prepping materials for my student teaching at the moment because I start Tuesday! (I'm painting my teacher prize box at the moment :D very time consuming!) I want to be prepared for that since I could get a job offer out of it as well and I have plenty of time to fix the dorsal since the water won't be warm until may or june. Thank you so much! I wish the person responsible would own up to this. I would feel guilty if I broke something that belongs to someone else. If I did that I would have enclosed money from my pocket for the damages and a note apologizing. That's just me
